In my opinion this is another level of near death experience account due to the qualifications that Dr. Eben Alexander has which allows him to explain his out of the body experience using words that you and I would not tend to know.

I am impressed how the message from his ten year old son began the process of his consciousness returning to his body.

Let’s first clarify the credentials of this well-respected man before we share his account. Dr. Alexander has been a Harvard Medical School academic who taught brain science; he’s also an established scientist and neurosurgeon.

So it’s not every day you hear someone from such an esteemed medical background discussing paranormal experiences of their own, but Dr. Alexander has an account you don’t want to miss.

It all started on Nov. 10, 2008, when he woke up at 4:30 a.m. with a splitting headache. Very soon, the pain became unbearable. He was rushed to the hospital he works at, where doctors determined he was afflicted with meningoencephalitis, a brain infection, and was given a 2 percent chance of survival.

And he heard his son’s cries.

Having an extensive background in neuroscience, he posed a very logical question, one that the scientific community is currently unable to provide a sufficient answer to.

Given that his brain was not capable of complex thought processes in that comatose state, he asks—“How were our minds conscious when our bodies were effectively dead and, in my case at least, the brain had ceased to function? And where are these bright, unfading memories stored?”

Whilst there are always going to be those who believe and those who disbelieve, Dr. Alexander suggests that people keep an open mind and “suspend disbelief” for the moment.

In the case of then three year and ten month old Colton Burpo it was the rather angry prayers of his dad that began the process of his returning to his body. Both Colton as well as Dr. Alexander report being able to hear what their loved ones are saying while they were in a coma.

SUICIDE EPIDEMIC RELATES TO SPIRITUAL VACUUM

Earlier this summer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article about the alarming 28% rise in suicide deaths in the United States between 1999 and 2016. The issue was recently punctuated with the celebrity suicides of Kate Spade (June 5) and Anthony Bourdain (June , leaving many to wonder how such visibly successful and seemingly fulfilled people can take their own lives. Such assumptions fail to acknowledge that suicide is often a more fundamental existential disorder of disconnection and purposelessness.

From my perspective, suicide deaths are largely the result of the spiritual vacuum in our secular culture. Spirituality, in this discussion, is an acknowledgment of meaning and purpose in our lives, as well as a sense of deep interconnection with others and with the universe at large. Some gain spiritual growth through religion, although conflicting orthodoxies tend to diminish our knowing of the reality of such a guiding force at the core of our lives, at least for some. Unfortunately, the predominant scientific materialism of our era supports a notion of separation and meaninglessness that only contributes to the spiraling desperation reflected in this sad explosion of suicidal behavior.

Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every state, especially those in the Midwest and New England, according to the latest Vital Signs report by the CDC: “In 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are on the rise.”

An editorial in the British Medical Journal reported that the recent decline in overall life expectancy in the US is mainly attributable to the rise in suicide and substance abuse.

Well of course bur religion is supposed to do the same thing. And rational thinking would say that ending existence should eliminate fear just as well. Be rational, if you die and it all ends what could there possibly be to fear. The only fear about death is the sick crap religion spews about hell and suffering in the afterlife. The real fear and evil is that spread by religion and in particular Christianity.

h. Who goes to heaven?

In the end ... believe it or not (sigh of relief), everyone gets to come home! Heaven is a place of ultimate LOVE. Sorry but NDE's do not provide any actual evidence that either a soul exists or that a soul has always existed. You confuse stories with proof. And stories about NDEs have as much evidence to support them as evidence of alien abductions.

And his claim that birthmarks prove reincarnation has to be a joke.

In general I agree with you on this subject, but Ian Stevenson's research is not a joke. It is scientific research conducted by a MD, and Psychiatrist who was (now deceased) a professor at the University of Va. Firstly Stevenson never claimed to prove reincarnation and secondly without reading any of his books or understanding his methodology criticism is unfounded. His research is scientific and all books are a difficult (dry and scientific) read. When he has photographs of birthmarks that correspond to being shot or hung, and the person with the birthmark is aware of intimate details of someone they never met and know nothing about and could know nothing about, what is the explanation?

For a light read on the subject the following was written by a reporter who set out to debunk Stevenson but came to a different conclusion.
