i of course dont support racial/ethnic discrimination in housing but folks should be aware that under federal law it is legal in the USA under certain circumstances. but you cannot advertise any racial/ethnic preferences.

The above is true. I discovered this myself when I was looking for property in Mississippi. Many people don't use realtors or online realty services when renting or selling. I asked my realtor why there were so many "for sale by owner" signs and she explained it to me.

 

years ago I saw an ad in a paper looking for tenants for a home in Woodlawn, Bronx.

its an Irish enclave. Ad said "irish only".

that was illegal.

but, if owner lives in the house, and they met the applicant, they can refuse to rent unless applicant is Irish.

Feds decided that just as you have the right to decide who is welcome in your home, you also have the right to decide who rents in your personal building.
