For many, democracy in the United Kingdom is only 100 years old.

    Seems almost too difficult to believe, or does it? For many democracy in the UK is only 100 years old.

    Representation of the People Act 1918

    The above webpage tells us that as a result of the Act, "The size of the electorate tripled from the 7.7 million who had been entitled to vote in 1912 to 21.4 million by the end of 1918."

    Although the First World War had led to a terrible loss of life, the upshot of it all was a rise in national independence, an end of Empires AND the beginnings of more democracy.
