The state saw a 50% increase in anti-Semitic incidents in 2021 compared to the year before, and Florida had the third most anti-Semitic incidents of any state in the country, behind only New York and California, according to the report. Nationally, 2021 saw a 34% increase in anti-Semitic incidents across the country. The ADL found that Florida is home to an overlapping network of white supremacists and anti-Semitic groups responsible for organizing numerous rallies and distributing hateful propaganda. All told, the ADL’s Center on Extremism found more than 400 instances of white supremacist propaganda being distributed between January 2020 and August 2022.

 

Well when you feed, exploit, feed, exploit, feed, exploit division and fear for political gain, the bar keeps moving lower and lower and you end up with the likes of Trump, his Despot Apprentice, DeSantis, and empowered radicalized folk.

The recent discoveries of antisemitic flyers in front of homes from Miami to Jacksonville has led to at least one call for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate.

Law-enforcement agencies have reported finding the flyers in places as distant as suburban Boca Raton, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach and Orlando.

In a letter dated Thursday, U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist said similar incidents have been reported in other states nationwide, including California, Colorado and Texas and that "the apparent widespread coordination warrants a fulsome national investigation."

The Anti-Defamation League reported in April that it received more than 2,700 reports of assault, harassment and vandalism in the United States during 2021, the highest total since it began tracking antisemitic incidents in 1979.

 

A few months ago my neighbors and I found a small printed flyer in a small sandwich baggie with a thumb sized rock in it on our driveways.

we all laughed about it. The news reported they guy driving around neighborhoods and tossing them in driveways got arrested. Some silly nazi stuff that no one took seriously.

it may not be as big a deal as a news outlet that needs clicks to get paid may portray.

 

So if one guy goes around passing out white supremacists fliers in public, every propaganda leaflet they find is a separate incident?

Sounds like a great way to boost the numbers and inflate some Hysteria.

But you are aware that the GOP under Trump's influence has come to embrace extremists, right? You're not somehow unaware of this, right? You do understand that they feel emboldened now that Trump, Gohmert, Greene, Boebert, Gosar, Brooks and the like have been pandering to them, right? You do see how the entire Republican Party has been changed and has shifted in that direction, right?

Gohmert just awarded a flag to a woman who was released from prison after being sentenced for her role in the Jan 6 insurrection. It's hard to imagine someone in your party doing more to encourage these extremists, short of waving a Confederate or Nazi flag.

There probably should be a federal probe at this point. Those flyers ending up in people's driveways is a thing that's been happening for decades in Florida. It doesn't happen very often, every couple of years there is an incident, but it does happen, and the puzzling thing for me is how, in an age of Ring and other security cameras all over the place, that no one has been caught doing this?

It's a mystery.

 

When I see the ADL I automatically distrust that is a conspiracy theorist propaganda operation that smears in attacks everything to the right of Bernie Sanders is anti-Semitic or white supremacist.

So I'm curious what these incidents are. I think I've seen far more hate related incidents that are hoaxes than actual occurrences.

 

So does every other country. Some of them a lot more current.

 

Makes me wonder if people print them up themselves.

Every once in awhile I'll be watching the local news and they'll talk about the story about somebody's shed or the back of their fence somebody's spray painted a swastika on it. Yeah this crap is on the news. And a lot of the times I think people that are the victim of this crime are also the perpetrator of it meaning they spray painted it on there and reported it to the news for 15 minutes of fame.

I remember watching this video of this Jewish man that walked into a bathroom and a bar and New York somewhere and he called the police and came out there with magic marker swastika drawn on his face.

That's not how hate crimes look and hate crimes are normally brutal and horrendous. Things that happen to James Byrd Jr, or Matthew Shepard.

 

Believe it or not anti-Semitic nonsense is protected speech. I would say putting out flyers is litter. And I would like for people who put a flyer on my car for window repair to face the same charges as someone who puts out an anti-semitic flyer.

I would say looking into it out of curiosity is probably the way to go and not because your Jewish but because the idea of anti-Semitism is perplexing.

 

Oh I have not discounted the idea that some of these are hoaxes, but that makes it all the more important to catch the culprits. Particularly when it seems almost impossible that someone could get get away with doing this over and over.

Last year, for example, then-Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo told the Miami Herald he was ordering a review of why the department had mistakenly reported no hate crimes as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s annual collection of hate crime data

“Florida has been undercounting hate crimes for some time,” said Brian Levin, a criminal justice professor at California State University San Bernardino and director of the university’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. “There’s no state in the country that has this poor of a response from its largest cities.”
