According to Richard M. Nixon, Henry Kissinger and the Thailand government the Vietnam War had successfully blocked the spread of communism to Thailand.

According to DARPA and those who were involved in developing the internet, if America hadn't been involved in the Vietnam War there would be no internet today.

If there was never a Vietnam War, American soldiers and Marines would be carrying a real rifle like the M-14 that could reach out and kill the enemy beyond 500 meters but the AR-15 would still be on the sporting goods store shelves being sold as a hunting rifle.

I thought ALL wars are "obscene"
But, speaking for the recent ones, I found something noble in fighting
Fascism, Islamism and Communism. All three seek to harm my life,
welfare and liberty. Without America I suppose most of us would be
living under one or the other.

ps what did we accomplish? The argument is that we slowed down the
advance of Communism into Asia. With Mao's China and the Soviet
union themselves embroiled in their proxy war, it gave time for the
developing nations of SE Asia to overhaul their economies and defenses.
This includes The Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and maybe Indonesia.

    What did the Communists gain?
They gained South Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. It took about eight
million lives to get these three countries. Nth Viet's General Giap boasted
that soon Communism would "set fire" to all of Asia. Uncle Mao boasted
    the same.

Are you a Communist? You sound like one.

It's relevant in that it shows how to fight Western powers.

So we should have had thousands more continue the war so communism would not spread to Thailand? I was in Vietnam recently and it’s thriving city.
Are you an extremist because you sure sound like one.

To the Marxist Left ALL other political persuasions are "right wing"
No I am a moderate. I vote both for center left and center right.
I fear for a society where Fascists fight in the street and Marxists
take control of our universities and media.

    As for a "thriving city"
A friend of mine spent ten years in a "re-education" center, learning
about the evils of Capitalism. He was one of the lucky one - he didn't
get a bullet in his head. When he got out there was a STOCK EXCHANGE
    IN HANOI.
Thriving yes, like China is thriving. But where are things the Communists
promised you (sorry, Nationalists...) ie freedom from Capitalism, equality
    and free and open elections.

You are a moderate like I am a right winger. Why would youre friend append 10 years in a reeducation center in Vietnam?

I wonder what the Capitol police will do next? Will they be ready when Jane Fonda comes and does what she did the previous Friday and they arrest her and lock her up and set a trial date for her offenses?
Police may be ready for the repeat performance and be ready for anything. We'll have to wait and see won't we?

I don't blame you. She'll get arrested again. The question is: is there a chance that she could be prosecuted? That remains to be seen.

No, seriously, I am a moderate. In Australia I have
voted for the conservative Liberal Party and the Trade
    Union Labor Party.

The Soviet Union/Russia have been in Syria going back to the 1970's of the Cold War.
The Soviet/Russia navy has had an advance naval base in Tartus, Syria since 1971.

It was President Obama who wanted regrime #3 in the Muslim world and Assad was his third target.

(After Assad...Obama's regime change #4 was likely to be in Jordan.)

It was Obama who armed Al-Qaeda and his "JV Team" ISIS who were suppose to take down Assad.

Assad is still in power. Another failed Obama regime change.

What did we get out of regime change #3 ?

Well Putin showed his cards and we learned that Russia was twenty years ahead of the U.S. military when it comes to electronic warfare.

We also learned how the Russian navy would use their anti ship missiles against the U.S. Navy or other navies in the world.

But Russia and the Chi-Coms learned a lot more from America's recent wars about our weapons platforms and how American troops fight today from the First Gulf War (Desert Storm) Afghanistan and the second gulf war in Iraq along with observing Obama's regime change #2 in Libya and the failed regime chang #3 in Syria.

I think Putin was very amused when France ran out of bombs during Obama's regime change #2 in Libya.
NATO isn't some bad ass as Europe wants Russia to believe. Without the USA, NATO would run out of bombs.
NATO can't fight without the USA.

I've already said in other threads that Trump may have made a mistake but I also know Trump is just keeping a campaign promise of no more stupid war and bringing our troops home.

What other Presidents in the past made campaign promises of not going to war ?
    President Woodward Wilson.
    President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Hopefully American troops will be leaving the Middle East.

Why can't America wage war in some really nice place instead of it always being in some shithole country that has burning hot dry deserts or muddy wet humid jungles or below zero snow packed mountains ?

I agree. We should invade the South Of France and the Isle Of Capri without the heavy Nazi resistance we had to face in WW II. Our guys deserve a break.

Even Germany and Russia created a place to fight each other at, Poland.

Isn't that the purpose of Poland ?

they never should have been in the middle east, the only reason they are there is cause of Bush

we grabbed the tiger by the tail and now no one can let lose without it getting ugly

we spent over 7 trillion on Afghanistan and Iraq (plus much of our soldiers lives and well being)... was it worth it? a quick Arial attack would have been so much better

and where did that money go, doesn't seem like it went into our economy that is for sure - so much manufacturing is done overseas now, most of the money seems to go overseas

I'm old schooled and kinda of a punitive action type of guy..."Crush and Bolt."

Go in, break some things, break a couple of limbs, bloody a nose and one good kick in the balls and bolt (leave) while leaving a message...**** with America again we'll come back again and break all of your limbs, break your nose and ram our boot deeply into your ass and bolt again.

You know that was America's policy from 1800 to 1941.
    Punitive action small wars.
U.S. Marines did it over 100 times between 1800 to 1933.

He just sent 2000 troops to Saudi Arabia so who knows what’s going to happen ...isn’t it kind of stupid to make a campaign promise of not going to war when you don’t know what could happen? What if we are attacked? There is something that is really interesting that you said. You’re saying that Trump made a mistake but at least he kept the campaign promise. See something wrong with that?

Unlike past Presidents, Trump has either delivered on his campaign promises or has attempted to deliver on his campaign promises while the "resistance" keeps up with the obstructionism, sedition and witch hunts.

not true, but you can believe Mexico is paying for the wall if it makes you feel better or that "everyone will be covered" under Trump's healthcare plan
