I'm not affirming that it is or denying that it isn't, I'm just wondering what people here think. Please also give examples of why it is/isn't.

Republican part is not a single party, but rather a coalition of different interest groups. Often times it seems to be the rich big business owners running the show, unfortunately.
Though in recent years, the Democratic Party seems to be the one sponsoring crony legislation (under the guise of energy, environmental, health policies) to repay their corporate donors.
You see, they got desperate for a victory and sold out to corporate donors.

both the democratic and the republican parties are controlled by the rich. both are utterly corrupt and concerned mainly with the accumulation of power, creating and sustaining a ruling class. just as the democrats only use the rhetoric of class struggle, social welfare and wealth redistribution to attain position, the republicans merely pay lip service to the conservative values of self-reliance, individual achievement and adherence to the tenets set out in the constitution. the only real difference between the two is the rate at which they will eventually swamp us all in governmental interference. the republicans seem to favor a slow and steady course toward a nation of authoritarian rule, while the democrats would have us rush headlong into debt and chains.

We may disagree on politics, but here we pretty much agree on analysis.

And to the op: no. You'd have to be a partisan or a partisans fool to think the GOP is the rich man's party. The democrats haven't been consistently outstanding the GOP because of $5 donations from little guys.

The rich have a lot of influence in both of the major political parties. The GOP just has that sterotype because of their opposition to the welfare system the Democrats want.

TheDoubter:

I wouldn't say the GOP is the party of the rich so much as they are the major party more prejudiced against the poor. It is very common for me to hear from Republicans that poor folk are generally in their situation because of bad personal decisions and, or at least so they seem to imply, have behaved in such a way to deserve poverty. Though plenty of the people I know in that party support welfare benefits, they seem more concerned than the typical bloke in the Democratic Party about making sure the benefits allotted are minimal - concerned that the people receiving benefits are very often irresponsible and/or manipulative, long-term wards of the state who have little if any interest in finding work or otherwise investing in their own development so as to empower them to be self-sufficient.

In contrast, I see rather little in the way of objections from the nativist or national conservative Republicans in particular for having some sort of relatively generous welfare scheme for people from the working class upward from there in forms such as protectionism, tightened immigration policies, certain tax benefits, and incentives for economic behaviors they consider responsible or satisfactorily nationalistic. The classical liberal leaning sorts of Republicans, for their respective parts, are in favor of an economic system that arguably benefits everyone in society but the wealthiest folk most of all - which perhaps contributes significantly to the reputation the party has on this matter.

The Democratic Party meanwhile is not that for the poor, rather the major party that is more prejudiced against the rich, even though the policies many of their factions call for are quite similar to those put forward by their counterparts in the GOP. They differ more in how they frame issues, regard certain social groups, and appeal to them than they do on what kind of political economic system ought to be in place. Only the Dems' left wing of social democratic "progressives" are really anywhere remotely close to exploring the possibility of a moderately balanced third way betwixt capitalism and socialism instead of staunchly siding with the former, in spite of their rhetoric.

The Republican Party is the party of the white working class for cultural reasons.

Well said. My father is very conservative and has said things implying that individuals who are poor or on welfare have brought these things on themselves. While I'm sure there must be some people who milk the system, he has never provided any examples.

The Democrats is the party of the new money, High tech, nouveau riche, hitting it big in hollywood, people who made big money are Democrats. They don't care about taxes, because they make so much money.

The GOP is the party of inherited money, people who were born on third base. They fear having it taxed away, because they have no clue how to make more.

Yep, simple solutions for simple minds usually don't add up.

I think you're right to some extent, but lots of white working class folks identify culturally with the Old America. Imo there is no place in the Democratic Party for white working people any more.

Maybe we're both right. Sometimes the line between culture and religion can be a fine one.

The white working class is ending up in the Republican Party because it has no where else to go.

The rich white class, is more accurate. The GOP has always been all about the rich, all about the corporation, and all about the well to do. They won't even deny it. Is the Republican party the party of the rich??? Well......DUH!!!!!!!!

You want to know what's really funny, look up the tally for the votes for the top racial equality bills. They are overwhelmingly in favor of conservatives. I'm talking about the major ones fifty years ago, it'll blow your mind.

No, demographics of the Republican Party are about as close to an ideal diffusion as possible. The democrats in the other hand have a huge wealth gap between the limousine liberals and the poor they pander too, whose lives have not improved in their districts.

There are a lot of good Republicans, but they don't make headlines. Only the crazies get the spotlight.

Dick Cheney made some money peddling influence, Trump inherited a real estate empire, and Kerry, he married money.
I'm sure you think you have a point, but think about Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet, George Clooney, Barbra Steisand, Oprah Winfrey, these are people who made hundreds of millions, billions, they are the most successful people in the country, and Democrats.
Cheney weaseled some money out of Halliburton by steering government contracts their way.

More typical GOP money is like Richard Scaife Mellon or the Koch Brothers, inherited money or money made in old industries.
And most Republicans don't have that kind of money, they are voting based on fear and prejudice, but 700 people who fund the GOP, like the Walton Family, are not the people who actually made the money.

Well, they worship the rich. They worship greed and they reward greed. They avoid regulation as much as possible because they don't want to appear hostile towards rich people that want to make more money. They want to kill taxes for rich people and seem to worry much more about the 1% than about any other group.

Sure, the democrats cater to rich people at times as well, but not nearly as much as republicans. And the actual voters of the party are a lot less pro-rich than the politicians that are bought by the rich. On the republican side, it's pretty much the party to benefit the rich from bottom to top. You get poor white trash that are sometimes republicans and yet, they still worship the 1%, like they're best buds or something.
