I'm sure video will pop up of CNN reporting this but CNN just reported on air that Romney is correct. 46.4% of Americans do NOT pay any income tax. Of course this doesn't include the millions of illegal immigrants. Then of course the #'s will be higher.

That has to change. They need to get some skin in the game. Then, they will not be so crazy for higher taxes and bigger gov't.

This is a pretty commonly known fact. The fact that most lib's don't realize this just shows what type of people they really are. Selfish and lazy.

Income taxes are 27% of the budget. There's also payroll tax, state and local tax, personal property tax, business taxes, dog licenses, marriage licenses, gas tax, cigarette tax, emissions tax, etc.

People pay taxes. They pay a lot of taxes.

A fair system would be to abolish the income tax and move towards consumption and force the government to run off what it makes.

Perhaps this link will clarify what you omitted to mention.

"...abolish the income tax and move towards consumption and force the government to run off what it makes."

    Taxcutter says:
    Terrific idea.

Romney has boiled the big issue down: Moochers vs taxpayers.

I'm not sure what that 46.4% number means, and it is pretty apparent that you don't either. Does it include stay at home moms? Does it include kids? Does it include geezers? Does it include the sick and the lame? Maybe it's VOTERS only since Romney is talking about people who won't VOTE for him. I'm thinking that 46.4% of AMERICANS paying income taxes is is a pretty big number.

    From the Census Bureau:

23.7% of Americans are under age 18.

13.3% of Americans are age 65 or older.

    http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html

Add those figure up and you've got 37% of the population right there. It's a very flawed way to look at things and say 47% don't pay taxes. Sure, some kids work and pay taxes; so do some seniors. However, it's not enough to justify saying that 47% of Americans don't pay income tax with the implication being that all those folks are parasites.

Romney is promoting to his own brand of class warfare. It's a great soundbite for those in the Romney bubble, but has little meaning in the real world. It certainly won't win over the voters he needs to beat Obama in November.

The OP says that 46.6% of "Americans" do not pay income taxes. That's a big number when you consider that in a family of four there may be only one person with an income. That'd be 25% by my calculations. Republicans have always had trouble with arithmetic.

Should I put my 12-year old to work? How about my 84-year old mother? That might bring your percentage up.

Of course this doesn't include the regressive effective 15% FICA tax they pay half of directly and they pay the other half indirectly thru their employer. Of course this doesn't include the often regressive state and local taxes they pay.

But if your goal is to demean the not wealthy Americans as it is for many conservatives including Mitt, by all means, focus on this one data bit and tell everyone how they are lazy, call themselves victims, and don't take responsibility for their lives.

Most of those taxes doesn't go to help pay on the Federal debt. Although I can see good with a consumption tax, it would hurt the bigger and poorer families.

I agree with you on a lot of this. It is turning into class warfare and a black/white issue. However, there are a great deal of welfare abuses and the system of welfare is fairly broken. It does not provide any incentive or penalty for staying on it.

No taxes have gone to pay on the Federal debt since 2000, because that was the last year the Govt ran a surplus.

My post said nothing about the welfare system. But since you brought it up, what do you consider to be "welfare," how familiar are you with the welfare system, and what is your source of knowledge about it?

Brilliant. No link. No pertinent quotes/info to provide context.

But we'll just take your word for it because nobody on this site has twisted facts to fit their partisan worldview.

I'm using it in the general sense that Republicans are using it so that there is a frame of reference. As to familiarity, anecdotal to those living on my street growing up and family members on it.

I agree. While it's true that there are abuses of the system and Obama has said some dumb things (food stamps are economic stimulus), it is a totally false argument to say that 47% of Americans are leeches. It's also false to imply these are all Obama voters. Many of that 47% are too young to vote and many vote Republican. This whole 47% doesn't pay income tax mantra doesn't stand up to even the slightest scrutiny (most of that # aren't in the working age group), yet it is parroted over and over.

So who's playing the 'victim card'?

This red herring serves only to wed the Tea Partiers to the Corporatists. That it is not based in reality doesn't seem to matter at all to most.

It's time to kick them out of the wagon. Leave it for the elderly and infirm.

But, we do need increased domestic energy production and we need to protect American workers from Chinese cheap labor/slave labor.
