Ok, so I saw a headline earlier today that a majority of people polled think we're heading into a recession.

Well, I don't think so. As America has moved away from the Coronavirus shutdown, and in later months, most recently, people are going back to work, and, in fact, this has been going on for a while now. People are making money now. How are we going into a recession if the people have money?

I think we have to wait until people experience burn out and stop working so much before we enter the next recession.

This is a good thread to mark and revisit in a few months time.

Because of Covid and Putin's war we're going to have some inflation.

Agricultural inflation can get treacherous, not much here, but in poor countries it can topple governments.

Putin has unleashed chaos, wish I could tell you how bad it will get, but I can tell you I am worried.

More money isn't always going to be better if that money is worth less.

    Oh, are they?

    Median income 2010: $49,445

estimated median income for 2022, based on January: $74,099 - a 49.9% increase

    median home price 2010: $222,900

    median home price 2021: $346,900 - a 55.6% increase

Sounds like the cost of living is 5.7% less affordable than it was 10 years ago.

People are so whiny today. If they can't afford a house, they shouldn't buy a house. They should go live with family or go on welfare and get a housing voucher. Nice things cost money. Where I live there are a lot of beach-front houses that sell for over a million each.

Hi as someone who is living with family because I can’t afford things anymore I would like to take the time out of my day to inform you of this:

I have been legally homeless 3 times in the past 5 years due in part to increased living expenses. I am angry, confused and anxious about where I will be staying. I am politically angry and like many people out there becoming increasingly radicalized. Such radicalization is what is fueling political violence and last time I checked, political violence is not good for business. So the next time you think people are “whining” because they can’t afford things, take a second and think about the human cost of such things.

Trying to change the topic? I thought the topic we were talking about was whether people have more money.

It must be hard for you to decide whether you hate Democrats or Republicans more.

Republicans: The ones who don't care about you; Democrats: The ones who will make conditions even worse. (But I'm sure jamming another 10 million people into the country, who will concentrate in the higher population density areas, will not exacerbate housing shortages or push prices higher. And nothing makes your trip to the store more pleasurable than a little inflation)

More like which one will at least give me rights? Republicans will end up being the death of me because they will outlaw being LGBT. Democrats won’t do that. Worse is they leave me alone and I am more than fine being left alone.

    And you actually believe that?

News stations just say stuff like this to keep the Democrats in power.

(No, Republicans aren't going to pay for a free sex change operation, if that's what you mean)

Okay, so throw out the LGBT issues, then who will you support?

Trump literally took away my right to join the military, and DeSantis is criminalizing talking about LGBT things in school. Obama supported gay marriage and helped promote protections for LGBT people. Biden brought on a trans woman to be Sec of Health.

That's not exactly what they're doing over there in Florida. The media is mischaracterizing that.

Do you think she was the most qualified applicant?

That's really a reason you're going to give a politician your vote?

The bill would out LGBT kids, which is an act of violence against LGBT kids. It would ban discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in K-3. Because the only sexual orientation that matters is straight and cis. Don’t try to gaslight me on this, I know what the bill would do. I read it.

Not very well apparently. Since no discussion of ANY gender orientation is allowed - in accordance with current curriculum how exactly would it out LGBT kids?

That's not really true. The bill only requires parents to be notified of any health or mental health services, or if the school decides to monitor that student's mental/ emotional wellbeing. The school would also not be allowed to prohibit any of its employees from notifying the parents about things relevant to the child's mental/emotional wellbeing.

Maybe you prefer the previous state of affairs where school employees can face retribution for snitching to the child's parents?

So… starts it’s not gender orientation, it’s gender identity. Right so does that mean the school will drop any books about mommy and daddy outings? There’s a book at school called “Froggys day with his dad” or something like that. Would that book be banned because it talks about male gender identity?

And there are more parts of the bill that would include outing kids to their parents if they came out of the closet to a teacher.

Yeah… that puts kids to their parents because any affirmation of their gender identity or sexual orientation would count as a mental health service. The definition is so broad that it can include a teacher saying that they will use a students preferred name in school.

Yeah that’s outing kids to their parents and creating a system that encourages that kind of behavior. In effect, creating acts of violence against LGBT kids by denying them access to a safe school environment.

Why does their "gender identity" need to be "affirmed" in some special way?

Okay, I'll agree with you and concede that children should be entitled to some privacy in the school setting, so this proposed law did go a little too far. But the main intent of the law was to prevent the school from providing any programs or education that the parents do not know about.

Now if you wanted to talk about teenage abortion, that could be another topic, and I'm not so sure privacy should apply there.

Are you asking why do trans people want to be respected as the gender they choose? Pretty simple reason actually. Because trans people want to be respected. Not much more of a reason than that.

How about if the school just respects you for being a person and not for being trans?

I honestly have no words. I would say it’s pretty obvious why parents can’t have access to what a school is teaching their child. Because it will be on a test one day. And the last thing the teacher needs to worry about is what a parent who has no business talking about a lesson plan, let alone critique one, thinks about how they run their class. The idea is to keep parents away from their kids so the kids can do their own thing and have their own space to learn and develop. Same with basic medical information. Sometimes the parents don’t need to know, or should know. Really anything dealing with a teenagers sex life. Don’t bother asking. Give advice but let teens learn.
