I do not think that women today need a leg up, via affirmative action, to make up for college admissions procedures from 50 years ago. And I say that as a woman ---- a successful, business owning, independent (and Independent ) woman.

Used to be you could call a white person 'racist' and they would usually get all hurt and offended. Overuse of the word killed that. Now there is truly nothing to call white people that will reliably hurt them.

 

Who's more likely to be stopped and searched by police without cause? Who's more likely to be shot and killed because they were wearing a hoodie? Who's more likely to be shot in their grandmother's backyard because they were on their cell phone? Who's more likely to have their credit score checked before renting an apartment? Do people that are walking towards you on the sidewalk cross the street as you approach? Does the salesperson in a department store follow you around at a distance? Has anyone called you a 'thug' or a 'terrorist'? Has anyone ever remarked on how articulate you are?

If you're white and thinking, "No, this can't apply to me," those are signs that you're experiencing white privilege in your day-to-day life, often without being aware of it in the slightest. The main point of white privilege is that you aren't constantly aware of being white, and any requirements and restrictions that causes. You're given the privilege of simply being a person, and being defined in society by other things such as womanhood, sexuality, taste, economic status. Be aware of your privilege, and check it.

 

I’m constantly aware of being white. I’m outside 360 days a year. I’m really white except for when I’m sunburned red. I have to wear hats I don’t like. Clothes I don’t like. I can’t take an Advil or anything for a headache or injury because it makes me even more photosensitive. I’ll probably die early of skin cancer. Being white sucks. I’m not belittling other people’s problems, just pointing out there are two columns in every individual’s life. The advantage column and the disadvantage column. Yeh race can be a factor, but it doesn’t have to be the defining factor.
