I personally feel the world needs the UN despite it's shortcomings. It's the last hope in diplomacy and preventing wars as well as it helps in managing or solving commonly shared problems humanity as a whole has such as poverty.

I do not believe nationalism to be the solution to all problems. This thread and poll is a response to Brexit, fear of Syrian refugees and some Americans thinking it's a great idea to pull out of UN membership.

I would never presume to tell other countries how to run their affairs. However, when more than one country has a mutual shared problem, it is in their interest to cooperate and help find common solutions. If I you cannot be reached by your shared humanity, think about your own interests in international cooperation. If you want to stop refugees and illegal immigrants from flooding your country, it would be in your interest if your country (I'm pointing to all developed countries here) lend a helping hand in stopping the crisis in those other countries. You should contribute in bringing peace (diplomatically) to Syria, restoration of the natural environment from deforestation in Haiti and bring job opportunities in Mexico.

Here is one that affects my country personally; a couple of years ago there were massive forest fires in Indonesia. The haze spilled over into Malaysia and Singapore. I don't know if they helped, but the neighboring countries had an interest in having us solve our problems because it affected their well being as well. They too wanted clean air to breath. I wouldn't be surprised if Malaysia sent over firefighters to aid in putting out the fires.

Finally, I am against foreign military interventions UNLESS there is an agreement by all nations than action must be taken to stop genocide.

I have no problem with the UN as a place for countries to come together and conduct diplomacy. Though I do not always agree with the positions taken by all of their committees. In the end the world is a bit safe for having them and it gives a voice even to the tiniest of nations on the world stage.

It's a place where ambassadors convene to exchange national policies and confer them with the other countries.
    I approve of the concept.

These days, telephones and internet make this a bit irrelevant.
    I wouldn't miss it.

Just like I do with the United States government, I support the mission and the existence of the U.N. without that equaling approval of every action they take.

    The First "No" here.

    With so many sh*thole nations
you know those nations that do nothing for their own people let alone the world,
the U.N. is paralyzed from the lofty ideals that created it.

The benevolent functions may be managed by smaller, regional groups.

Second Choice, A New Shiny 21st Century U.N. Headquarters somewhere else.
Some Third World Nation would be nice.
Maybe one of those Sub Sahara African nations where they speak French.
The host nation having natives that speak one of the U.N. official languages.
    Sorry Brazil.

No I do not support them.

People think that if there were no UN that nations wouldn't be able to come together and work together but we did that for centuries before the UN existed.

All the UN does is create international rules that bind other nations. One nation should not be able to veto our nation when we decide to do something.

We should be able to forge our own alliances as we see fit.

There is not a single thing the UN does that we couldn't do on our own.

At one point, states of the United States decided to step up and force other states from practicing slavery, preserving the union in the process.

I'm waiting until countries in the United Nations trust war powers to the Security General and systematically eliminate crimes against humanity.

    Edit: And enforce true republican-democracy

The UN would be a better group if no one had a veto, and all countries had an equal say.

The UN is fine. I just don't want the US to be a member. We should never accept anything that reduces our national sovreignty.

HEll no. MURICA should be allowed to do as it pleases, and they get in the way. So does that pesky World Court. We don't want to answer for anything. We are large and in charge.

GLOBALISTS are BAD, fascist MURICANS good.

I agree. The NATO mission ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. There's entirely no need for it now.

The UN is fine, as you stated and I too agree that there's no need for us in it.

I never supported the UN. It is just a place where countries can spout off against others. For the longest time it was just a place for anti-U.S. rhetoric by the Eastern Block and non-aligned nations. I have always been in favor of a total U.S. withdrawal from it. If other countries want the UN to continue, move it to Switzerland or some other country.

Sorry you feel that way. What I would say to that is many countries have the idea and often rightly so, that the US only works unilaterally for their own interests instead of multilaterally of common interests. There are exceptional cases of course, but not many.
