So people are starving because they can't get a job for some stupid reason.

    They apply for food syamsp.

And then the government takes them away to what?

Punsh them for starving and not having a job?

The OP makes no sense what so ever.

Food stamps are a way of helping people. Why should some people have to starve because of a few asshats that won'[t let them have a job for whatever stupid reason?

I say that it isn't fair that people are forced at the point of a gun to support those people who receive food stamps to begin with.

Why not tax veterans' benefits as well? No reason not to, by the reasoning here.

Taxing unemployment bennies was one of Reagan's ideas, the guy who supposedly 'didn't raise taxes'; taxes on waitresses and the unemployed don't count as tax increases, apparently.

I share your frustration, since I dislike my hard earned money being stolen from me - but this seems pretty obvious. Why would the government give you money only to take it back?

What exactly would you propose as the solution? Get rid of the tax exemption and raise their benefit by an equivalent amount? Why?

I think only the right likes more government programs while claiming to be for smaller government. I believe we should be simplifying our public policies to lower our tax burden. We already have existing infrastructure and laws regarding the concept of employment at will. Unemployment compensation could enable socialism to bailout capitalism like usual, and in a market friendly manner.

I'm not in favor of government programs. If I had a choice I'd do away with every last cent of government spending.

That said, I share your anger at most of the right, especially elected officials. They have this vendetta against taxes (fair enough), but ignore spending - thus allowing the astronomical increases in debt that have occurred under most recent Republican presidents.

Peeps need to realize that reducing taxation doesn't actually reduce effective taxation. They just borrow and print money instead; which, incidentally, is a much easier form of revenue raising to get away with. Everyone knows if you raise the income tax, practically nobody cares if you borrow another $100bn from China, or announce another round of QE.

Yes, the right only has a problem with tax and spend not spend and finance.

Something is not accurate with that information. Where is North Carolina? I know that North Carolina doesn't exempt food from sales tax. So it should be on one of the last three categories. Where is it?

Solution? They are taxed at the same rate as me. Imagine that. I'm asking for equal taxes for everyone. If a single person home gets 189 worth of food stamps, they can buy whatever that would buy for anyone else with 189 bucks in their pocket.

Sort of, but not really. Social Security gets special treatment so that a person getting only social security is not likely to have to pay taxes on it. It became an issue when they forced seniors to file in order to get the special stimulus they (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ed about being left out. The IRS even changed the tax forms that year so they could just check a box saying they were filing to get the rebate without having to complete the rest of the returns.

First of all, my state (Washington) doesn't tax food. They tax neither wage earners nor 'govmt takers'. Second, I earned my Social Security payments. I am old and I am taking out what I paid in. Rich people also take SSI payments, regardless of their current income. I paid over 15% of my hard earned wages over my entire life to fund social security, and I say (*)(*)(*)(*) you to anyone that says I am on the government 'dole'. If you work a grunt job your entire life, then get back to me about cheesing the government (by 'cheesing the government' I mean taking tax dollars the current hard-working people pay). If you are a current hard-working individual, it is difficult for me to see why you think I don't deserve to be returned what I paid into the system. I probably won't see half of what I paid before I die, so let's call that 'paying forward'. If I outlive the funds that I paid, then you get to call me a 'taker'. Until then, screw you.

Over here I'm pretty sure public workers don't have to pay tax on their income. I know for a fact that military members don't, I'm pretty sure it applies to all public workers, but someone should correct me if I'm wrong.

I would imagine that the unions asked for a pay increase and instead got a tax exemption. What's the difference? It's basically just a pay rise for public sector employees.

I don't agree with pay increases for public service workers, since I think they should be employed voluntarily, but I don't have any particular issue with that pay rise coming through tax cuts or pay increases. In fact, the former probably saves on tax bureaucracy.

Are you saying that SNAP is not funded by taxpayers?

Public workers, at least civil service federal workers, have to pay taxes on their income in the U.S. State civil service workers and teachers have to pay federal income tax, and in states with a state income tax, they usually have to pay a state income tax as well. Military members do as well, unless they are in a combat zone, in which case they don't have to pay on the first $5500 or so a month.

Some of the people here amaze me, although I suppose I should be grateful to them. I'm almost done with my pre-election series on why I am a liberal. After reading some of the posts, the series could have been shorter. I am a liberal because I DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE YOU.

If I had some of the attitudes I've seen here, and also had any sense of decency, I would be ashamed of myself.

That seems to be the case. People pick parties and ideologies not because they've done a rational review of the issues, but because they either want to fit in with one group, or despise another and want to be as different as possible.
