All perceptions indicate that half the country views the other half as traitors and vice versa. Theres a million other threads dedicated to assigning blame... but that doesn't seem to get us anywhere.

What can be done? How long can a society function with two such ideologically opposed groups so intermingled?

Yes. The global super rich and corporate fascists being allowed to buy essentially ALL American press and media outlets converting them to their own political goals propaganda outlets has doomed democracy - which can not survive long without a free and independent press.

Hopefully the decline will be managed well and spread out across time to allow Americans to adjust to Mexican standards of living.

Much of Mexico's problems are a disarmed population subjected to rule by armed barbarians (cartel thugs).

That would not go over so well across the vast bulk of this nation.

The country would still exist, except it would have a new political system. Perhaps one similar to the Articles of Confederation.

The idea of a "united" States is and always has been a mythology. It's time Americans recognized that fact.

Secession is for the losing side, if they want to still have their policies enacted despite being rejected by the vote.

The existence of "sides" precludes the existence of a genuine republic or democracy. Essentially, it is a war by other means, where each side attempts to achieve mastery over the other through electoral and parliamentary chicanery. But as long as people refuse to be enslaved, neither side will ever achieve peace. Therefore, the only reasonable and just solution is to peacefully separate.

I'm not sure I follow you. The American revolution was basically an act of secession from the British empire and it was successful.
