Cleaning, rust and corrosion prevention, what do you use?

i pretty much just use hoppes for all firearm cleaning/oiling.

 

That's why hammer fired guns irritate me. How does so much lint get in there? It's black magic I tell you.

 

Most guns are hammer fired, the difference is the firing pin a part of the hammer or is the hammer striking a floating firing pin?

The latter design, with a floating pin, is more susceptible to a failure to fire by foreign matter, to operate properly that design must have a firing pin spring strong enough to not fire the primer should the firearm be dropped on a hard surface muzzle down and enough mass to ensure firing the primer when the hammer drops.

There is a third type, the slam fire which has a fixed firing pin as part of the bolt, think MAC-10 MAC-11, this is the simplest design and is quite reliable for offensive or defensive use, and if loaded with sub-sonic ammunition can be suppressed nicely, no sonic boom from the exiting bullet.

The downside is very poor single shot accuracy, having the bolt slam shut and a few microseconds later the round goes off unless the gun is stoutly head, the round will hit below the intended target, hence the zipper.

For this reason the MAC's where only offered in Full-Auto, however nowadays they are offered in Semi-Auto, but anyone who would buy one for other the ("Show-Off) factor is tossing money to the wind.

 

To answer the lint factor, lint is less of a problem then rust, in the 1911 (and that's the only handgun I work with) the tolerances between the firing pin and the bolt are tight enough to preclude the entrance of even fine sand into that machined part of the bolt.

Rust on the other hand can cause a failure to fire, to prevent that, a light weight non-evaporating lubricant should be sprayed into the assembled chamber containing the firing pin within the bolt, the firearm or bolt assembly should then be set front/muzzle/cartridge end down and allowed to fully drain of excess lubricant.

Once fully drained, the front should be wiped clean of any lubricant to prevent any lubricant to primer migration, and then the firearm can put back in service.

 

OT question, ever tried cleaning jewelry with it and if you have how well does it work.

I ask because I would like to also use the ultrasonic unit for cleaning our jewelry, more uses equals greater value and wife acceptance.

 

I haven’t but it’s designed for jewelry and such. I’m sure it would work awesome.

I mean transgenders do have a ridiculous rate of suicide. Should they have their gun rights taken away?

 

A lot has to do with where you live in the country. When I was still living in the desert southwest even striker-fired guns like a Glock can get packed with dust and lint. I had to clean my carry pistol about once a week.

Now, I live in Montana, and I find very little lint or dust getting into even my hammer-fired pistols like my 1911.

 

Boeshield T9 is what I used on my boat in Florida and it is excellent. Spray and also squeeze bottle for a thick coat of protection on stainless.
T9 kept my railings looking new and made my boat easy to sell. Great stuff. No firearm.

Yeah the sand in the ME is like talcum powder made out of razor blades. That crap is awful.

 

Totally incorrect, the NRA supports laws that prohibit the possession of firearms and ammunition by felons and those convicted of "Domestic Violence."

As for the mentally ill, the NRA has a policy that they should lose their the rights under the Second to own firearms and ammunition, but HIPPA and Doctor Patient requirements, prohibit such information to be entered into the FBI NICS.

The NRA does not support license requirements for firearms ownership, acquisition, or possession, to be legal activities to engage in. They believe that any individual who has no disqualifying record should be able to purchase a firearm, or even multiple firearms, as they see fit. At the same time they do not support the illegal acquisition of firearms by those who are prohibited from ownership, and hold that they should be prosecuted for when they choose to disregard the law and illegally acquire firearms regardless.

The two standards are not mutually exclusive to one another.
