I never studied Italian and have only been able to learn some by listening to the language alot. So, I am not at all to be regarded as an expert on the field in any case at all. Not to brag or anything, but my sense of language is quite good and if we break up the word to do an etmylogical analysis; the suffix -ino of course indicates something "small or little" and the prefix pani is of course the word for bread ('pane'). As pane is a masculine word, "one little bread" becomes 'panino'.

This is a tough question. If push comes to shove, I'd choose a Cuban sandwich as made by the Latin American Cafe on Calle Ocho (8th Street) in Miami. However, that would be closely followed by an Italian sub made in a mom and pop pizza shop, or a muffuleta from Central Grocery in New Orleans.
Yeah we just love the look of horror when we eat it by the spoonful. It is a bit like drop bears - half the fun is knowing you can gross someone out with it!!!
Interesting. I eat food because I like the food, not to gross other people out. That's kind of strange.
Its a fantastic start, but you need that salami, that pepperoni, some ripe tomato, and black olives and spinach leaves and maybe some cheddar or parmesan. If you happen to be out of rye, sour dough will work.
I had a friend of mine try steamed clams (a New Englander who has never tried steamers - can you believe it?). Anyways, she hated them. She almost threw up. Lol. I was raised on them, so I really enjoy them.
I always wanted to try it, just to see what it is all about. Nothing wrong with trying new stuff. Most Americans are quite adventurous. Just look at the latest food trends. While just a few years ago many things weren't even heard of, more and more international favorites are being offered in our local grocery stores. It probably has a lot to do with food shows that have gained popularity, but that is just my personal observation. Tell us more about some of your local favorites? I personally love Gyros or Falafel sandwich. My husband loves peanut butter and lettuce.
WARNING It is VERY salty and if you try it - have it on hot buttered toast and the barest and I mean barest smear on the toast - do not do what Aussies do which is smother the toast like you are spreading peanut paste because sorry but you WILL gag. We grew up with the taste so we are used to it And the all time BEST sandwhich - bread toasted over a campfire spread with "Rosella" jam Not sure if you can get it there These are the rosellas
We grew up wondering what a "peanut butter and jelly" sandwhich was. See for us "jelly" is "jello" and the thought of wobbly bits of soft jelly on top of peanut paste - well I think we we make the "American tasting Vegemite" face lols!!!
I prefer jam to jelly or preserves. Jam is spreadable and I don't like the big chunks of fruit that are in preserves. I like smooth jam.

Not to be a "Semantic-Nazi", but isn't jam always smooth whereas marmelade is the name of the more chunky variant?
