Rally officially starts at 11am and lasts till noon.

Folks have been lining up to get into Capitol Square since dawn.

WWBT NBC 12 in Richmond has been covering events downtown since they went on the air this morning - they're running live updates at www.nbc12.com

I hope and expect all will go well, although the traffic downtown is going to be a freakin' nightmare. Broad, Marshall and Main Streets around the Capitol are going to be closed so it's going to be a cluster-foxtrot. So will parking.

This is correct. I don't know any serious supporter of the Second Amendment who thinks that, for example, if a group of Americans would like to construct their own nuclear weapon, or open a nerve-gas production line in their garage, that they should be allowed to. (Okay -- I admit that for me, by defintion, if you support either of those things you're not serious. Or not sane.So it's a tautology.) Nor do they think that convicted felons, serving time, should be allowed to 'bear arms' in their cells.

It's a question of where to draw the boundaries. The current fight is basically over whether to draw the boundaries at weapons for home- and other defense -- basically handguns and shotguns, plus deer rifles for hunting -- or to include weapons of war, like the AR15.

Most of us on the Right want to include weapons of war like the AR15 and similar rifles.

If people on the gun-control side were absolutely consistent, they would want to ban all semi-automatic weapons -- handguns and long arms, regardless of magazine/clip capacity -- and restrict us to revolvers and bolt-action rifles and pump-action shotguns. These would be totally adequate for self-defense and hunting -- indeed, preferable for these purposes.

That's me... but I understand it's likely an iterative process....

And that's the best brief definition of the issue I've seen..

Even better would be to read the novel on which that film is based, The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara. It deals sympathetically with both sides, and shows the tragedy of honorable men both fighting for what they believe in.

It's not mentioned in the novel, but its hero, Col. Joshua Chamberlain, was the principal in a very moving incident at the end of the war. His 20th Maine regiment held the vital Union left flank at Gettysburg against repeated Confederate charges until it finally ran out of ammunition -- at which point Chamberlain ordered a bayonet charge into Southern ranks, which dispersed them. He was chosen to accept Lee's surrender. Wiki:
What a contrast Chamberlain -- a college professor -- was, to the scum who tear down Confederate statues today!

Read it... good read... also read a lot of war books by his son Jeff, which are mostly pretty good reads...

    https://jeffshaara.com/p/books

I've walked the actual site of the 20th Maine stand on Little Round Top a half dozen times... very special place.

I wonder how a college professor would feel about Confederate soldier statues in non military park locations, but I digress...

LOL... reading that entire book is only slightly more time consuming than watching the full 'Gettysburg'

The proposed laws amount to infringement, which is unconstitutional. That other unconstitutional laws already exist, is irrelevant. The second amendment doesn't authorize anything, it is supposed to protect your inalienable right to keep and bear arms from government infringement.

The real tragedy is that they believed owning other men was honorable.
A bit of self-reflection would have spared a lot of lives.

actually if they were really serious, they could start and end with semi auto handguns and go hard and heavy where the actual violence occurs. Unfortunate and tragic events like mass shootings, specifically those that were perpetrated with long guns are a tiny % of the overall problem related to gun violence and for some (cough) reason those on the left feel that they need to focus on that segment of the problem instead of the much larger issue(s).

Be careful with the term "weapon of war", Doug. My Remington Model 870 pump-action shotgun is closer to an actual weapon of war than your typical civilian-use AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

The rally has officially begun (11am to noon) and there have been no reports of violence or arrests. Most of the crowd has gathered in the streets immediately adjacent to the capitol grounds.

Looks like all the people who were predicting and/or hoping for violence are going to be greatly disappointed...

Definitely a huge crowd. The biggest I've ever seen on Lobby Day.

I'm glad everything is going smoothly as I expected...

As one predicting violence (by the establishment), none will be happier than me to be proven wrong!

In a sense modern liberals want to own other men for several months a year, i.e., take the product of their labor for several months each year and give it away to buy votes.
