so what would you suggest for school kids instead of Run, Hide, Fight? I'm a pro-gun rights and self defense person, but it makes sense to run, hide, fight in that order, if you are unarmed, that is.

 

It's in the article. Instead of simply hiding, be proactive. You have a room full of young, able bodies and you have some options. Send kids out of a window to run away, depending on the location of the gun shots. Barricade doors with a desk. Get your largest and most able bodied students ready to rush the door if somebody tries to enter armed with whatever they can find. Five high school students running at a door using a student desk with feet sticking out as a shield might take out a gunman as he enters if you cannot barricade the door. Each situation is different and we should use common sense and whatever resources we have. Don't just hide in the dark. Prepare.

The nation of Japan, however, does have to worry about someone committing suicide with a toxic gas constructed from bleach and ammonia, which is capable of killing an entire apartment complex.

A 14-year-old Japanese girl killed herself by mixing laundry detergent with cleanser, releasing fumes that also sickened 90 people in her apartment house, police said Thursday as they grappled with a spate of similar suicides.

None of the sickened neighbors in Konan, southern Japan, were severely ill, although about 10 were hospitalized, authorities said. The deadly hydrogen sulfide gas escaped from the girl's bathroom window and entered neighboring apartments.

The girl's suicide Wednesday night was part of an expanding string of similar deaths that experts say have been encouraged by Internet suicide sites since last summer.

TOKYO (AP) — Some 350 people evacuated their homes in northern Japan to escape poisonous fumes released Thursday by a neighbor who killed himself by mixing detergent and other chemicals — the latest in a series of such suicides.

The panic in Otaru came just hours after national police urged Internet providers to crack down on websites spurring a wave of detergent-related suicides that have reported killed 50 people in the past month.

The rash of such suicides in Japan — which already has one of the world's highest suicide rates — has triggered widespread concern because the powerful fumes can seriously harm bystanders and rescuers.

In Otaru, on the northern island of Hokkaido, a 24-year-old man mixed the chemicals in his house after midnight. He died, and the gas — hydrogen sulfide — escaped his home, and neighbors were alerted by the smell, a Hokkaido police official said.

The man's 58-year-old mother, who was apparently overcome by the fumes, was found unconscious nearby and was taken to hospital. Police said she was recovering.

A total of about 350 neighbors fled to a nearby school playground for about two hours, until the fumes dispersed, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing department protocol.

Just last week, at least 90 people were sickened by fumes in southwestern Japan after a teenage girl killed herself by mixing laundry detergent with cleanser in her apartment house.

Rather than having having to worry about school shootings, children in the nation of Japan must instead worry about their neighbors poisoning them while they sleep.

 

If Japan is your dream country, go. No body here is likely to drink your coolaid.

Sending kids out the window is running--i.e. the first suggestion.

Part of hide (in the full DHS training) is to barricade yourself--i.e the second suggestion.

Having the able-bodied kids attack is fight--i.e. the third suggestion.

I had to go through active shooter training at my workplace. Nowhere did we learn or did they teach to just huddle down in the dark. It was all about thinking about the situation, and figuring out the best thing to do at that time--i.e. using common sense and resources.

We had active shooter training at my Fortune 50 company, too. In the video we watched, one scenario was an active shooter approaching a conference room. The inhabitants formed a plan to attack the shooter if he entered, with some to block the door or hiding nearby to physically attack the shooter with others further back armed with whatever missile weapons they could improvise. One woman held a potted plant to throw at the shooter.

The next week, the company removed all of the potted plants from our office.

 

Well, they left us our scissors......
