Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan President, Dead at 58

Obviously, breaking news, reported just moments ago. Perhaps too early to speculate, but how might this impact world markets?

With brother Raul firmly in power, Fidel's passing would have no worldwide impact (IMO).

Chavez however, is a completely different story. The next few days/weeks, should be interesting to follow.

I knew this was going to be happening soon. Kind of a sigh of relief if you're America but I bet its gonna suck if you're from Venezuela. I'm more curious over the political implications this will mean for that country.

It's actually quite rare for a leader to actually give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about his people.

Hugo Chavez was too communitarian for my tastes, steered his country into the ambiguously illiberal zone betwixt democracy and authoritarianism, there are a lot of matters on which he and I did not see eye to eye, and I honestly consider him to have been a less inspirational figure in contemporary Latin America than was Lula down in Brazil.

Still, it is a shame to see him leave us so soon. He fought well against poverty and was a bold visionary. For these things he has my respect. I hope future leaders of Venezuela will continue to push for integration in the South American Union, keep the peace with neighboring Colombia, and resolve to continue exploring alternatives to the Washington Consensus.

The silver lining on the clouds here, of course, is that perhaps Venezuelan leaders will soon be afforded an opportunity to pull their country back from the brink - consolidating their democracy, rolling back policies which infringe on a number of individual liberties, and giving Mesa de la Unidad Democrática yet another shot at challenging the PSUV's hold on power.

lip service while filling his pockets isn't giving a (*)(*)(*)(*), it's lip service while filling his pockets. every problem his country had got worse under his regime.

Doesn't need to be. He's a symbol, a figurehead. Communism is dead, and so should he.

He was a sadistic thug. I actually had an opportunity to meet him, all I had to do was say yes. I was VERY tempted, but ultimately I said no because I was genuinely concerned that I'd say what I really thought and nobody would ever see me alive again, nor find my body.

Oh well, the result of his socialist ideals was quite predictable. Countries change, centuries change, leaders change...the results don't:

So every Venezuelan now has a more equal slice of the cake. The trouble is, that cake has not been getting much bigger. "Venezuela is the fifth largest economy in Latin America, but during the last decade, it's been the worst performer in GDP per capita growth," says Arturo Franco of the Center for International Development at Harvard University.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20795781

The price of a barrel of oil is now 10 times what it was when Mr Chavez was first elected, yet all other Latin American countries outperformed Venezuela. RIP Hugo Chavez, RIP socialist ideals.

I did admire Chavez for refusing to go along with the international banksters. The rich need no subsidies.

I do not care whether the rich get any richer as long as the poor do not get poorer. It is even better when the poor get a bigger slice of the ecconomy, even if the rich get a smaller piece.

I hope that his successor can keep the vulture capitalists out of the country.
