ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is downplaying the significance of a Supreme Court decision blocking him enforcing stringent attendance limits on religious institutions in Covid hot spots.

“That Supreme Court ruling on the religious gatherings is more illustrative of the Supreme Court than anything else,” Cuomo said on a Thanksgiving morning briefing call. “It’s irrelevant from any practical impact.”
    https://www.politico.com/states/new...-have-any-practical-effect-cuomo-says-1338228

...........the ruling is indicative of how Roberts has lost the ability to be the firewall protecting the country from the radical right wing views of the majority. A majority who's views are not reflective of the mainstream views of US citizens on any number of cases that may come before the court.

If the court rules in ways aligned with the ideological bent of members like Alito and Barrett then I suspect momentum will build for Biden to address the problem.

I disagree with this supreme court ruling. Nobody should be gathering all together inside of one space unless its some kind of emergency. Unfortunately, you guys would NEVER admit a poor judgement call made by the left (you guys should try to not be partisan all the time, its surprising how much headway people could make if they communicated like decent human beings). I do have a question though, why are anti trump and police protests allowed with no social distancing? I'll tell you why, because they HATE religion. Maybe if Cuomo displayed some equality in his executive orders the supreme court wouldn't have had to make this poor decision.
You guys complain about equality all the time but don't actually enforce it. If these rules apply to Church then they should apply to ALL SOCIAL GATHERINGS. The left should not be exempt from this.

Uh huh yeah we need to move the court to favor government power over individual liberty. Typically left The collective must always prevail..

I apologize if I misinterpreted. But you must understand that there is a point in which it's difficult to keep track of all these conspiracy theories that the right comes up with.

So what is the conspiracy that is intended to end religion and who are the participants?

It will be quite relevant when Cuomo goes to the well again. Roberts agreed with the majority, but voted that the suit was moot because Cuomo had already backed down. The First Amendment has been reinserted into the Bill of Rights.

Correct me if I'm, wrong but believe he was installed to be a justice, not a firewall.

Can you people make up your mind? Electoral college is bad because you want majority to elect the president, yet now you need a “firewall” shielding you from the majority?

What "firewall" are you talking about? Electoral college is not a firewall for anything. Except for the precept that one person-one vote. And that every person's vote should count the same.

I'm embarrassed for you that I have to explain the wishes of the majority of Americans are not represented by the SC's majority. That is a direct result of the EC not always reflecting how the majority of Americans vote in the general election. Are we clear now?

    Russia wants to end religion?

I see.. so that's why they got Trump elected. So cops would kill George Floyd which would create more BLM protests to which some people would not wear masks which would end with the destruction of Religion... Genius!!!!

Russian's goal to sow doubt and discord. They aren't particular about the means to achieve that goal.

I think Biden would tie his shoes together if someone didn't do it for him, he needs to address that first.

SCOTUS, or ANY court for that matter, is not supposed to rule based on mainstream views of US Citizens. When are leftists going to learn this? That they believe that they should and want them to shows that they don't actually care about freedom or Rights. Just big government and imposing their views on everyone else, no matter the cost.

When having constitutional rights becomes radical right wing views the left has become an enemy of the state.

Cuomo should not just be overruled by the supreme court he should be removed from office and prosecuted for sedition.

We have no room for dictators in our country. Anybody calling constitutional rights a far right wing views are enemies of the state.

The problem is, for Biden to "address" any of this, he needs a Dem-controlled Senate. I find it unlikely that the two runoff races will both go Dem. So maybe in 2022.

But then, the only way for Biden to "address" it would be by packing the court. He has already said that he is not a fan of the idea. One Dem senator, from West Virginia, has said he will never vote for packing the court, which would make the Dems have at most 49 votes on this, even if they win both Georgia runoffs. With 49-51, there would no tie to break by veep Harris, so the effort would fail.

And also, you know that I'm entirely for containing Covid-19, but also, I'm not for authoritarian measures. I'm for educational campaigns. I haven't seen any. I speak five languages and have many ties with foreign countries (out of international scientific collaborations between my university and foreign groups) so I routinely watch foreign TV through satellite and online subscriptions. In many foreign countries there are public health announcements in the form of 30-second video clips with rotating points (making one simple point at a time), educating the population on Covid-19, social distancing, proper mask use, etc. None, here. We see some governors trying to implement some mandatory rules, and not many Americans are willing to follow them. That doesn't work. By culture, we are a rebellious, freedom-loving people, and we resent governmental authority.

Finally, even though I am a big advocate for control of the virus, I think the SCOTUS is actually right. The letter of the US Constitution does support religious freedom. So, even though the SCOTUS decision may be scientifically unsound and may contribute to further spread of the virus, in the letter of the law it is true that imposing restrictions on religious services is unconstitutional.

In my humble opinion, much better would have been for Governor Cuomo to invite to his office the leaders of the main religions in New York, and have a long and nice talk with them, ASKING for collaboration. He could have suggested a number of measures THEY might want to freely adopt, such as outdoor services, offering more services in alternation so that the faithful could gather in smaller numbers during each service, implementing social distancing during the services, soliciting mask use during the services, etc.

I guarantee that he'd have achieved better results, than trying to impose mandatory rules. He touched a nerve, the freedom of religion nerve, which is indeed enshrined in our constitution, so the SCOTUS reacted accordingly.

One of the justices said in his opinion, "it's not because of being in the middle of a pandemic that we can toss out the Constitution." And legally speaking, he is right.

You realize many of these protests are not only peaceful, but a vast majority are masked, right? And hoe many do you think decided to protest without getting approval first, especially the violent protests?
Its been allowed because the freedom of assembly is part of the 1A.

Where was the social distancing during that Million MAGA March?
