This may be the future of the Republican Party... Election 2022: JD Vance wins Ohio's GOP Senate primary COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — “Hillbilly Elegy” author JD Vance won Ohio’s contentious and hyper-competitive GOP Senate primary on Tuesday, buoyed by Donald Trump’s endorsement in a race that was an early test of the former president’s hold on his party as the midterm season kicks into high gear. A onetime staunch critic of Trump whose 2016 memoir about his Appalachian childhood lifted him to fame, Vance spent much of the campaign behind in the polls. But a late-stage endorsement from Trump pushed him to frontrunner status and the two men downplayed Vance's past scathing criticism of the former president, with Vance saying he was wrong. In accepting the GOP nomination, Vance struck a unifying tone, complimenting his rivals — including silencing boos for his most bitter opponent, former state Treasurer Josh Mandel — and pledging to appeal to the state's many moderates headed into November after an exceptionally bitter campaign that, at one point, saw two candidates nearly come to blows on a debate stage Much of the media coverage is about Trump's endorsement, but I personally think there is a lot less there than meets the eye. Trump's endorsement didn't come until Vance started going up in the polls. He had a very good debate (or his opponents had a bad one) and I think his victory is due less to Trump and more to his message, which is a genuine America First populist message. This should be the future GOP.
Having to lick Trump's boot isn't a good sign, especially after the guy had legitimate criticisms of the man. Hopefully we the GOP can find something to stand for other than worshipping a man who tried to overthrow our elections. It's a shame that this is not only the mainstream but, for many, a requirement.
It all means nothing if he cannot win the general election. If he loses the dems gain that senate seat. Republicans have held that seat since 1999. Tim Ryan has a pretty liberal voting record as a congressman. His lifetime rating from ACU is 10%. He reminds me a bit of Tim Kaine of Virginia or Sherrod Brown from that same state. He seems like a sensible moderate white guy but is not moderate at all. If Ryan is able to push the charade, lie that he is a sensible moderate republicans could lose that seat.
Tim Ryan going right after Trump populist message and voters with this ad. Ryan argues that Vance is the rich elitist who left Ohio to be a silicon valley investor. You would think Ryan was the republican and Vance the lib democrat. Again Ryan's voting record is solidly liberal. He votes conservative just 10% of the time. https://twitter.com/i/status/1521665423430893568
