I don't have a problem with the various world religions being taught in school as an elective, just so long as it is taught from an academic position. Which would include fair critiques of all religions if someone wanted to do that within the class.

Should we not know something about such an important thing in human history, religion, and how they varied, etc?

So, keep such a study in the realm of an academic study, to inform us and never to convert.

I heard an interesting fact just this morning. Did you know that the Congregational church, the way it was organized used an idea that made it into our own philosophy and founding documents? Well, it seems this idea of the consent of the governed, and voting, was a key part of the congregational church that preceded our own founding, and was an idea, embraced by christians, that was also embraced by our founders later. The Mayflower Compact was also mentioned in this.

I had never heard of this being adopted by the Congregational church, and set them apart from other Prot. denominations, long before our own revolution and founding. But I can see how those people who believe religion, christianity is a pox, and had nothing to do with out founding as a nation would find this very inconvenient to acknowledge. Right? For obvious reasons.

So what form of gov't did islam have a role in creating? Of course we know that ancient greek philosophy also had a role in the way our founders thought, and it is just too bad that our current politicians are not as well educated as many of our own founders were. Which would of course explain the mess our politicians have made of the US. I am not sure one could even call our leaders well educated, in the sense that was recognized in the time of our founding and founders. We are far too specialized today, and as Heinlein once wrote, specialization is for insects, not human beings. ha ha.

Yes, teaching about religion in a world religion class is certainly strange, isn't it? What I don't understand is why they are teaching calligraphy in a world religion class.

Both the articles linked make incorrect or misleading statements.

First, you can teach a religion, or you can teach about a religion. Gaining knowledge and understanding of a religion is not the same as becoming a follower. The first link is alleged to have been written by an anonymous retired teacher. The writer complains that more time is spent on Islam than the religious philosophies of other major religions. Those comments may be misleading.

Starting with no differentiation between Social Studies and History, the writer continues to obfuscate by not including the specific course or grade level so readers can see for themselves what is being taught (required by critical thinking). Another thing not included, and probably the most important one, is the goals and objectives for the unit and lessons. These are a must-have before we can pass judgement on Florida's curriculum.

If history is to be taught properly, it must include factors that cause events. Islam has played a major role in the history of the world, and it's very important to differentiate between what was a result of the religion itself and what was the result of people who just happened to be Muslim. To not know that is to be ignorant and to lack critical thinking skills. That leaves us vulnerable to the simplistic and uninformed opinions of media pundits who tell us how to think.

We can actually see this by clicking the link in the first article. A WV parent complained about an assignment in which his daughter was asked to write in Arabic. The writer goes on to say that the teaching of Christianity and Judaism was limited to historical events, exactly as it should be.

The second article starts out with the false statement that "...Christian religion cannot be present in any way in the public school system." Learning about a religion is not prohibited in public schools, as we see in the WV example. Forcing things like opening prayers, official religious symbolism, etc. is prohibited as per the Constitution.

Are you talking about christianity? Because christians did the same things.

Did you know that before the 14th Amendment was enacted, churches in many States had taxation districts?

You paid a tax to the church whether you wanted to or not, and if you didn't pay the tax, you didn't go to State criminal or civil court, you went to an ecclesiastical court, which had the power to seize your assets or imprison you.

No, I dont suppose they could...theyd be murdered wouldnt they...but then again many muslims, who just say they are muslims because they have to, get on the piss, listen to music, dress inappropriately, etc etc..
They are in fact claytons muslims, because as I said, if they left islam totally, and told anyone, they would be murdered....what other faith has this stipulation...the war manual of mo which states apostacy will cause the death of the apostate is quite specific....... the war manual is quite cunning in this area...its just a penalty for desertion from mo's army of yesteryear....

'Opinion' articles written by an anonymous source is not something I would pay any attention to.

I think kids should be taught about all the worlds major religions. Not dogmatically, but from a historic, cultural and shared value perspective.

But I also get how some people are afraid of contamination of their communities by the religious beliefs of others. It manifests in hysterical "sharia is coming" hair on fire nonsense from the more vocal bigots amid the poor, oppressed, white, sorta christians of america.

The trick in countering the anti-white propaganda our children have to listen to is getting them to NOT talk about it in the classroom lest s/he get expelled from school or called a racist and hater. They pretty much have our kids right where they want them. Unless you home school there's no way around the hate propaganda.
I went back to school and was almost 'expelled' from college because I 'countered' the propaganda. School councilor said I was a danger to the other students. hahaha. I dropped out. Waste of ten grand.

No, I'm saying that if Islam was being taught in school, I think it would make mainstream media stand up and take notice, don't you think so?

Ask Mr. Google to give us a link by a person with a name.

Almost 20 years ago when I was in high school we had an elective class for world religions. That class also covered Islam.

Because schooling has a leftist lean and they want to indoctrinate to "embrace" Islam.

Oh I'm sure you would love to ban the word bigot . However it describes the position held by many people and is therefore a useful descriptor and here to stay.
