First of all, I have no Mexican heritage, but even if I did, the hyphen would link me to the (obviously) larger and therefore more important part. That's how hyphens work.

There is no one in this country (other than the indigenous people) who doesn't have some heritage other than simply American. There is nothing at all wrong with acknowledging that heritage.

I understand the idea that having a sense of singularity is in opposition to the divisiveness of politics today, but we can't create artificial requirements for patriotism based on that idea.

If I was born in the USA to parents who were born in the USA, I am an American. What I choose to call myself is none of your business.

Is there a white group that self identifies as hyphenated Americans? If so I would include them but what I constantly hear is African and Mexican American being used by those two groups.

It seems simple to me. Are you American or are you Mexican-American. Pick a country of allegiance and fully support it or only your American half gets to vote. I don’t want people who can’t fully commit to America getting a full vote

Maybe that's because the White ethnic were allowed into the club, but Blacks and Mexicans were not.
I used to work with a lady who had Irish ancestry. She told me her ancestors changed their Irish sounding name to a more American sounding name to avoid racism.
That was fairly easy for people with White skin. Not so for Blacks or Mexicans.
    So, your OP sounds racist.

Call yourself green cheese if you want I don’t care but if you want full participation as a voter you should be able to pledge full allegiance to America. When you literally put Africa before America it’s only natural your allegiance to America is suspect.

To your ears everything sounds racist. I could say I had white rice for dinner and the hair on the back of your neck would stand up.

What if someone votes based on what's best for Israel but do NOT identify as Israeli-American?

How much are votes by Native Americans counted in your plan? They are the only American's that didn't immigrate to this country.

So, hyphenated Americans get half the vote but pay full taxes?

There are ALWAYS people protesting and denying a sitting President. In this case, how does carrying their flag detract from the idea they do not believe a sitting president is truly working for their (all people) best interests?

Some teachers in very rich areas make quite a bit of money which makes the average salary seem like it's a decent salary. It's not. Factor in the number of hours teachers work OUTSIDE the classroom, the cost of living and that some teachers pay for school supplies...it's not all that great a salary.

No, it's not complex. It's quite simply to understand that you like division and tryanny.

Who hasn't been hyphenated? Even whites like Italian-Americans and Irish-Americans have been hyphenated

Harkening to the good ole days are you?

At least when they were slaves, blacks still counted as 3/5ths. Now you want to make them 1/2 of a person.

Curious? No. Purposely. The blacks were 3/5th back in the slave days. I guess that was too good for them.

Have been? I'm talking about now and people of any race creed or color self identifying as only half American. Half American=half a vote.

So you agree that Irish sourced "Americans" are not American if they carry Irish flags and March in a St. Patrick's day parade being that St. Patrick is not American.

Obviously you don't know the history behind that or you wouldn't attempt to use it as an example of racism. Try reading a book now and then.

Only if they also self identity as Irish American. At that point their allegiance is called into question.

It is curious to me that when Americans are asked about their nationality they name some other country. An American named O'Connell says he is Irish. One called Battaglia says he is Italian. When someone asks me, I say that I am American. No hyphen required.

So if Trumpists carry Russian flags and chant "down with American Intell agencies" at Trump rallied that would be ok with you?

That would be the clean way to go.

What would Norte Dame do if they are barred from calling there schoo the "Fighting Irish"?

It was the people who self identified as "Italian-Americans" who were mad as hell when statues of Christopher Columbus were ripped down.

I get it, I'm no fan of hyphenating Americans, it's divisive, tribal and leads to Balkanization of the country.

Ok, you were not that clear about your position, well as far as I could tell from some of your posts, anyway

Interesting statement since the RedSkins were just forced to change their name to be PC. Are the fighting Irish next to go?
