okay as an Aussie living north of the Tropic of Capricorn I am like “What? That is not hot!” But this is Europe and they do not know how to cope with high temperatures so I do get it. Bad news all around and if climate predictions are right this could get waaay more common

Keep cool everyone and look after yourselves!

It's not just you. I'm in Chicago (USA - Midwest) and have online friends in the UK, Italy, Holland and other parts of the US. ALL of us are experiencing 100 degrees F temperatures.

Here are some tips and tricks I learned from my grandparents (not well-off so they had all kinds of strategies to combat the heat (and cold):

    * Fill the bathtub with water. It will evaporate and bring down the over temperature inside.
    * Alternatively, fill a large bucket with water. Same effect, just needs to be redone more often.
    * Get all the blankets and throws from off-season and use a push pin to cover the windows. This will help the fan(s) and A/C work less in trying to keep the temp. down.
    * Soak your top in cold water and put it back on. The wetness will cool the body.
    * Pin your hair up so it's not draping over the shoulders. Place a set of keys or something else that is cool on the back of the neck. Small ice blocks are sold at Dollar Tree (don't know if you have those there).

    * Don't forget your pets. Freeze some water in their bowl so they can get a cool, refreshing drink in the high temps.
    * Give them showers or baths in cool water to help counter their fur which keeps them warm.

    Hope this helps someone.

Traditionally, many of the impacted areas did not need AC, so they've never installed it.

Train tracks aren't use to the heat in Europe? What's with them reporting on train tracks buckling?

Exterior sun shades help a lot. Indoor shades absorb heat inside the house but shades outside keep the sun for heating the house. It also allows you to keep the sun off your walls making your house more efficient. It also makes opening windows to cool off the house while blocking the sun possible.

Many don’t have AC as their homes are built to keep warm

The unusually high temperatures are only expected to last 2 or 3 days.

The Southern European way of life is designed to cope with high températures.
This includes starting early and working late with hours off in the middle of the day.
This of course sets meal times differently ...the Spanish eat dinner very late for example.
There are lots of trees in towns planted around small paved areas which offer shade.
Buildings are placed close together in narrow lanes, going up and not horizontally so you can walk through cool shade. We have lots of fountains too.
We open shutters early and close them when the sun comes round. Leave à gap to allow air to pass.
I am Lucky and can find something to do quietly at home and wait it out. It is time there were laws banning working when températures reach à certain level. I heard of à crâne driver working in a cab where the température reached over 50 C. It should be illegal.

Well, let's just say I doubt any of the Muslim migrants are going to die.

You said one particular culture had a particular way of coping. I just pointed out that another culture probably has an even better way.

many die of dehydration, drink a full glass of water before leaving the house and take a bottle with you, that is what I would do

    dehydration can be serious

But the culture mentioned was specifically Southern European. Muslim people live in the southern European culture . Why would they be a spécial case?

Gee, maybe my snipping someone else's post had nothing to do with it.

I just want to point out this is NOT actually a big issue, compared to other issues the media intentionally ignores.

Wet a towel and cover yourself with it with it whilst lying under a fan (clothes optional) I have even used the old wet thin towel in front of fan with the end in the water trough like a “Coolgardie safe”

As an Australian, I'm sure you could give the English tips on how to survive through a heat wave.

Heat is pretty normal in Australia, isn't it?
