If Trump can convince enough electors to relect him

Discussion in 'Political Opinions & Beliefs' started by stratego, Nov 27, 2020.

?

What would you think about electors electing Trump?

  1. That would be undemocratic

    21 vote(s)
    70.0%
  2. That is literally their job to pick the President

    9 vote(s)
    30.0%

Not cheating, defending the integrity of the republic: there has been a lot of irregularities in this election, including mail-in balloting, ripe with opportunity for voter fraud, unprecedentedly implemented on a national scale; there has been interference in this election by Big Tech and the mainstream press by, for example, not adequately covering the Hunter Biden laptop scandal--and, in Big Tech's place, blocking coverage of the story--which prevented the American electorate from being fully informed (in fact, about 10% of his voters said they would not have voted for him, had they been sufficiently informed [1]); there is also Biden's refusal to say that he won't expand the seats on the Supreme Court, undermining decades of precedent in an effort to make the judiciary apolitical. Plus, of course, he refused to condemn the domestic terrorist organization of Antifa.

Uh...you said it didn't happen, now you say they were fringe calls, No, it was fairly mainstream. Didn't you read the Kathleen Parker Op-ed I linked?

I support Trump's legal efforts, but I don't support any efforts to try to overthrow the electors. That was your side in 2016. I opposed it then, and I oppose it now.

Here are some more mainstream hysterics against the electoral college in 2016.

Imaginary people's votes don't count. If Trump stole the election the way Biden did it would blasted by the media 24/7 while an epic investigation was mounted.

So, if Trump prevails and Biden's "win" is overturned, will you accept it???

Bee ess. A small minority make occasional secession noises from time to time.

You'd better hope they don't. The rest of the country couldn't afford it. Californians pays in taxes about three times the amount the state receives in federal funding. Their excess goes to red states like Mississippi and Arkansas who receive at least twice as much federal funding as they pay in.

Sounds like more great reason for Californians to secede. I'm all for making each state fiscally self sufficient.

I also notice you avoided the question.

BS. There were no more irregularities this time than any other election ... less, according to Trump's own people at Homeland Security's cyber unit:

    https://www.cisa.gov/news/2020/11/1...ture-government-coordinating-council-election

As for Biden planning to increase the number of Supreme Court justices: that is not up to the president. Only congress can do that.

That's like asking, "What if I jump off this 300 foot bridge and survive?" The obvious response is, "How are you going to do that?"

So, I ask you, how is Trump going to prevail? Dreams are nice, but without a plan, they're just dreams. I don't see any possible legal avenue for Trump. Share your insight, please.

That is why he is trying to commit a coup with legislatures because he can't provide proof. The cult is supporting a coup based on lie after lie after lie

Not the first time in history this has happened

Biden has already been certified in PA. Those electors can't be touched. MI said the same thing. How's the 3rd recount going in GA?

There's nothing Trump can do. It's done.

If the legislatures went rogue and sent an alternate slate - McConnell/Pence will accept that one on January 6th and create a constitutional crisis.. The leaders say they won't but Trump is trying to corrupt them nevertheless

There are 33 states (plus the District of Columbia) that require electors via state law to vote for the winner of the popular vote in their state. Of those states remaining, most require all candidates on their ballot to submit a list of electors to the secretary of state or an office similar to that prior to the election. Then who wins the popular vote in those states, the slate of electors chosen by the candidate who won will cast that states electoral vote.

Faithless electors do occur as there were 3 in 2016 from Clinton's slate of electors. But their vote for another candidate besides Hillary was a protest vote for Trump winning. Trump would need at least 38 faithless electors and all would have to come from those 17 states without laws binding the electors to the candidate winning the popular vote. Trump won 10 of those 17 states leaving only 7 states to get his 38 faithless electors. That is almost an impossibility. Especially considering those electors in the states won by Biden were chosen by Biden and or his campaign.

It is certainly theoretically possible, but at this point realistically unlikely.

He might have had somewhat better luck appealing his case to individual state legislatures (so they could reappoint different electors to vote for him), but even that would be mostly a longshot.
(It's easier to obstruct a legislative decision because there are typically three different branches, then it is to pass a decision that could be divisive and controversial)

Jimmy Carter himself noted the high potential of fraud with mail-in balloting. (1)

And somehow, ironically, with the unprecedented nationwide implementation of mail-in voting, the 2020 election was the most secure? And note how they don't actually make an argument about how it is: they just make some blanket statement and throw it out there.

That is incorrect. Increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court would require the president's signature. So Biden would play a key role.

PA is a done deal. The letter of certification has already been sent to DC and each elector. I'm not sure about MI.

Why do trumpers insist there is massive voter fraud when Trump himself is not claiming that in any court of law?

Powell spewing aburdist conspiracy theories that are EASILY shown to be batcrap crazy, and trump and his supporters eat that crap up as the real reason trump the loser lost.

Okay, it did happen, I concede. I don't remember, however, hearing anything in the MSM about it, and I don't remember Hillary advocating for it. So, I hold the contention that it wasn't a big deal in 2016.

It is, interesting, however, to check out the forum search function:

    http://www.politicalforum.com/index.php?threads/electors-under-siege.488324/

There was this, and another thread. Mostly a RW circle jerk. Doesn't seem like Dem forum members brought up this topic.

Some of the Trump fan posters in this thread are actually still on the forum now. Their reversal of tune is illuminating.

Maybe this time around the violent leftist rioters should carry signs proclaiming, "Rehearsals are over. This time we REALLY mean it!"

Silly question. Biden was elected and the electors will confirm that. Pointless speculation.

Well I suppose you could check to see if any of the posters in that thread have switched positions, but my point still stands. I have not switched positions. Trying to fool with the electors was wrong in 2016 and wrong now. However the current imbroglio involves a constitutional process at least, not death threats against electors as happened in 2016.

Could you provide a link showing proof of widespread voter fraud of imaginary people’s votes? I mean, clearly there must be proof if you’re making that claim, right? Otherwise you’re being dishonest. And you would never be dishonest, right? So, I look forward to your proof.

Which people? If certain elections are deemed invalid by the court and the Republican legislatures chooses the electors or the elector count is considered invalid and barred from the final tally then it would still be constitutional.
