And how do we know that our government is doing so in actual good faith rather than attempting to silence information that they may not particularly want the general public to know about? If some foreign government decides to publish a story that says something like "US Government secretly spying on all it's citizens in real time using their cell phone speakers without court order" would you believe that the government is blocking that media as genuine "disinformation" as in factually not true or something that they don't want you to know they are doing?

Congress hasn't had an approval rating over 50% in damn near 20 years. Congress (the folks we elect who actually run most of the "government") routinely have approval ratings in the teens and 20's and on a good year the 30s. Very few people trust Congress in general it'll be very difficult to convince any significant fraction of Americans that Congress is in "good faith" combatting "disinformation". It's virtually impossible to be honest and be a politician.

    Well Stated!

THE DISINFORMATION OFFICE’S FAILURE: Ha ha ha. “Let right-wing attacks derail” — that’s rich. The idea was so bad, they couldn’t defend it. Let derail. Ha. Like it was a train, locomoting powerfully down the track…. No, it wasn’t. It never had any traction. It went kablooey only because everyone didn’t lay down and let it go by entirely unimpeded.

“I think they didn’t fight because they saw they’d only be digging a bigger hole for themselves. It is ironic, but that makes it funny. And it’s a great thing to be in a position to laugh at what happened.”

“My God. It’s impossible to measure just how far WaPo has fallen. But let Taylor Lorenz try to measure it out for us- column by column. A big assist to the Idiots in the White House. Never have so many spent so much time putting their heads together and still coming up short of one full brain. The entire act is beyond embarrassing. They’re dangerous to the nation. “"

Indeed. Free Folks voting for Democrats is like chickens voting for Colonel Sanders.

"Maybe this is the moment when the rise of censorship began to slow and our nation began to heal!"

" Who thought it was a good idea to use the government to help "government, the media and educational bodies" "understand" how political rhetoric works? Taylor Lorenz is openly stating that the Disinformation Governance Board was supposed to go after the right wing!"

Yes we understood that, especially the facebook posts of parents who stand up to school boards.

"Maybe, just Maybe, having a mentally ill person be the Minister of Truth was NOT a good plan.
I mean, diversity is one thing but Bat **** Crazy is another."

"Whitmer-Jankowicz 2024. All your creepy on one ballot. No ID required. FBI will not arrest the 4AM paid ballot harvesting mules. win win!"

    Oh FFS man

There is literally no right to yell fire in a crowded theatre.

This is NOT a "free speech" issue. you do not have the right to incite action. That is NOT a "right" and you know it

And THAT did not apply to print, or internet, or cable. It ONLY applied to BROADCAST over "the public airwaves" and it limited ALL speech with it's dinosaur requirements of broadcast stations. It was also at a time when there was little avenue for such public discussion and Congress has a misplaced fear all such discussion would be monopolize for the few radio stations and even rarer TV stations that existed at the time using those "public airwaves". Again why do you oppose more speech and want less speech? Lies are best countered with truth and let the PEOPLE decide not some biased idiot in some official government position of a minister of truth.

That's not an argument that the Left isn't pro-censorship, that's an argument in support of censorship. Thank you for making my point.

Further, the ‘Fire in a Crowded Theater’ quote wasn't a real event it, it was nothing more than an analogy made in a Court case that was OVERTURNED 50 years ago.

The 103 year old phrase that you are misquoting and misusing is: "The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic."

ProRegressives chirp it like a parrot to support the anti-constitutional liberal democracy claim that we should err on the side of censorship! Not here, not now, not ever. Not while we remain a Free People.

Those are that not wholly ignorant realize that the phrase was never binding law, and the underlying case, U.S. v. Schenck, is one of the most odious free speech decisions in the Court's history, and it was OVERTURNED a half century ago!

U.S. v. Schenck had nothing to do with fires or theaters or false statements. The Court was justifyin the unjust conviction of Charles Schenck, the Secretary of the Socialist Party of America, under the Espionage Act for writing and distributing a pamphlet where he declared his opposition to the draft during World War I. He did not call for violence. He did not even call for civil disobedience. He didn't have any downtowns burned, no windows broken, no stores looted, no innocents hauled from cars and beaten. It did encourage Free People: "Do not submit to intimidation," and in the form of peaceful measures to petition for the repeal of the act, summarized as: "Assert Your Rights."

Your phrase is not only misquoted and misapplied it was nothing more than dicta. The Court after quoting this analogy unjustly imprisoned Schenck. That same year two other horrible decisions Debs v. U.S. and Frohwerk v. U.S.--"also sent peaceful anti-war activists to jail under the Espionage Act for the mildest of government criticism." This unholy trinity of "rulings did more damage to First Amendment" than any others "in the 20th century."

Finally by 1969 we had a Court with some actual brains in their collective heads. "The Supreme Court's decision in Brandenburg v. Ohio effectively overturned Schenck and any authority the case still carried. There, the Court held that inflammatory speech--and even speech advocating violence by members of the Ku Klux Klan--is protected under the First Amendment, unless the speech "is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action".

    https://www.theatlantic.com/nationa...g-the-fire-in-a-crowded-theater-quote/264449/

This nation has always been a mixture of truly Free People and other numbskulls that supported the monarchy and now support various forms of Authoritarianism. As these clowns couldn't mount a logical argument strong enough to fight out of a paper sack, they instead try to rig the rules so that counter arguments to their mush headed nonsense cannot be voiced or heard.

Mary Poppins of Misinformation and the muddle headed Biden WH again confirmed their idiocy and ignorance with this latest attempt at government censorship. We are a Free People. We speak and publish our thoughts freely and cherish our god given rights to declare our government to be a villainous assortment of seditionists.

Wow, a complete mis-characterization of the board's mission and authority in the first sentence of the post. Actually, that's not at all surprising.

The board, though, is an internal working group and doesn’t have operational authority, instead serving in a more advisory role. It’s intended to gather best practices and support counter-disinformation activities, not monitor Americans, Mayorkas said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

“It works to ensure that the way in which we address threats, the connectivity between threats and acts of violence that are addressed without infringing on free speech, protecting civil rights and civil liberties, the right of privacy,” Mayorkas said, conceding that the department could’ve done a better job of explaining the group’s role.

“This working group, internal working group, will draw from best practices and communicate those best practices to the operators because the board does not have operational authority,” Mayorkas added. In a fact sheet released Monday afternoon, DHS said Mayorkas has asked department officials to enhance the public’s trust in the group.

Mayorkas has also asked the bipartisan Homeland Security Advisory Council to recommend ways DHS can address disinformation while “protecting free speech and other fundamental rights,” according to the fact sheet.

The idea of not being able to lie with impunity is clearly upsetting to many conservatives.

Do you really believe the disinformation board could keep such a story from being widely circulated? Crazy as it may be.

The idea that it would be the government, an unelected unaccountable government official, that decides what is a lie and who is telling it and what should be done about it should be upsetting to all of us. And spare me the no "operational authority" there's a big "FOR NOW" to be attached to that.

What disinformation are you talking about? "Get vaxxed to stop the spread"? "Wearing a mask will stop the spread"? "Russia collusion"? "Hands up, don't shoot"? All we need to do for that is get rid of the Leftist media.

No but the actual point of something like a "disinformation" board isn't to just delete information the "official authority" doesn't want to get out but also to discredit any stories that don't fit with the official narrative.

This happens now and happened often in the past even without a certified government "disinformation board". The way it's done now by the media is to downplay it, call it a conspiracy theory, attack the credibility of the publishers and/or those who believe it to be true, etc. If the government and/or mainstream media doesn't want you to believe something for whatever reason then they have a myriad of tools at their disposal that they don't hesitate to use. If they can't outright remove it from circulation then they simply go on the offensive to discredit it and anyone who may believe it true.

If a foreign nation posted a story like I mentioned then the very first thing the mainstream media would do is analyze it to see whether or not it hurts or helps their overall narrative. If it hurts the narrative or their end goal then they will simply suppress it to the best of their ability. Take the Hunter Biden laptop story during the Presidential Campaign of 2020 for example. We all know the story and are familiar with the article that Time magazine published afterward. If it gets too big to where they can't hide it without it looking blatantly obvious then they engage the machine to discredit it and anybody who believes it.

    2022 story:
"US Government secretly spying on it's citizens using their cell phones without court order"
Facebook/Twitter/Social Media: "This violates our terms of service" "Fact checked: False:" "Banned"
Mainstream Media/Hollywood/Pop Culture: "Far Right extremists further radicalized by unfounded cell phone spying conspiracy theory, studies show. How to keep your family safe"

    2017 story:
"US Government secretly spying on it's citizens using their cell phones without court order"
Facebook/Twitter/Social Media: "Stickied top post" "Violates no terms of service"
Mainstream Media/Hollywood/Pop Culture: "Current Administration caught red handed violating the Constitutional Rights of millions of Americans in massive undercover operation. How far will our Democracy fall?"

We all know this is what they do. At this point nobody can even argue otherwise in a pure 100% objectionable fashion because it's become way too blatant to even pretend that it isn't what they do.

The raw facts don't matter, it's about selective publishing and/or publishing a factual story a certain way in order to present it in a particular light. With that being the case there is no way to trust ANYBODY to moderate information and trust they are doing so in pure objectionable good faith. It doesn't matter who or what particular political party is in power they ALL have reasons to suppress information and lie to you. Trying to give ANY of these people the authoritative power to be the arbiters of truth is asinine.

    No. Anything else?

The Department of Homeland Security announced on Wednesday that it was suspending the work of an internal advisory board intended to combat disinformation after what the department described as a deliberate disinformation campaign.

The creation of the panel, called the Disinformation Governance Board, set off a firestorm of criticism when it was announced last month. While the criticism came from across the political spectrum, including civil liberty groups, the fiercest denunciations came from the right. Republican leaders and commentators talked about it as an Orwellian Ministry of Truth that would police people’s speech.

That was never the board’s mandate, a department spokesman said in a written statement. Instead, it was meant to coordinate the department’s various agencies in the fight against malicious disinformation by foreign adversaries, drug or human traffickers or other international crime groups.

Was any evidence of Trump being a Russian agent found? No it wasn't. That means he was in exonerated.

You simply accepted the spin and propaganda hook line and sinker. "Disinformation" is a euphemistic cover and camouflage for any words and writings by conservatives, Trump followers, most Republicans, or anyone who challenges the Democrat agenda, and is straight out of Marx and Alinsky. It is as obvious as a train wreck and (was) a start of official government support for the quasi government censorship and bans of those groups that has been active for 5 or so years by Big Tech, the MSM, most TV, many publishers, and much Entertainment with quiet tacit approval of most Democrat leaders.

More likely they have just removed it from the public view. It will just have to fit in the DHS budget.
