Facebook Used People’s Data to Favor Certain Partners and Punish Rivals, Documents Show https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/...aking-news&nlid=55065696ing-news&ref=headline The downsides of social media are emerging ..
Social Media is going to go down in history as one of the worst social experiments of all time Human Beings are not mature enough to handle this kind of thing and it has ruined god knows how many lives. Personally, I am curious to see what the long term effects are in 20-30 years
The real question is "why are people still on the platform?" I've never used FB or twitter or snapchat, etc....and believe me, I'm not missing anything. In fact, I'm probably much happier for having never touched it.
Oh hell yes, The value of data goes back to mail order. There are companies that made great fortunes on their carefully kept mailing lists alone.
I'm on Facebook, but not as me. I cannot understand anyone sacrificing their anonymity even for fairly substantial profit, let alone none.. I've never understood twitter. Were I Zuckerberg I'd have long since taken a couple billions out of petty cash and bought a whorehouse in Vegas, which would then be my home forever. No computers allowed..
It was always a strange idea to me and I was right there in the prime of it. 2004 was my junior year in College and it was all the rage. This was a time when I think the first camera flash phone came out which we thought was awesome in 'da clubz'! Sitting in the library a friend of mine kept bugging me about how great it was and ended up signing me up right there. I actually still had the same password she set until I deleted it a couple years ago..... But posting everything you are doing to everyone in the world? WTF? How narcissistic are you? Would make a bet that I made less than 100 postings in the 10-12 years I had my account, although it was fun finding out what old friends were doing I will admit. But now? It is nothing but a fringe partisan echo chamber depending on which group of friends you have. Not to mention a tracking device for anyone looking to get information on you, I have used it dozens of times to "research" women's past, hiring an employee, researching a company and plenty of other areas. I would rather people get an impression of the 36 YO me of today, not a random telling of pictures from the last decade of my life.
Yeah, that's about the only use I ever had for FB. I'd look up people I knew years ago but frankly I never really wanted to contact them. I use it now mostly for keeping up with local police scanner reports. TBH, I thought it would be exhausting constantly putting up information about what I'm up to on ANY social media. I have better things to do.
It's a complete train wreck. Only about 5% of users have the maturity to consistently behave like adults on the site, and it's destroyed countless millions of relationships as people reveal how vicious, petty and ignorant they are. Politics in particular are utter poison.
Yup - I cannot figure out why the weirdo/sociopath Zuckerberg hasn't gotten out of Dodge... But remember that Facebook began as a means of trashing women who Zuckerberg felt were outside his pay scale back at Harvard, so he's always been kind of a sick worm. WADR
Exactly this for me as well. It was fun to look them up, but after a decade I maybe contacted a handful and never met a single one. I have a great group of friends so I didnt need it, but perhaps people actually created great physical relationships from it? From what I hear I doubt it, but maybe.... I ended up having a single client somehow able to see my profile back in .... I think it was 2016. While I didn't have many posts, I was tagged in pictures constantly going back from where my friend signed me up in 2005. Let's just say that my client who was able to see 23 YO me got a very different impression from the 36 YO reputation I have worked hard to build. Deleted minutes later ....
It is probably a "social" factor. Humans do have a psycho-social NEED to share about themselves. They are not naturally inclined to isolate. Platforms like Facebook........offer that. Humans like to share their options, and life experiences. Such a platform can give people a sense f belonging. Rebellious folks would be inclined to say things that they might not say in their normal lives..........or they would
You people are like a bunch of 100 year olds here. In Facebook you have a lot of privacy options - I set mine to such a level that if you are not in my friends list you can’t see anything, even my friends. The only thing you’ll see is my name and the profile picture. Also, no one can tag me without my authorization - if I don’t authorize the tag drops off. In my friends list I always have only people that I actually know and met. Some overly political friends and relatives are being put on ignore in the live feed, so that when I log in the news feed is interesting and you see what’s going on with people that you actually know.
I signed into Facebook the other day and got invites to a Christmas party from last year. I don't trust Facebook so I don't go on there much.
I recently read an article that social media causes people extreme anxiety and can lead to depression. And maybe its simplistic but everytime I hear about someone getting "bullied" on social media...all I can help but think is "uh, well just get off of social media". I can't believe its that hard to do.
I signed up to Farcebook about a month ago and logged on once. The next time I tried to log on it wanted my mobile number. I contacted Farcebook 'customer service' and explained that I only give my number to people who I don't mind calling me, and Farcebook isn't one of them. Customer service then said "It's so that we can positively identify you" !!!!
I used Facebook as a way to keep in touch with extended family and friends. It was great for sharing pictures. It turned into something else over the years though and has become highly politicized. I don't use it anymore and I see it going away in the near future. If I owned stock in it I'd sell. My family and friends now use Hangouts. It's what Facebook used to be except way more private.
Farcebook (great name!) is ALL about mining data & the retention/sale thereof. That is ALL they are about. A massively corrupt corporate entity happy to see the Constitution burned with the support of closet conservative cheerleaders.
