The options are ridiculous. I use FB casually, largely to stay in touch with people I haven't seen in a while if I don't have their phone number. So not, "can't live without it" doesn't apply. But yes, I do use it.

I often go for three days or more without checking it but when i do get into Facebook I do use it to promote certain ideas to large groups of people.

I've never really Facebooked, don't have any pics on there or posts, think my age is 102 . I maintain the profile only to connect with some people who don't communicate in any other way

I use it to contact my sister sometimes, but otherwise I don't use Facebook. I still put "can't live without it" because that's my only option to contact some family members.

    Three thoughts on FB

Great way to stay in contact with friends and family. That's its real purpose and what it does best... politics aside.

When it comes to discussing politics on FB, you're free to do it. However, because youre under your real name and your profile pic is actually you... and because your Aunt Mary in Hoboken and everybody else on your friends list will read what you say... self-moderation is key. I rarely discuss politics on FB. (Although its clear which side I'm on) ;)

Thirdly, its a great place to stay in contact with forum buds who give up arguing politics. At least 12 of my FB friends are former politicos, some as far back as 2000 when we posted together on Yahoo boards. Love that part. ♡

I had an account many years ago. I deleted it. As far as I know, it is gone. In searches for my name, I have not found one that matches, so I guess it is gone.

Not only in my real name, etc... I also follow the governor, mayor, my congresswoman and senators. When I comment to an elected official, my post is marked CONSTITUENT. More power there than bitching behind a screen name on a political forum. ;)

I deleted my account when I saw they were sneaking ad content in disguised as regular posts. Given how bad they are about violating personal privacy and selling information that they gather, well, I'm all the more glad not to be on it today.

I certainly appreciate the facility it offers for staying in touch with people, but then we have to realize that it's hardly the only means at our disposal for doing so today. I also don't need to see silly pictures and read little blurbs or captioned images from, or have games or other junk recommended to me by family, friends and acquaintances. It's actually kind of weird and impersonal. I feel that it is actually potentially detrimental to personal relationships because of this, especially if it takes the place of more personal and direct communication. Suddenly people I should be talking to are like every other social media personality I encounter.

Tolerated the nonsense for about 7 years. Logged off about 6 months ago, and permanently deleted it yesterday.

I was cajoled into signing up by an old girlfriend who thought it would be fun to make plans with everyone flying in for our 30th high school reunion. that was in 2009.

Was fun-ish for a while, but then it became really intrusive..... and I'm the type who feels really anxious and guilty about screening calls. Friend requests....do I know you? who are you?! Freaking birthdays, theirs and mine. omg, the dread!

It's liberating....and, as I was sometimes unable to resist sharing my delightfully unifying and uplifting commentary on current political events, probably much better for business.

So, this is what I'll never get. FB is a public platform. It is specifically designed to be a public web platform. And folks thought that they had privacy? Why? In 2009, FB said, publicly, that they would "never sell user data". Funny. If FB wasn't "selling" user data, then they were surely selling the metadata, and the demographics of their users. How else does this mythical monetization then happen without it?

Think about it. FB is just a lever into your personal space, designed to allow others to surreptitiously gain a view of your personal lives that you would have never allowed without the "convenience" they offered.

I hear ya... sometimes I'm amazed at what people post. Of course its the same way here... if somebody wants to track you down and give you grief, its possible. Never believe you're truly anonymous anyplace on the 'net. ;)

Keep it for contacting family and friends. My personal info was never on there, not my birthday, where I work, or where I live.

Anyone who actually thought their info was private at anytime, regardless of assurances, would likely buy a bridge......

I use it to spy on my "friends", family and associates. Whenever I am a their homes, I somehow get access to their computers and change their settings so that I can see everything they post. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
