New Zealand shooting: Prime minister says gun reforms are coming

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...c5d0999c21e_story.html?utm_term=.d16e630e84eb

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — New Zealand’s coalition government plans to announce gun law changes within the next week in response to Friday’s deadly shooting rampage at two mosques in Christchurch, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Monday.

The measures could include restricting the military-style semiautomatic weapons that were used in the attacks, which killed 50 Muslim worshipers and injured more than 40. Similar weapons have been used in recent mass shootings in the United States.

The death toll exceeds New Zealand’s annual homicide rate; 35 people were killed in 2017, the latest year for which figures are available.
    ..................................................................................................................
When gun control measures that reduce the likelihood of military style weapons being available to be used in a massacre are an option, after a massacre has occurred, rational people exercise the option. They do so because gun violence is a public safety issue for which the public's safety outweighs the right to possess these types of weapons. I don't think NZ has an antiquated, 240 year old provision stating well regulated militias can have muskets or a gun lobbying organization that intimidates members of Congress so my guess is there's a fair chance reform will pass.

It's insane to do nothing. It's equally insane to just punish perpetrators.

More and more, we are seeing crimes committed by neoNazis, white nationalists, and white supremacists. We don't see any virtuous deeds or words from them. So with that record I think and hope it would be a matter of time until such organizations are identified as criminal organizations and members are arrested.

My gun reform measure reads: Use a gun to commit a murder and the trial will be one day, no appeals, execution immediately upon delivery of verdict.

I agree...hence why we saw nothing as these continue to rise up during the Obama Admin, and quickly after we saw a couple here the Trump Admin unilaterially move to undo the crazy Obama policy on bump stocks.

Yes, yes, we should treat everyone like crap because a few people are *******s. Typical leftist solution to a problem penalize everyone because someone somewhere is a miserable murdering scumbag. Now that's insane.

Society is the problem.. BUT nobody has the gonads to come out and say it... Easier to blame an inanimate object then look in the mirror ..

What was the "crazy Obama policy on bump stocks?"

    https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-...ciation/nra-claim-obama-approved-bump-stocks/

Are you aware............WASHINGTON — Justice Department officials have indicated they do not believe the department can regulate the sale of gun bump stocks without congressional action, underscoring concern that an ongoing administrative review into that question is little more than an effort to slow-roll a politically divisive issue.

Yet that is by itself an utterly meaningless stat. One should note that in the US all crimes including homicides decreased following the liberalization of concealed carry laws and the rise of three strikes laws dropped like a stone.

That is utterly ridiculous. It isn't even a logical response to what I said.

There are many semi-automatics with similar capabilities. They just don't look like military weapons. . Banning guns because of what they look like borders on insanity. It is just a feel good measure with no real meaning. You can also buy 22 rifles which are very military looking.

They set up laws that allow them to murder 100s of millions of their fellow countrymen?

If forks are as effective as guns, why don't you protect yourself with one?

Well it is until a guy has a knife, then I have to grab my spoon. The cutlery arms race is brutal.

Luckily, forks and spoons are protected by the 2nd Amendment, so buy all you want.

Taking away guns from people who live an hour from the nearest police station is insane. A gun is their only protection.
