Every once in awhile I come across an interesting tid bit fact from history, or the present, that most people do not realize. Some of them could even be considered hacks, useful for something we didn't even realize. Others are just plain odd.

So let me start off with one that I just read about that I thought was quite funny.

If you are a baby boomer, odds are you still remember the scent of your dad's aftershave. One of the most popular aftershave lotions of that generation was Aqua Velva. When it was originally sold it had a straw color to it and was very high in alcohol content, so much so that during WWII, PXs couldn't keep enough of it in stock. It was not because GIs loved the skin bracing splash, they drank the stuff to get drunk on it! The government then asked the JB Williams to do something about it, so they added a bittering agent which turned it to the blue color we are familiar with today. It didn't stop soldiers from drinking completely, they just filtered it through bread to remove it. Civilians however just liked the blue color.

The oldest condoms ever found date back to the 1640s (they were found in a cesspit at Dudley Castle), and were made from animal and fish intestines.

    Ah, that explains a lot!

    Interesting about the condoms.
In 1892, a group of 200 Australians unhappy with the government tried to start an offshoot colony in Paraguay to be called 'New Australia'.(It didn't last)

Who has ever refused the Nobel Prize?

Jean-Paul Sartre, awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, declined the prize because he had consistently declined all official honours. Le Duc Tho, awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, but Tho declined and Kissinger tried to return it unsuccessfully after the ceasefire in Vietnam failed.

Dreams have always been inspiration for writers. But some dreams inspired for the discoveries and inventions.

    One dream inspired Madame C.J. Walker to invent hair products that made her the first female American self-made millionaire. Elias Howe invented the sewing machine inspired from one of his dream. Some other discoveries are;

    • The idea of Google – Larry page
    • Alternating current generator – Tesla
    • DNA’s double helix spiral form – James Watson
    • Periodic table – Dimitri Mendeleyev

Davy Crockett was born on August 17, 1786, in what is now eastern Tennessee. At the time, however, many of the region’s residents considered themselves citizens of the so-called state of Franklin, a breakaway territory that had declared its independence from North Carolina two years earlier. Supporters of the movement—including Crockett’s father, John—pushed for Franklin to enter the union as the 14th U.S. state, but the fledgling territory fell just shy of the required vote total in Congress. Following a stint as an independent republic, Franklin was eventually reclaimed by North Carolina in 1789. By 1796, its lands had become part of the newly formed state of Tennessee.

The Statue of Liberty's face was modelled after the features of an Arabic female peasant, because it was initially intended to serve as a lighthouse to the newly formed Suez Canal. The idea never caught on with Egyptian officials, but when sculptor Bartholdi presented the concept to Americans, he had a winner.

    ACCELERATION PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE
[IMG]* One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.

    * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 11.2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.

    * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster’s supercharger.

    * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.

    * At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

    * Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

    * Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

    * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

    * If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

    * Dragsters reach over 300 MPH before you have completed reading this sentence.

    * In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4 G’s. In order to reach 200 MPH well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8 G’s.

    * Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!

    * Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.

    * The redline is actually quite high at 9500 RPM.

    * THE BOTTOM LINE: Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, & for once, NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000 per second.

The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter-mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 MPH (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66′ of the run (09/28/03, Doug Kalitta).

    Putting this all into perspective:

Lets say the you are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter twin-turbo powered Corvette Z06.

Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter-mile strip as you pass by it. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ‘Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the dragster at an honest 200 MPH. Just as you pass the Top Fuel Dragster the ‘tree’ goes green for both of you.

The dragster launches & starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums & within 3 seconds the dragster catches & passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it – from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH & not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race!

    That’s acceleration!

If a whale's fart is the size of a bubble big enough to hold a horse, How fast will a whale accelerate when the bubble bursts? Fast enough to submerge the whale in blubber?
