Jesus preaches a classic left-wing ideology. Love thy neighbor. Be generous. Be kind. Feed the poor. Heal the sick. Be kind to the stranger and the foreigner. These views are all contrary to American Conservatism, which focuses on building walls, rejecting refugees, personal responsibility and expecting people to care for and fend for themselves.
False characterization of both Christianity and conservatism. I certainly love my neighbor, I give at least 10% of my paycheck, and I'm probably the kindest person you'll meet. I've worked in homeless shelters or give my tithe to a charity, while I'm not a doctor, I am trained in first aid, and again, I'm kind to every to everybody I meet and I myself was born in a foreign nation. However, Jesus wants us to be kind out of our own hearts, not forced by a government entity. We believe in the same values as you do (for the most part). We just have different solutions on how to achieve that. Also, while Jesus wants us to be kind, he also wants to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Caesar created laws, borders, and how to become a citizen. We don't care if you come here legally. In fact I would welcome newcomers. The problem is illegal aliens coming over. Another thing is that Jesus also taught personal responsibility and when you're able, you should care and fend for yourself.
Conservatives can be Christians providing they don't go overboard into theological fascism.. Social democracy makes sense and one can be conservative and believe in that.. Remember when Trump lamented that Norwegians weren't immigrating to the US? LOLOL
Charity managed by the government is not a bad thing... We are not a small nation of small villages any longer. Why do you think Scandinavians don't immigrate to the US?
First off, it's a misnomer to claim that Sweden is socialist. Secondly, charity at the point of a gun is, (1) not charity, and (2), not efficient.
I reject this. A conservative is meant to hold traditional values. Our traditional values are founded in liberalism. The modern Republican is not a conservative, they are a radical.
Heck, you can call yourself a conservative and still support trump’s deficits... so, really i suppose there is only one unifying tennet of conservatism... guess what that is?
First off, that still takes people with guns to enforce it (hence you're giving money at gun point), secondly, if that's true then why do people spend federal time for tax evasion?
not paying your taxes is different than tax evasion. tax evasion is knowingly LYING on your tax forms.
I'd say yes. Jesus never said the government should do these things. He was pretty quiet on what the government should do, and plenty of political conservatives see the need for private charity.
You can give your money to whoever you want. I'm just saying that your reasoning is misguided as is most people's. You probably do it because it was mentioned in the bible, but biblical tithing has to do with food and livestock, not money.
I do it for both Biblical purposes and because I want to. In fact, the Bible specifically states that God doesn't want a begrudged giver. As for livestock and food, ypu do realize that back then, that was their currency, right?
When has the definition of tithing became the argument of the thread? I tithe how I see fit. And how I see fit is giving at least 10% of my earnings willingly as how I interpret scripture. The topic of the thread is whether Christianity is different from conservatism. One of the arguments supporting the claim that Chrustianity is opposite of conservatism is the fact that apparently conservatives don't give.
If this jesus character was an actual god instead of just another long-dead dude, I'm pretty sure he'd punch every single conservative in their face at the appropriate time...
