Hello everyone. the comment that Trump made a week or so ago seems to still be in the news to some extent and I have a legit question regarding the whole "sh*thole" or "sh*thouse" comment of his. According to most reports Trump didn't want immigrants into the USA from Haiti or Africa but rather from Norway. This sparked a full on debate about racism and whether the president is racist or not. Now because I live in Austria, and race was really never an issue or a topic, it feels kinda odd that this comment was interpreted racist first. (To me it says a lot about the culture) I do see the argument for the point of view that it's racist, but in this case I wonder whether the comment was based more on the fact that he just foolish. Norway, apart from being nearly 100% white, is also one of the richest countries per capita in the world. And the wealth of that country seems would to me be more likely, specifically because the prime minister of Norway was at the white house the same day. It feels like the PC-police is all over the place, which annoys me specifically because I usually am in support of the PC culture. But nowhere in any media outlet I have seen, was the focus on the wealth of set region and I wonder would the backlash been the same if he'd said Switzerland.
Yes it would. The Trump opposition on the left is obsessed with race so just about everything is filtered through a racial filter.
The countries that are in such disarray like Haiti and the three countries in Africa that are on the TPS list is not because of the people but because of a corrupt government.
I am of the opinion that people on both sides of the aisle that know the context of the Norway ambassador and the TPS list don't really believe the comment was racist. But Durbin is a political opportunist and when he heard the comments he jumped to the microphones hoping to further the agenda of portraying DT as a racist.
The fact remains that Trump misprivileged Norway by name shaming Haiti. Of course the comment had racial overtones, given American history and culture.
Haiti is a disaster. Poorest country in the Americas and one of the poorest in the world in spite of all the money US continues to funnel into it. DT perhaps should not have name-shamed Haiti in a private meeting, but everyone including Haitians knows that it is true. Durbin shouldn't have rushed to the Mic to broadcast it. I have no idea why you want to make this about race.
It would be worse, in addition to racism accusations, the hysterical left would have accused Trump of money laundering and stealing jewish pre-WWII deposits which is what Switzerland does for a living lol
