The Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has bought a Cypriot passport under a controversial scheme that allows rich investors to acquire citizenship and visa-free access to the European Union, the Guardian can reveal.

Deripaska, an aluminium magnate with connections to Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort, is one of hundreds of wealthy individuals who have applied for Cypriot nationality. His application was approved last year.

The revelations will revive concern about oligarchs with Kremlin connections buying EU passports. Large numbers of the Russian and Ukrainian elite featured last year in a list of hundreds of people granted Cypriot citizenship over the past four years.

The island also offered citizenship to Viktor Vekselberg, a major shareholder in the Bank of Cyprus, the country’s biggest bank, documents show. Vekselberg appears to have turned the offer down. His spokesman said he only had Russian citizenship.

Deripaska and Vekselberg appeared on another list issued by the US Treasury in January of oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin. Deripaska has denied claims that he served as a back channel between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign, as an investigation by the special counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion continues.

The Cypriot documents seen by the Guardian and the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) show that Deripaska’s first attempt to become a Cypriot citizen was unsuccessful.

Cyprus has been accused of failing to vet passport candidates vigorously enough, heightening concerns in EU circles about people being able to buy EU citizenship. On this occasion, however, Deripaska was asked to resubmit his case because of a preliminary inquiry into his affairs in Belgium. The inquiry was subsequently dropped in 2016.

Cyprus’s council of ministers sent Deripaska’s case back to the island’s interior ministry, the Cypriot documents say, asking it to investigate further. The oligarch’s naturalisation bid had to be re-examined before a final decision could be made.

Actually title to the thread would be "Manafort's Boss bought Cyprus Passport" but rules are rules. We all should be appreciated efforts put by these dark figures of Moscow to keep Trump at WH, because who knows these crazies could buy out some people in Kremlin to press that red button to turn the whole world into fckin hell.

Aluminum guy, Gas guy, Steel guy, Oil guy, Mineral guy, all pitching in for Putin who just threatened the West with some psychopathic nuke he alleges being in possession of...
    No good...

"Leaked documents show that the Cypriot “golden visa” scheme remains a lucrative source of revenue for the island, generating at least €4.8bn (£4.3bn). Cyprus has given citizenship to 1,685 “foreign investors” since 2008 – many from the former Soviet Union, and from China, Iran and Saudi Arabia – and 1,651 members of their families."

Damn Rums have long been undermining the security of EU by agitating Turks for so long. Turks are busy with Syria but soon their attention will be back on their "donme" asses... And now they sell their worthless passports to the agents of the foes of EU like Mullahs, PRC, Suud and Tsar's guys... Passport of a country represents the "honor" of the land. That's why that land is called "motherland"... The Rums (fake Greeks) sell their mothers to the highest bidders...

    No cool...

Currently the oligarchs have only been listed not sanctioned, but if they are eventually individually sanctioned it should not matter what passport they hold, they'll need a new identity...probably why Vekselberg turned it down.

This is a non-issue. There are several ways to obtain the nationality of another country legally. You don't need to be wealthy or to "purchase" it and it takes on an average from 3 to 5 years ........ LEGALLY.

So? What's that got to do with the quote you just made there ????

    You quoted this:

    "
EU citizenship for sale as Russian oligarch buys Cypriot passport
    "

It doesn't say anything about being rich to be able to purchase citizenship. It just says he bought EU citizenship from an EU member state. That's all...

Whatcha been high on bruh ?

The US has a similar scheme, the "investor's visa", and it doesn't take a large amount. The Cypriot arrangement is apparently a decade old, but doesn't even require one set up a business, simply buying some real estate is enough, in the US the purchase of property helps, but they are looking for the generation of income and employment. Most countries have similar deals.

You can only think it is interesting if you don't know that it is easy to get new nationality. So what?
    Exactly.

I think Russia is just giving them away, but I'm not sure. I know that Gerard Depardieu and what's that terrible karate/actor's name? They both got Russian citizenship. Depardieu got it because he thinks taxes are too high in France for actors and I think the american guy got it because he has no talent and was looking for some PR.

What makes this guy different than many of Putin's oligarchs is some of his "special ops staff" is mainly responsible for the notorious Russian election meddling. His firm is also supporting Kremlin's troll factory's servers. His background can be detailed but I'll just leave it for now...

    Good job jiji...

Hypocrites! On one hand they vilify the EU....then proceed to obtain citizenship. You don't find a fussy slop pail I suppose.

It's for free passage to all EU members including prominent western European ones which pose the gravest threat to Russian westward expansion... Get your oligarchs investing in those countries to have certain level of influence in time, you start buying politicians of those countries, spreading corruption and many other things to compromise general antiRussian perspective. EU passport not only means visa free travel but easy work permits and residency as well.. And it's not limited with Russians. Iranians buying EU citizenship too. The West is under ATTACK!

Wtf your asking that poster what they high on? What is your opinion smoking itself?

The OP is about an Oligarch we assume wealthy purchasing a passport. IE citizenship to another country.

There is no law against multiple citizenships I know of provided the host country has its own legal processes in place to do so to facilitate wealthy or influential people obtaining access. It appears Cyprus does, the US does and frankly you could prob buy citizenship to nearly any country on earth if you greased the right palms or do enough business there.

Wtf is your point to the OP? As if the uber powerful Russian oligarchs give two fks about Manafort haha. Crooked business guy?

Get a grip on reality before you start snapping at people claiming they using narcotics.

No one cares about the OP. It's just a Russia bashing thread haha. Derp

The Turkish lobby is working overtime I notice.

Here's a bit of reality Goody. Erdogan better think twice before the 40,000 thousand troops he has stationed on Cyprus start massacring the rest of the Island. Russia is not his former ally Germany which excuses everything he does. Moscow has high connections with Cyprus, and an obligation to its Christian inhabitants, so it's not something Putin will take lightly.

Tell the sultan with his messianic illusions to start pulling his head out of the ground, and to get back into the dustbin of history where he belongs, before he fulfills prophecies and starts WWIII.

Oh I knew what the OP was up too. Hah. Turkey is way way getting to big for its britches lately.

Erdogans arrogance isn't matched by either his militaries skill or advancement. They do have some very skilled special ops groups.

That fool came to my country and watched while his security team beat up Turkish/ American citizens on our land? He thought it was funny. Well it was a grievous error.

No one is allowed to hurt Americans but ourselves haha. Or anyone else on our soil.

It was very disrespectful and shows he thinks he can do whatever he wants where ever it is.

Anytime there is any kind of potential conflict between the US and Turkey just because of that the American people will be like.. Well you remember when...

NATO Ally my ass. Americans don't even like NATO. Or at the very best are ambivalent.

I don't think Turkey is gonna do squat in Cyprus. Zip. They too busy getting their asses kicked in Syria by Kurds.

Yesterday using tunnels to ambush them from behind. :chainsaw:

The problem with Cyprus and Greece is the large expanse of territorial waters with its oil and gas, something Turkey feels it's entitled to when it isn't according to the Lausanne Treaty. Eni the Italian firm went to search for gas in Cyprus and when they went there, so did the Turkish warships. The Italians didn't combat the Turks, probably under orders from Nato to the chagrin of the Italian people.

Now Turkey has started its own illegal search for oil in Cypriot waters. But Cyprus is not the only place it's laying claim to, they want 16 Greek islands as well. Greece is doing everything to avoid war, but the
Defense Ministry is preparing for it in high level talks.

Turkey makes a habit of false flag attacks whenever it needs an excuse, and today they grabbed two Greek soldiers who they accused as spies. They were following tracks in the snow who they assumed belonged to illegals. It's problematic to the Greek government because the soldiers said there was no sign designating it as being Turkish territory, which means it's probably a deliberate provocation rather than a simple mistake. Besides, what spy would sneak into an area when there is snow on the ground?
