I'm watching MSNBC. Chris Matthews just said that Al Qaida was created in response to the invasion of Iraq.

    Who here believes that?

    Al Qaeda IN Iraq....yes.

That meme of the Right that they were already there upto 2002 doesn't jive with what we know about Saddam Hussein, who HATED the religious extremists as much as he hated the Kurds and used all his internal police to crush, kill, or imprison.

It's always humorous that the Right never sees the contradictions about Saddam's Iraq that they believe....he was BOTH a brutal dictator who repressed his own people BUT ALSO let 1000s of Islamic jihadists who wanted to topple him exist in peace and harmony a few miles north of Baghdad.

The truth is...when we knocked down Saddam....Al Qaeda IN IRAQ...was freed.

Perhaps the more important question who is sitting around at 2:00 in the afternoon listening to Chris Matthews?

That's not what he said. He said Al Qaida was created as a response to the invasion. He did not say "in Iraq". He was quite clear and even repeated it.

Does anyone believe that? Was Chris Matthews statement accurate? Can anyone answer without qualifying their stand?

Then that would be in error. He should have said "Al Qaeda IN IRAQ was caused by the Iraq invasion".

    But he didn't say that.

So then you say he was wrong?

    I stand corrected.

Perhaps the more important question is who is sitting around at 11:00 in the morning listening to Chris Matthews?

I just wanted to make sure you weren't one of these guys who have this need to parse words. Like when you ask someone if a particular comment was a lie and the respond with. " the statement was not a representation of the absolute truth, but I would hesitate to call it a lie".

Could you share a link to the discussion. This depends entirely on the context in which it was stated.

No...but I wonder if you'd be an equally partisan person who would "parse words"....if I pointed out that say Glenn Beck openly LIED to his fans at his "Restoring Honor" rally a few years back...

or would you say "Yes, Beck lied"?

    The context?

He said that Al Qaida was created as a response to the invasion of Iraq.

Now, Chris Matthews is a flaming left wing hack, but I assume that he knows that comment was false. All I can believe is that he is now trying to revise history.

    - - - Updated - - -

I have no idea what Beck said as I don't listen to him.

Then laugh and enjoy the joke. Don't get all riled up because he made a stupid omission. He's a professional and says stupid stuff all the time.

Turn off MSNBC. Turn off Fox. If you want news, try the BBC World Service. At least it doesn't support either party.

I thought Al Qaeda was dissolving to join Isis.

But Al Qaeda was in existence a long time before America even got involved in the Middle east at all.

Then came Operation Cyclone was the code name for the United States Central Intelligence Agency program to arm and finance the Afghan mujahideen prior to and during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, 1979 to 1989. The program leaned heavily towards supporting militant Islamic groups that were favored by neighboring Pakistan, rather than other, less ideological Afghan resistance groups that had also been fighting the Marxist-oriented Democratic Republic of Afghanistan regime since before the Soviet intervention. Operation Cyclone was one of the longest and most expensive covert CIA operations ever undertaken;[1] funding began with $20–$30 million per year in 1980 and rose to $630 million per year in 1987.[2] Funding continued after 1989 as the Mujahideen battled the forces of Mohammad Najibullah's PDPA during the Civil war in Afghanistan (1989–1992).[3]

The US has been involved in the middle east since 1945. Long bbefore Al Qaeda was formed.

Good gawd. Who twisted your knickers?

First, was it an intentional omission or just misstatement? Second, I watch various sources for news. I like to see how different people view the same world events

    What's the problem with that?

You could put Matthews on the back of a wagon, run him around a field and let him spew his BS, and a farmer could double his crop yield.

    From Wiki.

al-Qaeda (/ælˈkaɪdə/ al-KY-də; Arabic: القاعدة‎ al-qāʿidah, Arabic: [ælqɑːʕɪdɐ], translation: "The Base" and alternatively spelled al-Qaida and sometimes al-Qa'ida) is a global militant Islamist and Wahhabist organization founded by Osama bin Laden, Abdullah Azzam,[24][25] and several other militants,[26] at some point between August 1988[27] and late 1989,

The first Gulf war started in 1990.

Chris Mathews clearly should have said, "I have a new job as a greeter at a WalMart and I'm leaving this job to Al Sharpton and Charlie Sheen.
