Impeachment talk is popular in some less serious circles of course. There are left wing pundits and some progressives that feel the need to feed their base some quotes and rabble rousing oratory. We Dems and left of center folk have our share of political whores who think 'you gotta work the room' to get the media attention and get some checkbooks out. But nobody with any political acumen takes their stuff seriously whether they are left wing or right wing exploiters. We are just blessed that our choice of standard-bearers were never among them.
Please double down on Kavanaugh. This lost them the Senate, I see no reason why it couldn't lose them 2020 too. 67 votes in the Senate needed to do anything, impeachment doesn't mean **** it's like an indictment. Means he's eligible for a trial in the Senate. They'd be far better off saving up their political capital and packing the court hardcore next time they're in power. Which they'll almost certainly do anyway.
Yeah. Zero chance of conviction in a GOP Senate (even if Trump killed his wife and burned the American Flag). IF, the Dems think that a show trial (with Zero chance of conviction) like the GOP did to Clinton is warranted --they can do what they want. BUT, at this time, I would recommend against impeachment. Just submit Trump to the slow burn of Congressional Hearings and subpoenas.
That is the safe and likely scenario. I'd note that it didn't work for the GOP House after 2010, the incumbent was nonetheless relected in 2012. Impeachment over Trump preferring chocolate to vanilla ice-cream (ie: a consciously frivolous impeachment) could be useful, but will be unsuccessful and we're unsure how this would backfire going into 2020. With Ginsburg having another fall and breaking three ribs this week 2020 is looking absolutely crucial for Dems. They need to avoid having to pack the court as much as possible, and winning 2020 would alleviate this need to a great degree. Ginsburg and Breyer would retire instantly and that would be that. Like you, I'm not sure its worth risking it all.. Again. The Kavanaugh debacle was a complete disaster for Dems, and if you keep pushing all in every hand eventually your opposition is going to catch on to your bluffing and call you down. I think the best thing Dems could do is to avoid obstruction, to pass a moderately bipartisan agenda through to the Senate, block all legislation originating from Trump, and restrain the radicals within their party. To demonstrate ability to govern when in opposition. Then to use the large majority they would get in 2020 to ram through revenge bills left and right for 2 years. But tensions are high on all sides and it's going to be difficult to resist sabotaging their 2020 chances for instant gratification.
Well said. Good stuff. The Dems gotta play it cool, forget about imprachment, and pursue a slow burn strategy.
Although I don't think it's justified, that would indeed be the smart move. Very difficult to avoid obstructionism in this scenario. Many have been calling Trump Hitler-lite for going on 3 years, it's hard to then turn around and not blanket block everything his administration does. But if they do this they'll have to pack the court, something which nobody really wants but some may find necessary.
Trump has a new Senate makeup that will be able to ram through any of his judicial nominees. Murkowski and Collins have lost their power. The best the Dems can hope for is that Ginsburg (and the SC Liberals) survive until 2021, and they can keep Trump's agenda at bay while hoping they reclaim the Presidency in 2020.
That's a possibility, but the court is already conservatice enough to block effectively any gun control legislation, a sizable chunk of the Democrats agenda even. They need to hope for a retirement from Thomas, then they can avoid packing the court. Otherwise they kind of have no option. That or accept a multiple decade setback to "progress".
Sure. We want the government to continue to be entertaining. No harm done since removal from office requires a super majority vote in the senate. I always find it entertaining when they investigate each other. I like it too because it takes time from making laws which is good. The less the congress does, the better. Thanks to the voters for assuring two more years of congressional gridlock.
It wasn't a House proceeding it was a Senate proceeding. Why would the House investigate the Senate proceeding. Can you cite an instance when this has ever happened? What are you claiming of any material values he knowingly lied about in order to obstruct the hearing and be specific.
Funny how a Yahoo search on the first page shows the NYT, CBS, Mother Jones, NBC all "talking" about it.
The House tinkering with the bailiwick and responsibilities of the Senate would be a wonderful thing for the USA.
McConnell particularly likes Collins, and said there will be plenty money for her from the RNC when she runs again. So things look good for Collins if she wants to stay and continue to work into her seventies.
Most likely add John Podesta, Huma Abedin, and Sanctuary city Mayors. This will be the Greatest Show On Earth.
