First off, let's not pretend that things are going swimmingly for the Trump administration and Republicans. The RealClearPolitics average of national polling shows the president's approval rating slumping below 40 percent, including weak number from typically-Trump-friendly Rasmussen. The cartoonish dysfunction in the White House, compounded by the perception that Trump's agenda has stalled, certainly aren't helping matters either. Warning sirens are sounding all over the place for the GOP; there's no getting around that. Then again, voters often think even less of the Democrats -- viewing them as leaderless, agenda-less, and too wedded to government "solutions." In their preliminary efforts to win back Congress next year, Democrats have introduced a terrible new slogan, and have commissioned polling to help determine how to splinter off more votes from a demographic that pushed Trump to victory: Working class whites. Their own survey paints a bleak picture on that front. Here's a big one:

Even after six months of shambolic Republican governance, Democrats are still viewed as an unacceptable alternative to many persuadable voters in middle America. Those were the sobering findings of a Democratic survey commissioned by the party-backed House Majority PAC, which Politico and McClatchy first reported. The poll surveyed working-class white voters in pivotal districts that Democrats are targeting in the midterms. Despite the Trump turmoil in Washington, Republicans held a 10-point lead on the generic ballot (43-33 percent) among these blue-collar voters. Democrats hold a whopping 61 percent disapproval rating among these voters, with only 32 percent approving. Even Trump’s job-approval rating is a respectable 52 percent with the demographic in these swing districts.

Interestingly, Republicans' Congressional ballot advantage over Democrats (though they trail nationally) is stronger (+13) among 18-59 year-olds within this racial-socioeconomic demographic than it is with those who are 60-plus (+8). The same goes for Trump's job approval. Within the younger cohort, he's riding high at (56/40), while barely above water with older working class whites (49/47). Again, these are findings from a Democratic poll. Two-thirds of this electorate approves of Republicans in Congress, and their top stated objections to Democrats are (a) not working with the GOP, and (b) obstructing Trump. The "resistance" is turning them off. Kraushaar explains another source of Democrats' struggles, stretching beyond just white voters without a college education:

His either/or point is important. Democrats are more likely to ride anti-Trump sentiment to victories in the 'burbs, even if many of those voters are suspicious of their propensity to raise taxes and run up federal spending. But if they're still sucking wind in rural and white working class districts, Republicans have a chance to save their House majority even if suburban voters swing pretty heavily toward Team Blue. It's about economics and culture. The full poll is HERE. I'll leave you with this reminder of a core component of the GOP's swing district strategy:.....snip~

More heartbreak for the Demos. They just aren't able to get rid of the TDS. Looks like Trump will still get support from the Blue Dog Demos. What say ye?

They deserve it too, you don't run on identity politics and expect to get anywhere.

The Demos keep forgetting that as low as Trumps numbers are. The Demos are considered to be worse.

No sense in making LAME predictions based on polls that are 15 1/2 months out from the 2018 mid-terms.

    Anything is possible.

There are still a lot of uneducated, low-information, voters on the rolls.

It is way too early to jump to any conclusions.

Well as low as the leftness thinks. It still don't change up the Demos reality. Which is all the Demos that voted for Trump are still sticking with him.

Why should the dems worry since white working-class voters are way too busy working two jobs to show up at the polls in large numbers.

Maybe, because some of those are the Obama trump voters and without them you won't win anything, but hey it's a "moral" victory right lol.

I don't care if the democrat won another election. In fact, I would just as soon they didn't. That, however, is also my thought about the GOP as well.

My thought is that people inclined to think government should provide more, are less motivated than people who think the opposite, to go to the polls and vote.

That's funny, you folks were all about polls and how awesome the were last year, now they are lame predictions, much like tea leaves and goat entrails. Some of us warned you folks, but you laughed us off and told us to prep for Madame President. The thing is, its not the polls that are the predictor, its the lack of change in the Democrat party platform that will ensure the polls are right. Trump didn't beat Hillary in Nov because of media polls, he did it because his platform was in line with enough people to win the electoral college. This election was about issues, and Democrats remain on the wrong side of too many issues still...

THE ABSOLUTE LOWEST APPROVAL RATING IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY. Nationwide, 40% of registered Democrats now hate the Democratic Party and say it no longer represents them.

The problem, of course, is that the Democratic Party has not called those who oppose male pedophiles having the right to hang out in women's restrooms with handcuffs, duct tape, a video camera and knife bigots enough times and hasn't called white people racists, called gun owners Nazis and called Christians ignorant bigots enough millions of times. The Democratic Party just needs to attack over 80% of voters more intensely. The best way to win votes is by insulting as many voters as much as possible.

The democratic party is dying a slow death and it can't come soon enough. Why did they have to resort to identity politics? Why do they always have to say your racist if you have a different opinion. Also, they don't think whites are the majority in this country when they still are. It doesn't do them no good to offend those voters.

I completely agree with you that all white, black and Latino Christians are not compatible with the Democratic Party and should therefore vote straight Republican in every election for every office. At least we agree on something.

All the dems need to do is stop the race baiting and cop hating. Also, they need to change their policies on immigration altogether, strong border security and if they are here illegally, deport them period.

While the Dem's love big Gov't and wealth redistribution, the GOP loves it even more !

The GOP is on the ropes ... no doubt about it , the party is fractured and in chaos. The Dem's however seem to be sitting on their laurels. They need a message and I am not hearing one.
