A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his. One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying. Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing?" She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over." Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA." The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That's a crazy idea, how would that be fair! I've worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!" The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, "Welcome to the conservative side of the fence." If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test! If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one. If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat. If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation. A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.. If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels. Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down. If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church. A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and Jesus silenced.
Liberals want other people's money. If they have money, they want control of other people. Conservatives want the opportunity to earn their own money. If they have money, they want to be left alone.
Once upon a time there was a mother who had a son and she said: If you are a conservative or a liberal in the political sense then you will very likely have opinions about things you know nothing about but feel the need to stand for because you have been persuaded that an imaginary boundary exists between you and the 'other side'. Half of you want to change the way we live because you think your label is right and the other half because you think others' labels are wrong. Unless you're actually happy in that label because ultimately labels are insignificant next to behaviours on a day to day basis. So in reality, I fully support your right to have a label cause it really doesn't define who you are, it just defines who you might appear to be to others. The End
WHat a stupid story, as usual silly comparisons that have nothing to do with what taxes are supposed to do . If that daughter had any brain she would simply say "that comparison doesnt make any sense" She could also make the argument that plenty of people cant even afford the fees of going to college , that plenty of school are underfunded and are dropping in quality that ... BS he wants to make sure its safe around them. And yes if means regulating them so be it, guns can be quit dangerous you know. BS BS More BS Because it has no place in gouvernement for the rest thats also BS LOL a lot of nonsensical BS thinking what 1 persons why you consider "liberal" says count for every liberal in the world.
You ever take a political science 100 class? you really should. You don't seem to understand much on the subject Also If a conservative sees a gay marriage they want to ban it If a liberal see a gay marriage they wish them a happy life with each other Same logic.....
Your telling the story of my Grand daughter by marriage. She used to chide me all the time for my conservative views saying we need to help people. When she turned 16, she got a job in a trendy mall clothes shop. She came to me with her first paycheck and asked me to look at it and see if she was being ripped off, she was making $8.50 an hour and she wasn't getting nearly that much and wanted me to explain the deductions. I pointed to the Federal income tax and said there's your problem right there. I interrupted her as she was trying to ask how can they take that much, I simply told her it was her contribution to helping other people. It's always so easy to be generous with other peoples money.
of course, its these kind of stereotypes that are the undoing of america. you drift further and further apart and don't appear to share anything in common with each other. the divided states of america.
How can conservatives compromise with liberals who want to redistribute their income to themselves? Obama voters want government to take care of them and conservatives know that cannot work and would not be fair even if it could be done.
im conservative about some things and liberal about others, as i assume most of you are. quit drawing lines in the sand and demonizing each other. the people of this country need to heal before the nation can heal. we are standing very divided, but we will be united when we fall.
Some arguments LOL typical, I think had that daughter any brain sadly she would be pretty quick disgusted of her father for having such a closed mind.
K995: "WHat a stupid story, as usual silly comparisons that have nothing to do with what taxes are supposed to do ." Oh, please, tell us what taxes are supposed to do. Some of us might think they're supposed to fund the operation of the government.
you illustrate my point nicely. the simplistic stereotypes you have re the other side means you just don't want to be friends.
exactly. if you find what you have in common first, and then you can look at resolving differences. on the other hand, if you want to pick a fight with people because of what you imagine them to be, you'll never even learn to talk to each other.
Its simple really, we, as members of society, should always be willing to help those in need, and critical of those who want but not need.
That's pretty funny. But the t-rex may well be a scavenger rather than a predator and some butterflies eat insects or draw fluids out of the carcases of insects which makes them omnivores. Funny on many levels.
I will respond using the words of the last great American President: "...If by a Liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties ... if that is what they mean by a Liberal, then Im proud to say Im a Liberal..." Senator John F. Kennedy 9/14/1960 The GOP want to give millionairs tax breaks and charge senior citizens more for Medicare.
Yea and do you want to let is in on the Kennedy Tax Breaks? In no way listening to Kennedy speeches of economics and taxation would he be a democrat today. In no way could I view his budgets and taxation policy of the 60's and imagine he would be a democrat today. Just so you know, the democratic party left that party a long time ago.
Can't speak for the GOP really, but most people are just fed up with being bled dry by leeches, and really worried about the welfare of the deserving. You see, the less we spend on those who don't need it, the more is left over for those who do.
