I'd been using Grubhub for date nights at my place for a long time. With Covid I started doing a lot of Grubhub for regular meals. But sometimes it can get crazy expensive.

Tonight I went to order a pizza from a local place that I normally don't use. I saw an option that sounded good. The price of the extra large was shown to be 24.95. But when I entered the order, the cart showed $48.95! WTF?!?! I was thinking that was the total with delivery. But NOOOOOOO. As I completed the order I saw my pizza was going to cost $88!!!! LOL! I called them to be sure this was correct and they didn't deny it. So I went to my regular place and got an extra large pizza delivered with a salad and other items for less than $50. That includes the $10 tip I always give to the drivers.

And just as I typed the last sentence there was the familiar knock on the door. :)

I never use any of that stuff. I'm a better than average cook and if I wanna eat out I go out.

Paying for meals is a wealth diminisher I don't subscribe to .. whether eating out, take-out, or home delivered. My least favourite is eating out, though. Never understood the appeal of sitting in a room full of strangers, paying huge amounts of money for a limited range of foods .. most of which are never going to be exactly what I want. Give me a private home, an outdoor firepit or pizza oven, and good friends/family - any day.

I used to cook a lot but got out of the habit. Too much work. And the cost is offset quite a bit because when I cook, I shop. When I shop, I buy a lot more than I really need. And spices alone can get expensive if you cook a lot of good stuff.

No shopping, or putting the groceries away. No slicing and dicing or boiling or frying. No preparing and no cleaning. I haven't gone to Freshly yet but plan to soon.

I really like that now, even many of the best restaurants can be ordered for delivery. My favorite place just came up on Doordash. And buying from the really good places isn't that bad. The added cost for delivery is fairly minor compared to a $200 or more meal.

From what I'm told, Millennials never go out to shop at all anymore.

Yeah! That is just highway robbery. They have one price posted and then it doubles when you actually order it. And I don't even know where the rest comes from. The pizza was shown to be $25, then $49, then with at total of $88, and for what?

One of the things I love about living in the city again is having all of the conveniences. My ex and I lived in the wilds for 25 years, and we loved it for a very long time,it was our dream property, but I'd had enough. It took an hour just to run into town for milk.

Of course most of all I love the vast ocean of women in the city. Unfortunately I can't order them on Grubhub yet

I'm not a millennial, I'm Gen-X and I shop European style. Just enough for a day or two at a time. Spices are worth every penny and Pop raises organic beef that I get at cost, half a cow at a time in exchange for helping with farm maintenance. When the kids are gone and It's just me that may change, but for now I handle my own cooking.

I prefer trees and wild flowers to a vast ocean of humans that have no value.

If you place no value on anyone but yourself that makes sense.

You can now get condoms on Grubhub! Woohoo!

Actually not my brand but good to know in a pinch.

But I still can't get milk.

One silver lining from Covid - the end of food deserts in the US

More than 90 percent of urban areas designated by the USDA as food deserts are served by grocery delivery services (and 96 percent of food deserts are in urban areas). Grocery delivery is also becoming more and more accessible specifically for low-income shoppers.Apr 5, 2022

Nope, they're still there, and the poor can't afford it.

    That's goofy.

No, food deserts are areas where there are no stores. There is nowhere for people to buy groceries.

But surely no one would ever agree to that? Even seeing it double the first time would stop most people, wouldn't it?

Only keeping two days of food.

I can't imagine living like that.

I called them and they didn't deny that was the price. In fact they made excuses and tried to justify it. I wonder if many people don't notice the price. It says one thing and charges something else.

    I guess I didn't understand your logic.

But this is huge. Michelle Obama tried to get home delivery services to areas where the stores have all closed. But it didn't really take off until Covid came along. Now there are people who NEVER go to any store anymore. And it sounds like close to 95% of food deserts now have home delivery available.

I ran an experiment after reading about your $88 pizza. I fake-ordered a range of different things from different well known services. 3 out of 4 did the doubling thing. On the menu the item might be $12, but when it appears in your total list it's $24. And no, I didn't accidentally order two.

I'm going to call this one. It's a brazen, open, in your face scam. They're clearly getting around pertinent laws on some technicality, and banking on the fact that by the time the person gets to actually ordering, they're hungry and will just pay up.

These services should be boycotted immediately. I already boycott them, so it's on you guys :)
