I felt a bit like that about Nightwish when they first changed because the 2 singers were so different, and it took a while for the Dark Passion Play album to grow on me (but it did grow on me). A couple of years down the line, though, with another superb album under their belt, I understand more what they were doing. Obviously there were personal issues within the band with the old singer so a change had to come, and I would guess they wouldn't want to replace her with just a clone anyway, but the new singer has really come into her own on the new album, and they are heading off in slightly different direction with it. She's certainly different, but I think it's given them a new edge, and I've got to the point where I prefer them now with the new singer. The most recent album is definately worth checking out.

I'm on my annual mission to check out all the bands on the Download Festival line up, both to work out what bands I want to see, and what looks interesting generally. Here's one for you:

These guys are underrated. They're yet another band who's music makes one wonder, "why are these guys not more popular"?

After hearing 'bleed', I can't get too excited about anything else they've done. I think they hit their apex with this one... it's an awesome piece. :D

    You've got good taste.

Here's one of my favorite songs... not just from this band, but from any band...

These guys should have been bigger than they were. They were even in a David Lynch movie back in the 80's

I hadn't even heard of these guys. Their music sounds pretty advanced for the time.

Here is a vid I made to go with Bruce Dickinson's bad ass song. Forgive the poor resolution in some parts.

Love this band. I actually like all the high pitched vocals Dani does.

    Double bass drum challenge.

Double bass drumming is an essential element to metal music. For myself, the tempo and tone of the double bass sometimes dictates my reaction to a metal piece. There are some songs that I like simply because of what the percussionist does with his bass drums. I was wondering if any fellow PF metal heads had examples of songs which they liked mostly due to the percussion, or if they'd like to share a wicked example of DB.

This is what inspired my post... fast forward to 3:43, have your mind blown (despite the use of triggers or not).

I probably wouldn't go quite that far, but I often think the contribution made by drummers to the overall feel of a song is generally underrated by alot of people. I do like to hear interesting drumming (and it's not all about pure technical brilliance, either although clearly some proficiency helps!). It's for that reason why the current original Sabbath lineup controversy irritates me - Bill Ward was at least as important to the sound (and success) of those original Sabbath albums, even if others within the band apparently don't seem to see it that way! It's not double bass drum stuff, of course, but where would this song be without the drums?

One band I saw last year (not for the first time) where the drummer really impressed me (again!), even though he rarely gets a mention, was DevilDriver. John Boecklin is brutal as a drummer, and critical to the overall feel of the music. It's not just that brutality, though, there's alot going on there in terms of varying the rhythms to make the whole thing interesting. It's the kind fo thing alot of people seem to miss, but if you like drumming, they are definately a band worth seeing!

Some of my favorite drumming, though, comes from the more extreme prog metal/djent type stuff. this is actually my favorite song, and part of the reason is that the interplay of rhythms between the drums and everything else is so well constructed, and beautifully executed (they play this stuff live, and it's just as precise). It's all superb, but one highlight for me is just the way the rhythm changes behind the music at the key change in the climactic section (from about 12:10 on, key change at about 12:30). It's little touches and moments like that which make the difference between a good song and a great song for me.

    2:10 - 2:40... yes...

I hadn't heard these guys before. Good stuff, sounds sort of like Mastadon and Dream Theater having a prolonged jam session. :) The percussion is really intricate, that seems to a requirement of prog groups.

They only managed one demo, one EP, and one full length. They all became very collectible (the EP especially... I have the others, but not that one). I guess they reformed somewhat recently and are supposedly working on new material.

This one absolutely blew me away the first time I listened to it. Fast forward to 7:04. From that point to the end of the song, it's probably the fastest, most chaotic metal I've ever heard. The drumming is absolutely insane.

If you like Mastadon and Dream Theater, the Between The Buried and Me album 'Colors' is an absolute essential (and their others are pretty good too)!

Here's some more of that kind of stuff worth checking out:

    And, of course, some Opeth:
