But this is in Canada. And few Canadians are aware of what's going on, because this great forest is in a remote area. Seems like nobody really cares, and nothing will be done. I'm all for managed forest practices, but this sounds like it may be excessive. Canada's government is all talk about good things and "protection", but when push comes to shove, logging is simply too important to the country's economy, and there are not enough adequate safeguards in place for this great forest. They should harvest timber from other lower quality forests, but those forests are less desirable because the trees are smaller and much shorter in diameter. Many more trees have to be chopped down to get the same amount of wood. Also the cedar species is more valuable than pine.
I fought for decades against the same thing in Washington state. They stopped logging in national forests and thousands of good paying jobs were lost and then the state sold off all their timber rights to weyrhauser and now they ship all the logs to China for milling. Lose lose.
It seems like the current fad in the environmental movement is Global Warming™, so there's not much talk or consciousness about deforestation. You can bring up clearcutting to an average Progressive and get a blank stare, like they don't really care. Who cares about the forest when the world is imminently going to end due to Climate Change™?

An old-growth forest that has been cut can take 300-400 years to fully recover and for the trees to regrow to the size they were before. I've seen for myself, firsthand, forests that have been logged out more than 100 years ago, and it is obvious they do not look the same as virgin forests in the same area. The trees are shorter, a much thinner diameter, and much more closely spaced together, not as much open space between the trees. And huge stumps from over a 100 years ago can still be seen, giving some indication what the trees used to be like.
bringiton, these old growth forests are really impressive, and it is quite an experience to be in one. Maybe you have never had the experience of walking through a temperate rainforest, they are much more impressive and majestic than an ordinary forest many people may be used to. If you actually walked through one, and then walked through one that had been logged out 50 to 100 years ago, the difference would be very apparent to you. You'd think the virgin forest was definitely much better and more amazing to walk through, though you might not be able to put your finger on exactly why until someone specifically pointed things out. These are special forests, different from the regular forest that can pretty much be found all over Canada.
Just walk into Menards and try to buy some cedar beams. I'm kind of amazed anyone can afford cedar. 4 x 12 x 16' cedar timber $240 plus tax.
Yes, it's an impressive experience. But it's an experience that is just as impressive in 10km^2 of old growth forest as in 10Mkm^2.
