Link: Idris Elba proposes dulling kitchen knives to curb stabbing deaths Actor Idris Elba has suggested more action can be taken to make kitchen knives safer to reduce stabbings across the country. The 52-year-old was speaking ahead of the release on Wednesday of Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis, a documentary which sees the Luther star spend 12 months exploring the reality of the UK’s stabbing epidemic. Elba claimed that around 25 per cent of stabbings are perpetrated using knives commonly found at home, and “areas of innovation” could help reduce this. “Not all kitchen knives need to have a point on them, that sounds like a crazy thing to say,” he told BBC Radio 4. “But you can still cut your food without the point on your knife, which is an innovative way to look at it.”... Whenever there's a stabbing in the US, those on my side of the aisle will often mock the gun control crowd by calling for "common sense knife control." It appears the UK is taking me & my ilk seriously. Elba's doc is a government-funded BBC production. Beyond parody.
The problem is, that without pointy knives, people will take to headbutting each other. And then they'll need to do nasty things to make people's skulls less thick.
Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it. Pointy sticks can kill. It's long past time for common sense wood control, Great Britain.
Well we will have to ban grinders to because anyone with a grinder can put a point back on in however long it takes to find and hook up your grinder plus 45 seconds.
Sounds a lot like they want to live in a prison society. In a prison kitchen, the tips are rounded off and the knives are secured with a short chain or a cable and of course always counted at the end of a shift and the beginning. And just think, what a great opportunity to throw even more citizens into prison because they have the audacity to carry a knife.
The real problem of course is social. The U.K. has taken in high levels of immigration. Those immigrants settle in higher density areas where more opportunities are available for immigrants, and where the immigrants can live near those of their same kind, being less isolated. But these areas are also higher cost areas, and there's a reason few working class white people choose to live there since it's more difficult to afford living. So in many of these households, both parents have to be gone all day to afford paying rent, leaving the children mostly unparented. So these latchkey kids wander the streets up to no good. Either that or the parents are on welfare and can't afford to buy the child anything, which also can lead to a higher chance of crime, with the child having nothing else to do, or looking for some way to get money. Around half these stabbings are committed by teen boys (12 to 19 years old) from immigrant families that came from Africa (a smaller number from some other Muslim countries, and a very small number of white British boys from very disadvantaged/troubled families can also get caught up in these gangs). The United States has long experienced similar problems since around the very late 1960s, but the U.K. has only recently gotten a dose of diversity, so all this comes as relatively new to the British. Many of these poorer immigrant neighborhoods have very small living spaces and not much access to nearby large open spaces. So I think that does contribute to the social dysfunction.
