Agreed. The main motivation, at least for those paying to produce the movie, is to make a profit.

Well, I'm SORRY if fans are genuinely offended by my critique. I have to call them on what I feel are crucial errors. I am against Hollywood also for mucking around with remakes, and for cliche stories and bad acting as well. I haven't been to a show since the last LUCAS DIRECTED Star Wars, and well the last Star Trek Discovery and theatre remakes were and ARE TREASON, a betrayal of a great original cast, and TNG. Movies are just about a quick cash-in anymore, not quality. Star Trek Discovery has Klingons as enemies again -BORING!

new Doctor Who? ( Put It Out of Its Misery!)

Doctor Who was never about lavish productions or computer graphics, but was a classic SciFi adventure built around by great character driven stories, solid acting performances, and fantastic imagination. Even at a low ebb, most Doctor Who episodes of the first 25 years were lightyears ahead of their time. If Doctor Who was ever about ANYTHING it was about trascendence, of limits, real or perceived, of course.

Note: classic Doctor Who series was written by professional theatre playwrights and professional theatre actors.

The Dalek aliens - my avatar - as created by writer Terry Nation were a euphemism for THE WAR MACHINE.

The new Doctor Who has angels, demons, rings, lighting bolts, is this Lord of the Rings, Who, or Harry Potty? And when David Tennant jumps at least 40 feet, (if not 60-80 feet) out of a plane, thru the ceiling plate glass window onto a marble floor face first - to tackle his arch enemy the Master - he doesn't die, [episode: David Tennant, End of Time] regenerate or nothing, is he Superman now?

You have to admit that it is nowhere near the quality of classic Who.

Try watching the old Jon Pertwee episodes again for a reminder. The acting is better than the majority of Hollywood stuff produced today, (and hence, more believable). Tom Baker and Colin Baker are all so fun. I blame Jon Nathan Turner for not standing up to BBC execs who wanted to fire the briiliant 6th Doctor - Colin Baker - dramatic actor extraordinaire, hillarious comedic timing, showing a great passionate sensitivity, respect, and bravery to the role - expertise Peter Davison lacked for 3 insufferable seasons - my family all five of us would watch Who on PBS in whole 2 hour commercial free weekly hours, boy did the group of us let out a collective huge SIGH OF RELIEF when Castrovalva ended. We felt psychically drained. Jon Nathan Turner hackney wardrobe, cheapened sets, awful script an insulting end to Tom Baker triumphs in heroic buffoonery -but what SEEMED LIKE FOREVER and a day later after Jon Nathan Turner/Peter Davison killed the message, (and the messenger) Colin Baker saved the last dignity of the Doctor - from March 1984 to Dec. 1986.

Colin Baker above , the last good Doctor Who

Watch "Trial of a Timelord" -Colin Baker (Star Trek Next Generation stole the Matrix idea from Doctor Who, so did Keanu Reeves: 5 times - 2 terrible bill/ted and 3 horrid Matrix films, dude you suck at acting retire)

    Sylvester McCoy sucked.

Some favorites of classic Who: Death to the Daleks, The Mutants, the Daemons, as well as, the Android Invasion, the Brain of Morbius, and Revelation of the Daleks is quite good, too.

I always enjoy being an inspiration to others ... I had a thread title above 6 years ago ...

I like Quinto's Spock. He has more fire than Nimoy's often robotic Spock. For example, when he told the Vulcan academy to "live long and prosper" while making those words sound exactly like "go **** yourself". And when it comes to masculinity, Quinto is way ahead of gay ass Nimoy. I'm also glad they got a guy to play Sulu who isn't the gayest man in existence.

I cannot take seriously the opinion of anyone who thinks the Lucas prequels were "great". The reason that Abrams ended up doing Star Wars in the first place is because of how badly Lucas screwed the pooch on those God awful movies. I thought The Force Awakens was meh, but I have yet to see any character in Abrams' Star Wars that is anywhere near as bad as Jar Jar Binks.

That's just it. You don't get it.

It's not just STAR WARS - it has infected the entire Sci-Fi genre. They sell out to corporatism, in the same way Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers whore out to the Democrat Party.

The propaganda and the merchandising. Iron Man was some stupid war on terror bulls__t.
And last week, I went to the BBC website, there were literally 663 Doctor Who products on
there - every unimaginable kind of trinket, mug - as the shows languish in absurdity.

And did you see that big stupid green monster in 'Dark Night Rises' - what a suck fest -
and the useless cameo of Batgirl - why so they can sell costumes at Holyweenie?

This garbage commercialism is impossible to sit through - why bother w/ Netflix at all ?

Well - no one will listen to Hollywoods political prostitutes anymore, now that they've been exposed as a bunch of molesters.

Corporate America, movie producers, - who don't want Americans to have heroes - actors just take fat paychecks and play along. Heroes give the people hope or the realization that the status quo can be changed, or like X-Files - they don't want the public to know and gain power from the fact that we Americans can 'Fight the Future.' So corporate America killed the hero. Nolan killed the good guy in Batman, because Christian Bale seemed like some yuppie snob. Star Wars killed Solo, even Mulder is a shadow of his former self. They turned Capt. Kirk into a hot-shot, stuck up punk kid.The Rock is just not a guy you care about, or Angelina Jolie doing cartwheels or even the chick from Kill Bill. These are not accidents. It is the same reason corporate America killed rock n roll and heavy metal with no message posers like Axl Rose, Motley Crue, and Poison, they wanted to kill our culture, kill our soul, and above all kill your heroes warrior spirit to fight and change things for the better.

Something about the new genre whether Bond, Stargate or whoever the actors - don't command a presence like Swarzenneger, Roger Moore or Shaun Connery, where you care what happens to the guy or can relate to them. Daniel Craig as Bond is a classless thug running around shooting everyone. The thing about Luke Skywalker or Han Solo is that they were genuine, thats what made them so popular. There was certainty purity about it, where you knew Ben Kenobi was going to transcend because he embodied the good guy - whereas Christian Bale was some conceited uppity capitalist guy coming out the party with a whore on each arm. i was hoping the whole time that Heath Ledger killed Batman because the new one seemed like a yuppie snob, but I just took the disc out after 40 min. like who needs a 3 hour superhero movie?

Notice that sudden reaction by Han Solos son (dressed as the new Vader) when the General announces his plan to destroy the planets, or when he wavers when Han Solo confronts his son - this is not how evil works

There is no grey area as our politicians use excuses such as 'bad intelligence' on Iraq, ISIS, or 9/11. Evil is diabolic, pre-planned slaughter, war is no accident. The message corporate America wants to send via Disney and JJ Abrams- is that THE CORPORATE WARMONGERS WANT US TO BE PSYCHOLOGIZED TO BELIEVE THERE ARE ONLY SHADES OF GREY in war in order to condition a young or naive generation that current American wars are somehow not caused by our own bureaucrats but by these absurd SHADES OF GREY.

Dude, obviously you didn't grow up during the 60s or 70s. The fad in movies until the late 60s was the hero always wins. Then came both the anti-hero, epitomized by Clint Eastwood's "man with no name" "spaghetti westerns" and killing off the heroes such as in "Hombre", "Easy Rider" and "Electra Glide in Blue".

That said, like most young people, you are blaming older people AKA those in power for your own actions. Those nasty ol' corporations wouldn't be selling Wonder Woman headbands, Batman masks and Star Wars lightsabers if there weren't millions of dipshits out there buying them. In essence, you are blaming drug dealers for selling crap without equally blaming those who buy it. If you have any Star Wars or other movie/comic book memorabilia, you're part of the problem that you are complaining about.

Dude, you can't be taken seriously as a mature adult if you blame others for your own actions.

Simply because a movie is about something does not mean it is propaganda for it.

I'm very much older than you think -

Ron Perlman superb acting perfomance as Hellboy was a character you could root for, along with his green reptillian frog fish sidekick. It's writing/ acting that make a movie not CGI.

You've reacted emotionally to my thread title without reading the pages of posts from others also objecting to the shoddy writing of Sci-Fi and Action films, but paid ZERO attention to the numerous examples of political agendas ...

    http://politicalforum.com/index.php...vii-is-war-propaganda.470369/#post-1068257988

When I read Benecio Del Toro had a role in the new ESCAPE FROM THE JEDI - timed for release for XMAS SHOPPERS, i realized Disney was clueless. Just like his NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (a complete dud) look alike Javier Bardem - cannot act his way out of a paper bag.

But maybe Vin Diesel or The Rock could be a formidable villian or monster suit kicking Batmans , the new stuck up Capt. Kirk, or twirpy shrimp Spidermans arse !

I love it when people try to read these deep messages into movies. Star Wars is not some thesis on the human condition, it is merely the fantasies of a young man growing up in a farming town in California. Star Wars is a mix of all of George Lucas's favorite shows, Saturday matinee serials, war movies (especially with dog fights), and samurai movies. The franchise is not a huge success because if follows the "hero's journey", it's a huge success because for $10 a person can forget their troubles for two hours and be immersed in another world where good conquers evil.

Also, any story where parsecs are used as a unit of time instead of distance and there is talk of a mystical energy field that allows one to perform magic, is not scifi, it is fantasy with lasers.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but let's take if for what it is. A fun popcorn movie to make our time on Earth a little more bearable.

Agreed. I've really enjoyed the SW movies along with the Star Trek movies and other SF movies. OTOH, some people take them waaaaaay to seriously. Basically, they are boys in man's clothes.

The obvious. parallels of Star Trek IV 'Undiscovered Country' ( both Klingon/ Soviet empires dying) and their enemy dialectics - the Klingons had a nuclear explosion (Chernobyl 1986 - duh) and then some Federation conspiracy plot to keep the Cold War afloat - the famous Capt. Kirk scene where he says, "Don't trust them, let them die," before the summit talks.

Sounds alot like the fake news plot when the mass media tried to sabotage relations between Trump-Putin meeting - so the Democrats, Clintonistas could revive the Cold War - looks like there was some political Deja Vu going on in Star Trek IV 'Undiscovered Country'.

    1) Anyone who uses the term "fake news" is either joking or an idiot uninformed.

    2) Modern human beings have been around for over 300,000 years. Modern thinking human beings for over 40,000 years. While tech has changed over the millennia, the basic behavior, desires and flaws of human beings has not.

    3) There are only seven basic plots to stories: overcoming the monster; rags to riches; the quest; voyage and return; comedy; tragedy; rebirth.

    4) While people can read almost anything into a story and while Hollywood, in the quest for money, try to make stories relevant to audiences for mass appeal, the bottom line is that this is entertainment for profit. No different than when Shakespeare was writing and staging plays at the Globe theater.
