Hewlett Packard Enterprise allowed a Russian defense agency to review the inner workings of cyber defense software used by the Pentagon to guard its computer networks, according to Russian regulatory records and interviews with people with direct knowledge of the issue.

The HPE system, called ArcSight, serves as a cybersecurity nerve center for much of the U.S. military, alerting analysts when it detects that computer systems may have come under attack (Graphic: tmsnrt.rs/2yHK3VS). ArcSight is also widely used in the private sector.

The Russian review of ArcSight’s source code, the closely guarded internal instructions of the software, was part of HPE’s effort to win the certification required to sell the product to Russia’s public sector, according to the regulatory records seen by Reuters and confirmed by a company spokeswoman.

Six former U.S. intelligence officials, as well as former ArcSight employees and independent security experts, said the source code review could help Moscow discover weaknesses in the software, potentially helping attackers to blind the U.S. military to a cyber attack.

Well there are bright sides in life. Imagine, that for some reason you want to occupy a planet of some other solar system. Due to the time it will take to travel there, due to weight/time restrictions it would be a good idea to send some sort of an Artificial Intelligence in command of your conquering armies of automatic replicating computerized killer machines (with gigantic human like robots) to do the initial survey, to do the dirty work of cleansing any local life forms, probably even some sort of terraforming and in general to prepare the system for your colonists to arrive. That would be a sensible approach to the problem… In my opinion …

It is good to say that in our case such an approach is invalid due to Russian hackers. These guys seem likely to be able to penetrate any means of defense and to hack or at least to spoil any sort of programming. We seem to be quite safe from any sort of Skynet taking over Earth in couple of next decades.

    :)
