This question is logical because the geography of Canada's Bay of Fundy produces the world's highest tides. In my part of Nova Scotia in Guysborough County there is very little funnelling of tidal waters......... so high tide is only about one to one point five meters above low tide.

In the eastern area of the Bay of Fundy high tide levels are up by ten to fifteen meters.

Oceanographers attribute it to tidal resonance resulting from a coincidence of timing: the time it takes a large wave to go from the mouth of the bay to the inner shore and back is practically the same as the time from one high tide to the next. According to the Canadian Hydrographic Service there is a 16.8-metre (55-foot) tidal range in Leaf Basin for Ungava Bay and 17 meters (56 feet) at Burntcoat Head for the Bay of Fundy.[5] The range at Leaf Basin is higher on average than at Minas Basin; however, the highest recorded tidal ranges ever measured are at Burntcoat Head and result from spring tides measured at the peak of the tidal cycle every 18 years.

The highest water level ever recorded in the Bay of Fundy system occurred at the head of the Minas Basin on the night of October 4–5, 1869 during a tropical cyclone named the "Saxby Gale". The water level of 21.6 meters (71 feet) resulted from the combination of high winds, abnormally low atmospheric pressure, and a spring tide.

The dike topping was essential to protect farmland from the tidal water swirling in from the Bay of Fundy. Those world-renown high tides and storm surges now threaten the lifeline that connects Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and the rest of the country and North America.

That land connection is the Isthmus of Chignecto, a narrow strip of land that includes 20 kilometres of Trans-Canada Highway and CN rail, along with 35 kilometres of electric lines and dikes. A spokesman for the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department said 14,600 vehicles, including 2,400 transport trucks, travel the corridor between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick daily. than the thirty centimeteres...... due to the fact that the land form where I live
DOES NOT have a 15 X multiplier effect on tidal waters.

Am I being alarmist and really missing some important factor that

the 10 X to 15 X multiplier for high tides in the eastern area of the Bay of Fundy ............. could well continue to follow through if average ocean levels were to
rise a significant amount. There are two primary reasons:

1. The land form of the Bay of Fundy funnels high tide waters from a very wide
area of the Atlantic Ocean into a more and more narrow area.

2. The fact that the distance from Yarmouth to Truro, Nova Scotia is about 174 miles......
means that the waters of the previous high tide......... cannot sufficiently drain before the next high tide
begins to come in........... WHICH MEANS THAT THE NEW HIGH TIDE WATERS..... tend to pile on top of.....
the receding high tide waters! (It takes over four hours to drive from Truro to Yarmouth Nova Scotia..... and obvioulsy
the receding high tide waters cannot travel as fast as our cars so each new high tide for the Bay of Fundy..... adds to the previous high tide waters that were not able to fully drain from the Fundy)!

Another approach would be to think like the Seaway Project where Cardinal and Morrisburg and lots of farms and places on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence were moved and the land flooded with the power dam near Cornwall. The idea with Fundy would in the energy extraction view would be to tell all the low land people to hit it, your property is ruined. At the sea entrance somewhere more in the direction toward St. John to create a one way valve type mechanism. Let the tide water come rushing and don't let it leave right away. When the tide forces have receded then release the water through turbines to generate electricity. From half tide to low tide and back to just coming back again all the stored water has to be used. It might also be possible to get some energy out of the water when it is rushing in at high tide.

I'm sure some high math and some good engineers could get the greatest benefit possible from conditions we otherwise cannot control. Also do not give up on the earth getting ever hotter as it may well be cooling for a while before us. All the end of world alarmist like Paul Ehrlich and the peak oil we would be burning camel dung by 1999 alarmist have all failed miserably in their predictions. The big problem with all of them is that they are trying to tell us something about the future. Conservative minded people know the secret, if you want to predict the future get out in front of it and do something to shape the future with your own hands.

In my opinion Mr. Mervyn DePendleton's idea of a RELIEF CHANNEL is brilliant.........
so I am going to refer to it as Plan A....... because the Plan B that I have in mind is obviously going to be considerably more difficult.

My Plan B is to attempt to organize large scale desalination of ocean water in Australia, California, Texas, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and other nations on such a massive scale that we desalinate and add a similar amount of water to the water table of desert nations as is being added to the world's oceans as ice cracks and slides off the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, the land based Greenland Ice Pack or the world's glaciers.

Australia has the arid real estate and Israel has already developed the technology that makes Plan B theoretically possible.

Should Sorek 2 be in Australia or California?

Tidal dynamics are extremely complex with multiple variables and influences, so my answer is yes but stipulated by storm surge, temperatures, wind direction...etc...even what part of the bay you are next to. Every time anyone attempts to ask simplified questions of complex issues, giving a yes or no answer is inadequate and incomplete.

True... this is complex but the part of the Isthmus of Chignecto that would flood if
high tide rose by as little as one meter..... is all well within the area of the Bay of Fundy where
high tides are up by 12 to 14 meters or more two times each day.

So since low tide to high tide where I live is only about one meter...... it seems to me that since high tides in that area are 12 - 14 times as high two times daily....... I am thinking that if average oceans were to rise by ten cms where I live...... perhaps high tide on the Isthmus of Chignecto could well rise by 10 cms X 12 - 120 cms?

Basically Dennis, yes in could....on Tuesday but Friday it wont. St. Andrews will be inundated while St. Johns gets a puddle on Mrs. Bakers doorstep. Parts of the bay of Fundy would be heavily effected and others will not, eventually erosion will make it all pointless anyway. If you are in Bar harbor and worried I suggest you move because NO ONE can tell you what is going to happen.

I am glad that you mentioned EROSION..... because that is looking like a huge question........
It looks to me as if the entire Isthmus of Chignecto is beginning to LIQUEFY..... which would mean that it is only a matter of time before that entire area is washed into the Bay of Fundy and / or the Gulf of St. Lawrence!

What will all that extra mud and silt do to what remains of the Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine fishing industry???????

My off hand guess is that only one to five percent of the soil on the Isthmus of Chignecto
is highly vulnerable to behaving somewhat like a liquid..........
but....... that is a sufficient potential amount of dirt to have a significant negative impact on Nova Scotia's already vulnerable fishing industry.

I am hoping that this possible threat to our fishing industry causes people in my area to become much more
willing to research possible short term...... and possible long term responses to this threat.

By 1882, Ketchum had found backers for his railway. One of them, Charles Tupper, the minister of Canals and Railways and the local MP, convinced the federal government to provide subsidies for Ketchum's Chignecto Marine Transportation Company.

Construction began in 1888. For the next three years the small communities on the Isthmus of Chignecto buzzed with activity as 4,000 labourers worked on the project, up to 1,200 Italian navvies and Scottish stonemasons. They toiled mostly with picks, shovels and hammers to lay the foundations, build the rail beds and bridges and dig out the dry docks that would become the Chignecto Ship Railway. They erected a huge coffer dam at Tidnish to dry up the sea bottom in order to build the dry dock and breakwaters.

Yes..... this topic is complicated..... but I am kind of amazed how the extremely important statistic on the amount of H2O being ADDED to the central region of Antarctica tends to be ignored by the people promoting a Carbon Tax, Carbon Tax, Carbon Tax!?

I have a theory on why they usually tend to ignore this information.........
I think it is because they know that if people knew that the amount of H2O being added to Antarctica is what has been saving our coastal communities from rising ocean levels....... up until now....
people would realize that a Carbon Tax will be almost useless over the short term, (fifty to a hundred years), in protecting low lying land from the threat of rising ocean levels and people might tend to consider options such as the Carl Cantrell theory that I promoted in my 2008 campaign:

Tidal dynamics are extremely complex with multiple variables and influences, so my answer is yes but stipulated by storm surge, temperatures, wind direction...etc...even what part of the bay you are next to. One thing that we do know for sure is that when the shift happens.......
and when the amount of H2O being ADDED to Antarctica is no longer roughly equal to or even greater than the
amount of ice cracking and sliding off the land based Greenland Ice Sheet or the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.......
we are going to need something much more effective over the short term than a carbon tax to save coastal communities and the Isthmus of Chignecto.

I believe that we will need to finance mega-scale desalination of ocean water to attempt to desalinate a comparable amount of ocean water and add it to the water tables of the world that are being depleted by human use....... and by a general Global Warming trend.... as is being added to the oceans.

Dear residents of Indian Harbour Lake, Sonora and Wine Harbour: I am campaigning for the office of Municipal Councilor for St. Mary's District 4.

There are three primary threats to the quality of life for all of us who live here. High unemployment will probably force most of our young people to move far away to find jobs. Because of government cut backs St. Mary's Educational Centre may be closed as early as 2011. In the near future record high tides may devastate our roads and homes that are only a few feet above sea level. We are being told that there is little that you and I can do about any of these problems but this is simply not true.

Satellite pictures show rapid melting of Arctic ice but only about ten percent is above water level. Ice occupies more space than liquid water so until now we have experienced rather little ocean level rise. Our situation will be entirely different if and when melting occurs in the massive ice pack on Greenland and Antarctica that sit on land.

I am in agreement with environmentalist and economist Bjorn Lomborg that a carbon shift policy will probably be ineffective over the short term in combating global temperature increases or in preventing a destructive rise in world ocean levels.

Another promising method to green the deserts is to use hydrogen fuel cell technology to power vehicles in the hottest and driest regions of the earth. Imagine millions of vehicles across the Sahara, the Middle East, near the US Mojave desert and in the outback of Australia all spewing harmless water vapor as exhaust! Rest assured humidity and rainfall will increase in those areas and vegetation will grow.

Last week I wrote a lengthy e-mail to Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. "Ms. May, if you owned a large apartment building and your tenants complained that the rooms were too warm would you listen to the advice of the contractor who was telling you to rip all the insulation out of the walls of this structure?"

Ms. May deserves credit for encouraging Canadian political leaders to take environmental issues more seriously but at this time I feel that she has far too much confidence in the proposals put forward at Kyoto. The skepticism that Prime Minister Harper had for this accord seems to have been based on sound reasoning. Liberal Leader Stephane Dion was wise to hope for more time to further study this complex subject before an election.

You would be astonished how many of our political leaders do not understand the tremendous benefits of historical Canadian monetary policy.

In my opinion it is going to cost trillions of dollars to do what needs to be done to protect towns like Truro, and Antigonish, Nova Scotia from the consequences of the cracking and sliding of a large part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the land based Greenland Ice Pack into the ocean.

The province of Alberta attempted to create its own provincial currency unit during The Great Depression but enormous pressure was exerted to ensure that their experiment in monetary policy was unsuccessful.

I know that this must sound naive to you Tecoyah......
but I have eighteen years of seeing Messiah Yeshua - Jesus somehow guide my wife to decision after decision after decision.... after decision..... that made no sense to me at the time...... (and on at least two occasions really, really annoyed me)...... .but what Messiah Yeshua - Jesus somehow showed my wife......... sometimes in a dream.....
worked brilliantly every time?!

So..... I am very, extremely open to the idea that Mr. Mark Taylor may be getting a similar type of guidance and yes..... I do believe that the USA dollar will be more strong and stable than ever after the economic and political dust stirred up by Soros and his buddies settles and the smoke clears away.........

The intricacies and dynamics of world financial transactions make any move away from the Dollar a difficult if not impossible move that WILL cause great losses and hardship for anyone deciding to do so. Unless these dynamics change dramatically and massive capital shifts are put in place before the attempt it will fail. World commerce and monetary policy are completely dependent on this stability and any talk of change is bluster at best.
