How Senator Ron Johnson Helps Erode Confidence in Government - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

So, the article covers a number of Vladi's little buddy Ron Johnson (R-WI) and his many various and sundry lies, but one of the funnier parts is the blatant lie he told about Greenland:

So, let's clear this malarkey up right here and now.

Kalaallit Nunaat (which is the greenlandic name for the country) / Grønland (which is the Danish name for the country and is pronounced with "K" and not "G") has been as cold and hell and covered with massive glaciers for a long, long, LONG time. More than 3/4 of the world's largest island is permanently covered by an ice-sheet - no green to see there!

And it is true: Erik the Red, who was expelled from Iceland for manslaughter, landed in Greenland and named it such in order to consider people to move there.

I sometimes wonder why people like Ron Johson are so unbelievably stupid, but here we are....

Discuss. Is such lying cool. And be careful, whataboutism won't play here.

Government's actions alone have delivered little faith or confidence in government. It didn't need Ron Johnson.

On the other hand, the long lines of those waiting to be injected with an experimental concoction shows that large portions of the citizenry are oblivious, gullible, and frightened enough to place all their faith in government and industry. Yes Virginia, we have the government we deserve.

I was taught that it got its name because mariners wanted people to go there instead of Iceland which was much more inhabitable. It was misnamed in order to misinform the public. That may not be true either but Johnson may be repeating what someone told him as well.

What is fact is that, soon after its discovery, there were colonies there and the termperatures were warmer than they are today. Those colonies were abandoned as the climate cooled. I don't know whether it was green or not. Somebody who is more interested might look that up.

What you just wrote about Erik the Red is entirely correct! He named it Greenland in order to get people to think that the Island was lush and green and therefore move there, not because it really was green. There are only a few short weeks in the year where small parts of the island are green, but that is fleeting and far betwixt heaven and earth.

the point is: why should a Senator just be repeating stuff that someone may have told him instead of actually researching the facts, you know, like adults are supposed to do!

I don't buy that. Not "everybody" else does it.

Actually, I don't. I don't go around deliberately telling lies. I do, now and then, like all human beings, make a mistake, but as I have written in this forum more than once, when I mess up, I fess up. That is, however, world's apart from a sitting Senator deliberately lying in order to persue his agenda. They are not one and the same thing.

I didn't suggest that you do. I said you repeat what others tell you. So do I. So does everyone.

Really, how does Greenland affect his agenda?

Read for yourself the context of what he said and you can figure it out for yourself.

No whataboutism here, but in a mere one years time one could compile a list of harebrained statements and outright lies uttered by members of BOTH parties that would dwarf the Encyclopedia Britannica. Mensa membership and fastidious honesty have never been requirements for holding political office.....besides, what would we have to do around here if they were?

True. I am starting to like you more and more. However, whataboutism is not the topic of this thread.

That being said, and I mean this quite sincerely and not trumpily at all, we could start a thread about hair-brained statements, but remember, sometimes they are hair-brained and sometimes they are deliberate and well-places lies, just plain old lies. Lies, lies lies and the lying liars who tell them. :)

I wonder why the felt the need to mention this part..

” and said excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere “helps the trees grow.

Do they take issue with that statement?

The Virgin Islands are named so, because they haven’t been laid yet.

"been as cold and hell and covered with massive glaciers for a long, long, LONG time."

Pretty much describing Ron Johnson to a T....

Other than that, I don't like to make fun of the mentally disabled.

Even if Wisconsin stumbles in 2022 and elects another member of the Seditionist Party, he (won't be a SHE if it's from the GOP) cannot be as dumb as this guy... only way to go is up here...

If the NY Times were really worried about "eroding confidence in government" it would not have reporting on the fake Trump Russia Collusion for years. It was a total propaganda scam for stupid people to believe, but they ran it non-stop. They used quotes from liars like Adam Schiff that claimed they had hard evidence.

That is some crazy whataboutism. Did you have any info that is relevant to the thread topic or should we discuss Watergate next?

Yeah... the NY Time is a partisan crap rag written for "Useful Idiots". It ignored the huge lies told by Democrats for years on DOJ corruption, yet the birdcage liner and thinks "Greenland OMG!" is a real story?

I don't know if it is a "real" story but it is a real topic of this thread unlike Russia.

The topic of the thread is that the NY Times is reporting a story with their claim that it "erodes confidence in the government". What a joke. They reported provable lies without sourcing them and then sourcing them to liars like Adam Schiff about Trump Russia Collusion for years. They absolutely ignored the DOJ corruption. Yet now... they want to whine? Seriously? They have no credibility.
