A tax cheat is someone who cheats on their taxes. N ot someone who makes mistakes. I agree we need to simplify the tax code, but that doesn't mean that people don't cheat. The small company my wife worked for was almost closed down a few years back because the head of the company did not file any taxes for seven years and kept the money for his personal use. That is a tax cheat, not an honest mistake.
It is estimated that one trillion dollars each year is lost to people that cheat on their taxes. It would be nice to get some of that money back.

If the IRS recovered half of the trillion dollars a total of 500 billion dollars each year they could buy over 6 billion new F 35 fighter jets or build 20 billion miles of border wall.

    fake news

some groups chose to put tea party in their name, for a tax status that was not for political groups... so of course they were set aside to make sure they were not political

lesson learned, do not use political names for your group if you want faster approval of a tax status not for political groups

Maybe you should tell NPR it’s fake news.

That is of course, the side of the story the politicians tell you. That justifies the need to raise taxes, to expand forced collections, and enable the endless waste of money.

You have to live within your means or go broke, as do I. The same thing is true for business.
Government laughs at the idea- because you and I and the business we own are like a golden goose, or perhaps a cow they can milk and take steak from at the same time.
IF they were fiscally responsible, the budget could be balanced. They limit the national debt for show, then raise the limit over and over. Never ends. If they collect more- they still spend more than they collected, and area always looking for new ways to tax things.

When they want more money (and they always do) they simply add taxes. The new Biden bill imposes a tax on companies who buy their own stock. Most things are taxed over and over- you're taxed when you buy it, taxed because you own it, and the only way you can lose something like your home when it's completely paid for- it to taxes. Most people aren't objecting to paying taxes- they are objecting to not getting their money's worth. Many who you assume are cheating are probably just trying to break even.

Good citizens will pay their own way, but they get tired of being hosed.

They are going after soft targets, middle class and poor that can't afford an attorney and so they will just send in whatever they demand.

Lets not forget that Donald Trump did everything he could to weaponize every single agency under his control against political rivals, people of color, immigrants legal or otherwise, the poor, women, gays, transgender How is it possible for anyone to trust trumpsters, conservatives, or their apologists?

People want more money ( and they always do) 'Good citizens' are cheapskates looking for excuses and justifications to take and not give. They spend their time looking to rationalize every tawdry, dishonest and threadbare trick to hold onto a buck. That same instinct is the foundational principle of capitalism. Those same 'good citizens' don't want to appear to be others as cheapskates who are looking for excuses and justifications, so they latch on to any of a number faux outrage arguments like those above

What you are actually doing here, is validating the exact line of thinking, and the same rationalizations that shoplifters, or grifters, thieves, and bank robbers . Walmart does not need that lipstick. Walmart has millions and millions of dollars it wastes or hoards. Walmart does not treat its employees well. Walmart's CEO is an incompetent amoral overpaid oaf. I deserve that lipstick more than Walmart deserves my money. We use these same justifications when we grab from anyone we see as having more than we do. It could be a wealthy relative, and a friend who loaned us money that we don't want to pay back, or it could be the guy who owns the unlocked 2022 Ferrari with some Christmas presents on the front seat. It could be someone who does not want to part with a couple of thousands or hundreds of taxes.

When there is an economic disparity between to two capitalists, one of which balks at paying the other, conservatives call these arguments 'appeals to class warfare' but when these same arguments are made to avoid paying taxes, you treat them as concerns of 'good citizens'

    The very attitude you see being expressed here;
    6. "What was wrong with the way IRS was handling things before?" In a thread on the IRS losing half a trillion dollars to cheating

You make a foolish argument. Governments never make money; they only take revenue from the people- because they are they ones who generate it. Of course there are people who are frugal; I'm one of them. I want good value for the money I spend- and that is hardly selfish or greedy, it's fiscal responsibility. At the same time, I'm willing to pay well for good value, and that isn't cheap. You have to pay enough to do the job right. However, the old saying "You get what you pay for" is false. As a businessman, I can give you less than your moneys worth and survive indefinitely. If I give you more- I go broke. So you can get less value than what you pay for, but you can't get more.

Government services we pay for are generally an incredibly poor value. The waste is monumental, and the addiction to waste- the spending of the people's money like it was an unlimited credit card- has long been out of control. Taxes for fair value- are fair. Taxes to fund reckless irresponsible spending are not.

The "battle" as you call it is mostly about that fair value. IF you are inefficient, greedy, dishonest, unmotivated or indifferent, you won't be giving fair value for the money you take from others.
And remember- everything you buy, is your choice. You are free to be as frugal or as wasteful as you wish- and so long as you pay your own way and deal with the consequences of your choices, that's your business. Taxes however are not your choice; they are imposed on you by the government with the force of law. You have no control over how wisely or carefully the money is spent, and those spending it suffer no financial consequences for the waste of it. While you have incentive to be prudent and manage well- your government has very little.

There's a standard of law that is universal called Fiduciary Duty. That states that any person or group holding management power over the assets or welfare of others has the duty to always act in the best interests of those people. That includes wise fiscal decisions, prudent management that will best serve the people. This is the duty of all people holding office at all levels- and is universally ignored. Taxes should be an investment in good services that return benefits to the people. Most all people are willing to pay for that.

You sound very much like the person who's perception is that the only reason you aren't wealthy is that someone else is, so they must be cheating you. Widespread delusion, unfortunately.

No. That was never my argument. That is what you thought I said and you argued that was my argument. In other words, you were putting words and thoughts based on your interpretation, and no one else.

Right now, there is about 75000 to 77000 IRS personnel from the IRS Commissioner down to the lowly mail clerk at a submission processing center. About 50% will retire in the next five years. They are also having problems hiring qualified people in a competitive job market. This bill will help replace the employees who are retiring plus hire a net of 20000 additional personnel by the end of 2035. On the other hand, no one likes to pay taxes, not sales tax, not a property tax, not income tax, not even tariffs, but it is necessary if you want to keep all the things you keep for granted. Furthermore, the GOP is using fear tactics on you about the IRS. There are processes in place to make sure that it is nearly impossible for a rogue IRS Revenue Agent or Officer to go after you without cause or intent. I can't go into detail because that would be violating my oath of confidentiality I took over 20 years ago as a government employee. So, if a person is audited it is either a questionable item or items on the return, which you will receive a letter, an audit project that the IRS has selected your situation with your return to update their analysis of that subgroup, or someone snitched on you. No matter which type of audit, the IRS will send you a letter to the address of the record. Read the letter, decide if legal representation, aka Tax Attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent, is best for you, and go from there. It is up to the IRS to determine if you have additional income, but it is up to you to prove your deductions and credits. Don't provide the information when asked, they will generally deny the deductions or credits they were looking at and move on. That is how a basic audit works. Are people nervous when getting the letter? Yes. Are they fearful? Generally no. But being nervous is not the same as being fearful, is it?

Both Democrats and Republicans love to bash government agencies that they don't like. GOP more than Democrats these days. However, all government agencies, through the necessary and proper clause, will be tasked with a mission that Congress sets out for them to do. I do not begrudge federal employees who do the honest thing to the best of their ability no matter what their political viewpoint is. The question best asked is what is the most effective way for that agency to perform its function? Are there regulations that inhibit the effectiveness of that agency or the people/product/industry it is intended to regulate, such as safe products to sell to the public for instance, or fair labor laws? And there are other questions. But simply just cutting the staff because one does not like the agency or one thinks all the employees vote a certain way. That is absolutely insane and childish to think. It is like thinking that you want to eliminate the customer service department in your business because you don't like the person who is running the department and you cannot fire them for the cause. If you did that, your business would suffer eventually, and probably to the point of either bankruptcy or voluntarily shutdown. And that is exactly what is happening with the talk about the IRS every time something happens that they don't like.

Yes, there are too many unscrupulous people, but too many of them are outside government, not inside.

That is BS. for Treasury employees, all Treasury employees, in order to keep their jobs, must follow the tax laws or else be terminated from their position with honest intent. This is section 1203 of the IRS Reform and Restructure Act of 1998 and it is still in effect. Of all the departments that have the worst noncompliance, it is the DoD. As for individuals, it really depends on the type of income and type of return you are filing, ie 1040 series, partnership, corporation, or S corp.

The GOP has become the official party of the insurrectionists.

It's time to start treating them that way.

Laughable. If you have politized arm of the government (now armed) that can financially destroy their political enemies, they will. I won't bother listing all of the examples and will point you instead to google or a history book. I certainly am not afraid of an audit UNLESS it is done by people actively interested in destroying my life based on my political beliefs. People with my level of income and lower lack the resources to fight an unfair audit in court.

If you need evidence of the politicized nature of the IRS, you need only look at what states and counties they are auditing. Overwhelmingly Red states and Red counties in blue states. This is what federal corruption looks like and it is getting much worse every day.

It's not where the audit is occurring that is important, it's what is being audited that is important. Notice the Rio Grande Valley as a high area. Wanna make a bet it is fake Sch C income, ETIC. additional child tax credit, improper farm/ranch deductions, underreporting of income, and other things.

https://projects.propublica.org/gra...ive counties with the, such as in South Dakota.

So it's your claim that if you're a registered Democrat, you won't get audited.

    Interesting.

    So defund law enforcement?
That's a valid solution huh. I heard they were taxing thieves...seems like a good way to catch em and with enough agents they can monitor social media and all those youtube videos where they are caught in the act. Al Capone ring a bell?

Its not like local police are of any good. Ask anyone who's had their catalytic converter stolen.

Who said anything about de-funding police? Not me. That's lefty crap.
What I want is an honest government that does the job it asked for and is paid to do- with honor.
