A photo of the promposal that's being shared on social media shows two teens holding a sign that reads, "If I was Black, I'd be picking cotton, but I'm white, so I'm picking you. Prom?"

"The derogatory, racist remarks in the post do not reflect Central 301's values or our standards of appropriate and acceptable student conduct," said Superintendent Todd E. Stirn in a statement. "Actions that go against our values of inclusion and respect have no place in our schools or our school-sponsored activities."

I know some forum members like them some race stories...

I put it to you, Greg..... Is that racist??

I certainly think it is, has no place in our society in 2022, and those 2 children should not be allowed to attend prom. I probably would not expel them from school for this (the superintendent seems to indicate otherwise), but I would hope their actions could be made known to any future community or technical college(s) for determination if that's the type of applicant they want.

    Actions should have consequences...

Yep, its racist. And they shouldn't have done it. But they have a Right to say it. If the superintendent does punish them for it then the school should be sued. Particularly since it wasn't even on school grounds that this happened.

You cannot be serious? If they are denied prom entry, for doing something you say they shouldn't have done and is probably a lock to have violated whatever school code of conduct they have there, they should sue the school??

It's that sort of thinking that has caused the deterioration of our civil society...... The right (the entire country) used to be about accountability, not suing for every repercussion...

Forget the Great Society..... You've perfected the Snowflake Society....

    hmmm

a couple of teenagers post a picture of a stupid sign

They did it on their own time and not on school grounds

The school has no business getting involved

Next, is this the best that the media can do is report on a couple of stupid teens? They did not carjack, kill or injure anyone yet they get a news article

And, we get a thread on this as if folks think the sign was a good idea

    good lord

Stupid, wrong, racist and the children should be held accountable by their parents.

No, the school should not ban them from prom. The statement wasn't made on school property, and the school cannot demand that students hold their tongues on statements, no matter how racist.

Technically, if the school does try to ban them from prom for this, the students do have a basis for a lawsuit, they are the harmed party. While their statement was, I repeat, stupid, wrong and racist, it was not directed at any individual in specific. There is no 'harmed party' receiving the statement.

Like it or not, they have a 1st Amendment Right to say that. If it had been on school grounds then I could see a need for punishment and I'd agree to such. But it wasn't. It was outside of school grounds. Their code of conduct does not reach past school grounds.

Also, I never said that they should not be punished at all. I said that the school should not be punishing them. Their parents most definitely should punish them. Not you. Not I. Not the school which is government run. The parents. Also whatever social media they posted this on should at least suspend their account. But the school should most definitely keep their noses out of it.

but it is a school event and he could be denied access to that event and should be

I would say the same if a black person showed racism against white students

this is 2022, no place for this nonsense

Doesn't matter. It was said outside of the school grounds. If they had said it AT prom then you'd have a point.

Since when does the school have any involvement how one student asks another to prom? Is their a handbook that says it must be done this way or that way, or you will be refused admittance?

You are looking at the school to address this, when it has no right to address what is under parental purview.

While pretty much everybody here agrees it was wrong, you cannot give a school the authority to regulate what a student says on on their own time, not at a school function, or on school property.

It's about a school event, so the school got something to say about who is welcome to their own event according to their code of conduct.
It's not relevant that things happened in their own time. People get fired all the time for not representing the values of the business outside the office all the time as well.

There is a difference between employment, when you actively sign documents acknowledging the company's requirements regarding representation, and school, where attendance is 'mandatory', there is nothing in writing regarding representation of the school (if one wants to colorize it as such). I believe the students would have a position as the 'harmed party' if the school were to attempt to ban them.

It may be arranged by the school, but the students pay for it.

If I make a post that is derogatory of government should the government ban me from government buildings? If I said something derogatory about my kids school should they ban me from being able to pick up my kids from there or attending a school board meeting?

Sorry, but your argument is unconvincing. I have also btw advocated that businesses not fire employee's for something they say outside of work time UNLESS they are wearing the businesses recognizable uniform. That they do fire people for such is wrong. However as private business they do have more leeway. Public Schools however are government run and have FAR less leeway.

Based on the Brandi Levy case, the school probably would get slapped, MUCH after the fact, for denying them prom entry. Of course, they would still be denied prom entry, much like Brandi never did finish cheerleading...

Although I still think there's a sizable difference between her off-campus actions and this...

There's gotta be a workable solution to keep these 2 out of prom somehow, but it's not occurring to me at the moment...

Perhaps if the student/prom leaders get together and petition the school/district?

Prom isn't mandatory. And you can kick kids of your school who refuse to comply with your code of conduct. You end up agreeing with that written requirement as soon as you're a student/teacher/janitor whatever connected to the school.

The First Amendment protects even dumb speech.

I don't think that anyone should be punished because no harm was intended and drawing more attention to this incident will simply cause even more hurt feelings and polarization.

Maybe just Anna Peckham (look it up), but I just found this article that this "sign" isn't even original

    https://www.kare11.com/article/news...posal/89-0050d0fc-1eaf-4f67-aa20-d2f9f8236cb9

No word on how that prom turned out, although it precipitated the school district to modify their classroom plans for 2 days...

Bold: Doesn't matter. You admitted yourself that the school would get slapped for punishing them for this. No amount of petitioning will change that.

What COULD happen though if you're so intent on getting these kids punished outside of their parents and the social media accounts is if the students, while at the prom, completely ignored those kids. Refuse to even acknowledge their presence. Perhaps do the same in the days leading up to the prom even. Maybe even for a time after prom. Beyond that though, there is nothing that anyone else can legally do.

Question though, just how much punishment do you think these kids should endure? Lifetime ostracization? Denial of getting into college? Denial of future jobs? I ask because for Nick Sandman all of these things were demanded by people on the left. And he didn't even do anything wrong.

That's a dipshit sign. He's going to regret thinking that was funny. But when you HYPER FOCUS on race, you end up with more racist ****.

OK, sure, Superintendent Stirn, but this wasn't "in our schools or our school-sponsored activities", was it? It was apparently outside of school and after school hours.

The most popular rap song in the country last week was "Big Energy" by Latto (apparently that's short for "Miss Mulatto"). Here are the lyrics:

source: Latto - Big Energy Lyrics | AZLyrics.com

What do you think should happen to students who sing the words of that song? What about those who write them down? What about those who listen to that song within earshot of others? Should they be barred from attending prom? Should colleges they apply to be informed about their racist musical selection? Should they be expelled for it?

So what that students pay for an extra curriculum school event. It highly probably is a school event like any other prom in the country where the school is responsible for the safety of the children etc,... and not some private closed party.

I doubt it. If someone does hand pick cotton it is probably done by illegal aliens.
