Democrats hated Lincoln as much as they hate Trump

When Abraham Lincoln came to the presidency, he faced a nation more deeply unhappy and divided than our nation is today. The southern democrats hated him for interfering in their slave culture, and the northern democrats agreed that owning slaves was the right of the white man. The democrats from north and south, the democratic editors of newspapers, heaped unending insults upon him. Compare that democratic hatred of Lincoln to the present: now they are trying to rewrite history to say Lincoln was really a democrat all along.

You have to go back through Google 5 pages or so before you can get clear of the propaganda misinformation campaign that is actually trying to put forth the revised history that somehow, up is down and down is up, and republicans are really slave owners while Lincoln is a democrat. But I did manage to find some truth on the subject.

    This Civil War site, https://www.battlefields.org/learn/articles/evidence-unpopular-mr-lincoln
tells the truth about the criticism heaped on Lincoln by the democratic press and opinion-makers.

Here is the fake dossier on Lincoln; work of the New York fake news of the Civil War era. It is a Copperhead (Democrat resistance) pamphlet from 1864 by Charles Chauncey Burr, a magazine editor from New York City. The Copperheads sometimes talked of violent resistance and in some cases started to organize. Metropolitan Record was the official Catholic newspaper reflecting Irish American opinion in New York City. In 1863 it became a Copperhead organ. In the spring and summer of 1863, the paper urged its Irish working-class readers to pursue armed resistance to the draft passed by Congress earlier in the year. When the draft began in the city, working class European Americans, largely Irish, responded with violent riots from July 13 to 16, lynching, beating and hacking to death more than 100 black New Yorkers and burning down black-owned businesses and institutions, including an orphanage for 233 black children. On August 19, 1864 the newspaper's editor, John Mullaly, was arrested for inciting resistance to the draft.

Democrats are trying to cover up their footprints, but it just doesn't fly. The hatred they heaped on Lincoln then is parallel to the hatred they heap on Trump now.

Political partisanship of the days of Lincoln aside, you are seriously comparing Trump to Lincoln? Really?

Why not they both support all Americans no matter what color.

No, I am comparing democrats today with democrats of civil war era - clearly, they never changed and never turned over a new leaf. They are the same people, trying to steal the fruits of other people's labor. And when the majority disagree and vote in a president who might thwart that goal, the dems get vicious.

I got interested in looking this up because of D'Souza's new film, Death of a Nation. He does try to make a connection between Trump and Lincoln but that doesn't fly with me.

What does ring true is the national atmosphere that both presidents inherited, and the unfounded hatred the democrats then and now have unleashed through the media, newspapers, etc. If anyone here, left or right leaning, does not think the talking heads and fake left propaganda machine are not advocating violence, they need to enroll in situational awareness classes.

Yes, the Democratic hatred of Lincoln is comparable to what Trump is experiencing. Reagan was also hated by the Dems, but not quite to the levels of Lincoln or Trump.

Lincoln would have never become president if it weren't for Democratic cheating and malfeasance starting during the Illinois Senate race in 1858.

Lincoln actually won the popular vote after the Lincoln-Douglas debates but not a single Democratic representative in Springfield voted to acknowledge his victory.

Lincoln should have been a sitting Senator in 1860 and Seward would have probably been the Republican nominee.

And the Democratic convention split up after 57 rounds of voting and a lack of compromise. Typical Democrats even back then.

Lincoln won the presidency with 39.7% of the popular vote as the Democrats ended up with two ticket choices.

And then there was the 2016 Democratic convention where the delegates voted to nominate Hillary even after they knew she had cheated in the primaries and had broken many Federal laws.

The odds against both Lincoln and Trump becoming president speaks volumes.

And for those of us who are knowledgeable about the dirty and ugly history of the Democratic Party up until this very day, there is a sense of poetic justice at hand.

Like it or not, Trump is the new Lincoln...

The left inflicts hatred on virtually everyone who could pose a threat to their power.

They spewed hate at John McCain when he ran for president, and he was one of the most bipartisan Republican presidential candidates ever.

They spewed hate on Mitt Romney, who was a moderate Republican who most people considered an honorable man.

They spewed hate at Reagan, a lot of hate that is almost comparable to what they're doing to Trump.

What liberals/progressives/socialists don't realize is that they, along with the elite Republican establishment, created the opportunity for a Trump. And they still don't see it...

Sharpie, I thought that you were smarter than that. The evolution of BOTH parties in the last 150 years has made their names irrelevant in terms of traditional partisan issues.

Republicans NOW are the ones defending Confederate monuments, while Democrats are the civil rights activists. . . . And shouldn't the Republican hatred of Obama, our first black President, be worthy of mention???

Your analogy has too many conflicting variables to be considered valid. Voters should concentrate on PRESENT partisan considerations of important issues. . . . Political parties are not static entities.

My brother's first name is Donald, but I don't blame HIM for Trump's mistakes. A name can identify you, but it doesn't define you.

As for advocating violence, who are the ones asking for stricter gun control legislation???

That's what I was talking about when I began this post. I was appalled at the upside down thinking. Maybe one morning some dems just woke up and said, "Oh yeah, I get it. Law and order matters! There must have been a cosmic shift because I know I'm a democrat yet I'm thinking like a conservative!"

It just means you have leaned in to some conservative thinking. It doesn't represent a switcheroo.

Lincoln was a tyrant, and set many disastrous precedents. I see why you'd want to appropriate him, but it's just not accurate.

Regardless of the laws that exist that do or don't protect lifeforms other than humans, she is obviously is a sociopathic murderous blood thirsty ****wad that deserves the same mercy and respect that she showed for one of nature's other creatures. The planet and the state of humanity would be a better place without her kind....a bonafide, certified, dyed in the wool, genuine freak of nature.

It is also notable that trump supporters are geographically the same ones who started a war against the US, and ultimately killed Lincoln - The South.

The names have changed but the song remains the same. Those were Southern Democrats which don't exist anymore. They are now Republicans.

These are the same people who oppose removing from public lands, symbols celebrating the war against the US - Confederate Flags and Statues.

When you see a liberal flying a Confederate Flag, celebrating a war against the US, let me know.

Wow. Willful, cynical ignorance, or utter, abject stupidity? I'll leave it to the reader to decide, but I'm leaning in Ron White's direction... :icon_jawdrop:

Irish conscripts were commonly used as something very close to cannonfodder in the Union Army. Viewed as they were by many other whites as not much better than blacks coupled with their admitted ferocity in battle and resistance to 'breaking ranks', they were commonly sent in first when the enemy had a superior position or losses were expected to be exceptionally high. This was also a big part of the Irish/Catholic 'resistance' to conscription.
