The recent cases of Ebola in the US motivated the drug makers to finally develop a vaccine for the Ebola virus. But since there hasn't been any cases here in the last month I wonder if they will continue to push it as a priority.

"Researchers in the US say they are a step closer to developing an Ebola vaccine, with a Phase 1 trial showing promising results, but it will be months at the earliest before it can be used in the field.
The news comes amid the worst ever outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever, which has killed nearly 5,700 people in West Africa, most of them in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Pharmaceutical companies and health agencies are scrambling to fast-track experimental drugs and vaccines that could help fight the deadly disease.
In the first phase of testing, all 20 healthy adults injected with a higher or lower dose of the vaccine developed antibodies needed to fight Ebola, said the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which conducted the study.
Results were published on Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine."

This is good news if it pans out and the vaccine is effective. Even so I wonder how many people in the Ebola area will resist getting vaccinated.

Customizable Vaccine Could Fight Numerous Diseases
August 18, 2016 - As the Zika virus spreads through the Americas and into the United States, there's been a scramble to develop a vaccine against it. Some of those vaccines are now entering clinical trials.

Omar Kahn, a chemical engineer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, hopes his customizable vaccine will soon follow. The vaccine uses messenger RNA, a genetic material that researchers program to fight any disease-causing organism by stimulating an amplified immune response in the body. The messenger RNA is bound to a nanoparticle that delivers it into cells. "So things like, for example, Zika or the recent Ebola outbreak, we can rapidly respond to that within seven days, Khan said. So when there is an extraordinary need and you need something that is safe, then we have the ability to make that happen."

Customizable Vaccine Could Fight Numerous Diseases

It's an idea that has been around for a long time. However, getting the vaccine into cells has been a challenge, so MIT researchers designed it to be as small as the virus it's targeting. The scientists developed and tested vaccines against Ebola and H1N1 flu that proved 100 percent effective in lab mice in a study published in July in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Since that study, according to Kahn, the researchers have tested an RNA vaccine for Zika in mice and have had similarly successful results. "So, we are definitely interested to see if these vaccines could be used to treat people with cancer, or even for patients that may be at risk for specific cancers, said Daniel Anderson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Red Cross: Safe Burial Practices Helped Prevent Spread of Ebola in West Africa
June 23, 2017 — A new study by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says that safe burial practices may have helped prevent the transmission of thousands of cases of Ebola during the epidemic in West Africa between 2013 and 2016.

More than 11,300 people died from Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea before the epidemic was stopped in those countries in 2016. Ebola is highly contagious and spread by direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids. Symptoms include a sudden fever, aching muscles, diarrhea and vomiting.

Red Cross study

A co-author of the Red Cross Federation study, Amanda McClelland, says the traditional burial practice of washing and touching the dead was a major mode of transmission of Ebola during the outbreak in all three countries. While isolating patients is key to preventing the spread of the disease, she says early burial is crucial to keeping Ebola in check. “They can really produce super-spreading events where we get very large chains of transmission well beyond what a live case would cause in the community,” she said. “So, the infectiousness of the bodies increases. The virus is at its peak when a person dies. So, we see a much higher transmission from a body than we do from a live person.”

McClelland says the Red Cross had to change its approach in dealing with communities that adhered to traditional burial practices. Aid workers stopped talking about management of the remains and instead spoke about safe and dignified burials, she said.

Local volunteers

Burial teams made up entirely of local volunteers, gained the trust of the communities, which was critical to success, she said. In all, the teams provided more than 47,000 safe burials, accounting for more than 50 percent of all burials in the three countries during the outbreak. This action, McClelland said, may have prevented more than 10,000 people from becoming infected with the virus, which is named for the Congolese river near where it was first identified in 1976.
