Clint, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is my favorite Clint movie, and the opening scene is pretty cool too.
I have that poncho... Love that poncho. In the end, the only cool looking ponchos were movie replicas. Real wool, real warm though, I had it shipped from New Jersey with Amazon.
The hook of an opening scene is not necessarily about surprise or intrigue. In a big budget blockbuster musical, you need to give them what they DO expect, but make it better. You need a big number, a stunning scene, and a star worthy entrance. Robert Wise gave his audience just that right here. Now this is actually severely truncated from what was shown in theatres where the camera scans over the Austrian Alps, over the monastery, etc with birds twittering, a stream flowing, and the orchestra building long before you ever see Andrews, who is literally nothing but a spec, and unrecognizable dot as the camera flies toward her. If you and your family come to see a musical, on a big screen with big sound and you are still not used to all that vivid color ( 1965!) You are hooked!
Well, he was definitely a big part of the movie, but the acting was good and the movie was great overall. It wouldn't have been much a movie with just one character after all!
The real best one for dramatic effect together with the perfect music accompaniment is the opening to The Big Country. No time to find a link.
Vanishing Point - 1971 The beginning sets up a mind blowing ending. Back in the day when car chase movies were big thanks to bullet.
I love movies like this, don't know why, just do. This movie's dialog is vivid and I think it's quirky like a time warp.
