I'm glad my parents had the sense to teach us how to use guns when we were in grade school. Includes sister, too. From Extract While gun-owning parents are obligated to keep deadly weapons out of the reach of untrained kids, one recent narrative belies the notion that children should never have access to guns. Home alone Tuesday afternoon, a 13-year-old Ladson, S.C., boy faced an immediate threat when a man attempted to force his way inside the house. According to authorities, the unidentified child retrieved his mothers firearm and began firing through the door, hitting 31-year-old Lamar Brown three times. The suspect fired back with his own gun, the boy told police. Brown was transported by apparent accomplice Ira Bennett, 28, to a local hospital, where the would-be burglar later died. Though Bennett apparently tried to explain Browns injuries and a number of bullet holes in the car by claiming someone shot at them on the highway. Bennett is facing criminal charges including first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm while committing a violent crime.
The 13 year old boy will probably be spending plenty of time in a psychiatrist's office due to the trauma of killing someone. Not a wise thing to have a gun in the house!
You are assuming trauma where none may exist. The deceased was a clear and present danger. The very fact that the boy was able to get the firearm and pull the trigger where many children might well have curled up into a ball suggests he understands the necessity of his actions given the danger he was in and will be just fine.
Self defense usually is apparent in us all. Children in America, no matter what their age, you put a gun in their hands, their automatic instinct is to point it and shoot it correctly - it is just a natural reaction. America is a gun culture, and always will be. Somebody breaking into your house, at age 13 - home alone - armed - yea, you would either run like hell, or reach for a gun if available. In this case, although a gun usually shouldn't be available to kids, one was, and he used it naturally. Probably will have psychiatric problems to deal with over the incident (most adults wouldn't). You give kids BB guns - as natural a gift in this country for, oh, forever - and they are going to shoot birds with it usually, the temptation to use it and test it's effectiveness is ingrained in us, despite the PC Democratic Party and the Women's movement trying to turn all our children into pansy victims. They would rather have the child abducted or killed, than allow it to protect themselves with a gun. Got no problem with this - most house burglaries, although the time wasn't stated, occur during the day. Kids usually are in school - unfortunately for this guy - somebody was home and could react with lethal effectiveness - well done.........
DUDE... you totally called it with posting #3... you were 17 minutes off it seems, but good call... lol - - - Updated - - - better he be alive and spend time with a therapist... than be dead and buried in a grave by the undertaker... right?
The same amount of trauma a 13 yr old boy would have being "molested" by his hot 25yr old teacher I'm guessing=) I bet his trauma is far less since he's alive and has the confidence to defend himself compared to being beaten to death by a psychotic burglar? I think anyone would take that trade.
At least the kid was old enough to at least understand the weapon. Any younger, and it could have been a disaster.
Well, I was thinking he could have found it and shot himself by accident..., but damn, you make a valid point
I note that there was no mention of a back door, or that anyone else was in the home. If nobody else home, first option should have been to get out of there, particularly since there were two of them and fired only if he couldn't get out. Playing John Wayne with an intruder, even if you're armed, is simply not a very good move. Any 13 year old, IMO, is more than old enough to know how to use a gun (I got my first when I was about 10). I'd also like to know how the shots were grouped, because since there were only three holes in the perp, and three bullets in screen, he must have been awfully cool. So, glad it turned out ok for him and the family. Maybe I ought to send them a sign for their front door:
I built a couple of warehouses in Ladson years ago.. I would say use the gun and don't leave the house.
The kid will undoubtedly suffer trauma, but it's the better alternative. I well remember a 9-1-1 dispatch audio of a woman who shot and killed an intruder as she was speaking to the dispatcher. She fell apart. It was not a jump up for joy moment for her.
This is clear evidence that all thirteen year olds should be allowed to carry a gun. Particularly important as school violence is on the increase. No more bullying on the playground for sure!
Better than spending a lot of time in a grave. The criminal was entering with a gun. Seems the facts prove you wrong.
If that was my child, in that situation I would have told him to get out of the house as quickly as possible. The fact that he thought that getting a gun was the best cause of action is worrying. Two men in his house but only one shot and then chasing after the car! Not brave but stupid. I'm sure that tv was worth it.
If you really believe that, you should put a sign in your yard that reads: Gun free zone! That way the criminals will know to target your house first.
