One of my nephews started at McDonalds in high school at 16, stayed there until college. After he got his feet on the fast track he's never made less than $200,000. Says Micky D taught him way more than college. Micky D is a good start if you're smart.

I did that exercise when I went to school.
Takes you 8 years to pass the guy with no degree. Not a bad investment. :)

It's not a good place to land after spending several years and lots of money getting a degree

With a Phd. diploma or an honorable discharge certificate you can get an Egg McMuffin for, what is it, $3.45 I think.

As clearly stated, employees in the public sector get pay bumps in lockstep the more "degrees" they obtain. That is not standard practice in the private sector, and for good reason.

If it were anything other than a propaganda narrative, the "classification" would be "degreed," not "educated."

The Trumpers seem to think that education is a waste because of stock bullshit stories about an art major who can't get a job.

    *LOL*

Education is never a waste. Numerous types of degrees are though, and the two have little to do with each other.

I am a self employed bricklayer with a tenth grade education. I have been self employed since 1985. Have no academic credentials, training certifications or professional licenses. What I do have is thirty five years of tactical experience. The architects know what's wanted and the engineers know why, but you're always going to need someone like me to do it.

We all sell the same three things: know-how, can-do and have-done. Even though know-how is the most important component, it is actually the least valuable. After all, without can-do, know-how is worthless. The most valuable is have-done. When it comes to those situations in which there is only one opportunity to get it right and that's it, such as in historic restoration or when it's literally in stone, have-done pays a premium.

My lack of education has not prevented those with educations from calling upon me for my expert testimony. Because of the nature of my business, I have become an expert at diagnosing masonry problems, prescribing cost effective repairs, restoration or replacements and implementing them. No one calls me until something goes wrong or they want something so esoteric that it's a problem. There are not many masons who can read and understand engineering reports and legal depositions, write reports on their findings and present well in courtroom testimony.

To paraphrase "Forest Gump", educated is as educated does. One of the things that I think that I would have a problem with at university is my need to understand what I know. Understanding is knowing what to do with what is known. University does not seem to be conducive to understanding. I could never digest, index and fit into the whole that much information in that little time. Furthermore, I have an emotional aversion to intellectual regurgitation. I just can't bring myself to do it, not for the grade, not to make a buck. Perhaps my unwillingness to go along to get along itself leaves me unemployable. If so, I thank God it did. There's no job in the world for a man like me that could have paid off the way my "non-educated [sic]" option has.

    No.

Do educated people make you angry? Why?
    True.

Education may or may not be a waste of time. it depends on the education and the person.

The point is that education is a poor indicator of intelligence. Some of the smartest people I know did not go to college and some of the most ignorant people I know have advanced degrees.

It's not a "poor indicator" of intelligence. That's your own conclusion based upon well-educated people you believe are ignorant, and uneducated people you believe are intelligent. Your musing isn't exactly an empirical study. The fact remains that well-educated people are generally more intelligent:

The next time you're puzzled about the Constitution, you should call the nearest line cook.

Face it; people trained or educated in a specialty are going to know more about the subject than you are.

I have a similar background in my profession and it gets funny when I show up at a big pre construction meeting and I give my concerns to certain aspects of my part of the project and get shut down because of "who am I"? When I get called up to execute my part of the project and prove what I tried to help with in the beginning and then big money has to be spent to correct what I tried to correct at the meeting. I laugh but I have earned some respect over the years.

By your measure Lincoln was not intelligent because he only had one year of formal education.

You may be able to make a lot of money without an education. Tougher to become a doctor of medicine without one. Also, there is a value to a "liberal education" that goes beyond learning how to do a job, that lies - IMO - in the continuity of human knowledge and how human beings have progressed through history. Of course, with sufficient intelligence, anyone is capable of learning these things without a "formal education" and through self-education, but self-education also requires some understanding of logical thinking and why education is not something that is just randomly acquired.

Not sure what your point was, but mine was that it takes many skills to make this life work. An advanced education is only part of it. I can see a doctor just about any time I want to. It is nearly impossible to find a plumber or electrician.

"generally" does not make it a good indication of intelligence. More to the point, a lack of education does not mean someone is ignorant or stupid.
